    For me those runs by the front ensemble (Marimbas especially) are the most emotional moment for me in the whole show. So when they turn and the horns are playing that gorgeous slow part and the marimbas then do this amazing run, i guess it is the contrast for me that is so powerful, somehow the front is capturing the pulse and energy of this whole movement (maybe even show) for me, and it catches me emotionally everytime.  I ahve been lucky enough to see there show live 9 times this season and see numerous rehearsals and i would agree that the electronics at this point have not been consistent; sometimes the front overpowers the horn other times there has been no amplification, but each time it still is a powerful moment for me.  But i certainly understand everyone reacts differently to all these moments in what they want, wish or hope for.  Anyway it will be interesting to see how this all continues to evolve, but i am guessing they will keep the ballad to the back --though i am glad for the change in the soloist approach in placement and instrument.

    I'm glad you enjoy it, I cringe every time I hear it. For me it's not true to what I love about the original piece (it's slowness, it's raw melancholy feel) Those feelings for me, evaporate when something fast and unnuanced is introduced (the pit runs). . So that's where I'm coming from. 

    I am glad that you can experience a visceral moment with those runs in there, but I can't :-(

    I'm not sold....I might be if the mic'd pit didn't play non-sense over the winds when they turn back field. There's a balance issue once the turn happens. The video posted has NO pit. ..so all you hear is the winds, which for this particular ballad is what SHOULD be heard, not a bunch of runs by the front ensemble that is not needed and not true to the original piece.

    I never said it wasn't effective, in fact if you go back and read what I wrote...I said the opposite.

    For comparison, it'd be like a designer or director deciding to use an electronic drum kit instead of marching a battery.. .which I'm sure would tick off quite a few percussion oriented enthusiasts/musicians. It's about design choices and what works for your program. I personally hate "Faux Guards" for a myriad of reasons, but I never said they weren't effective.

    If you want to see a program that marched a massive guard with legit color guard work, watch Carmel from last fall. They achieved the same 'effect' as a faux guard but with actual color guard work (while building a skill set for those beginner students).

    Go back and watch a Broken Arrow, LD Bell (from when he was there) or William Mason show....the girls are broken up into usually 3 groups and do the same work over and over. Let's say it's 48 or 64 counts of the same work just repeated. Sometimes girls are turned backfield or alternated forward/backward to give the illusion of new work, sometimes it's done in repetition for the same illusion; But if you watch closely, you'll notice it repeats throughout their shows. When they aren't doing these same counts over and over they act as humans props or spin around in long flow-y (is that a word?) dresses. Hence what a lot of people in the guard world term: Faux Guards....not really 'teaching' color guard, just the same counts over and over again. It's brilliant for what he's trying to accomplish with effect for those high school programs, but it's truly smoke and mirrors when it comes to actual skill.

I mean really, go to 6:15 and just listen - The crazy nonsense starts in the pit and the beauty is absolutely lost. ..it's all design choices though and can be easily fixed, I hope they do it to (and soon). 

  6. Just watched The Bluecoats brass play 'Grow Till Tall' in an arc facing forwards....and this is exactly how it needs to be programmed in the show. No crazy pit runs, no backfield playing or crazy 'body' Just the simplistic beauty of the piece, which almost brought me to tears. Take note designers. ..sometimes less is more.

  7. I think BK is going to connect 2014, 2015 and 2016 in some way during their closer. Perhaps a medley of each year's closer? In any case, as has been said...what we see in Indy Weekend is going to be much different that what we've seen to date.

    I have to admit, I’m pretty captivated by what the Blue Knights are doing. Intentional or not, it does feel like this show is tied somehow to the 2014 and 2015 shows and that makes the intrigue about what’s going on in the 2016 show even more fascinating. It almost feels like it’s coming full circle. In 2014 we are introduced to a character who is describing their last moments and memories, in 2015 we explore those memories and in the 2016 show, BK illustrates the catalyst for those last moments, presented in reverse order.. . It’s brilliant.

  8. I have to throw some love to Klein Collins HS who just won SA in Texas. I LOVE that show!!! It's refreshing, breaks the 'formula' of starting each show with a minute of movement, evokes a nice change in color palette, and utilizes music that is newfangled, energizing, and pleasing to the hear. Not to mention the kids are crazy talented and clearly supported by a creative and forward-thinking staff. Being in the Midwest, I had never heard of them before, but they are on my radar now! I REALLY wish they were going to Dayton, but you can see them here:

    OMG...SO True!!!!! Musical selections are pretty bad across the board this year.

    Watch Carmel and Lawrence Central, you won't regret it!
