  1. Maybe a rumor (uniforms) but Marc Sylvester works well with Cadets. He and GH will scream at each other but his eye is good and he'll make sure they're clean. He and Z hated filth on the field. "Are you f$&@8!! kidding me?"....

  2. I agree that the guard still is dirty in moments. However, what those kids are being asked to do compared to what the Coats guard is being asked to do both choreographically as well as design wise is far more demanding. Not taking anything away from Coats guard, however, their book doesn't have nearly the meat that the Cadets guard book has nor do the Coats guard perform like the Cadets guard. That is where you will see the difference. The Cadets guard will get cleaner everyday. The Coats will eventually plateau, IMO.[/quote

I couldn't disagree with this sentiment more. Bluecoats written guard book is so much more creative and interesting and musical compared to Cadets right now. Cadets seem to spin for spinning sake and interpret every hit point with a toss. I would imagine that Coats are beating Cadets in guard by some margin right now and will continue to do so. Cadets are getting better but I'm not sure have the book or talent (in the guard) to compete with the other top 4 guards this year.

If you think that the Cadets hit every hit point with a toss, I'm curious what you think about Crown's guard? They toss far more than any other guard out there. As a guard person, I realize the challenges the Cadets guard have been given choreographically. They are doing much more intricate choreography than the Bluecoats which is why is the main reason they are dirtier.

  3. Not a lot of effect, if any, from the corps? I wonder if the actual effect judges are saying that. A pretty strong statement.

What I am saying is......take the guard out of the show, what visually do you remember from the corps? Yes, they play well but what visually do you remember them doing??

  4. Hmm, dunno Jim Woods will add some meat as the season goes on. It really is a question for the judges of are you rewarding rhyhmtic moments or more of a whole concept and story. I see Bloos show as a series of Rhythmic moments, and that has been rewarded the past few seasons by the Judges, so we will see.

You are right. I am sure that more will be added. However, not sure I agree about rhythmic moments being rewarded. Crown guard is really not rhythmic moments. They are pure, well choreographed, well executed colorguard. Now, BD guard is a mixture of both IMO but I do not necessarily think that rhythmic movements alone are being rewarded. I think it will truly boil down to who creates the effects.

  5. George I watched the run tonight on DCI Live. The guard has some nice moments. But they are still so dirty. And there seem to be some moments where they are probably changing some of the work. I hope they continue to improve. Compared to Coats they have a long way to go.

  6. "there is a guard uniform "change" where they have a base layer of tan unis that represent the "human condition"

So the guard has a new tan uniform that reveals...an off white/grey uniform?

No. They are shedding the marble costume for the nude "human" unitard.

  7. like I thought... you don't know details. No one is "attacking you" - it's just irresponsible to post stuff on the internet supposing or alluding to the worst. Just calling you out for that - that's all

and as everyone knows - there's always 2 (or sometimes 3) versions of any story, one person's reality of how something "went down" is different than the others... So I would just assume what you have heard (or are supposing) is not the complete picture of the situation

I've heard 3 different "viewpoints" - and I don't begin to suppose I know the "whole truth"

Having managed people and organizations for decades, that's the way things work when managing teams...

Anyway - I apologize if you feel "attacked" - surely not my intention. Just pointing out that "alluding" to "people being treated" poorly isn't really the complete picture of what happened.

I'm honestly not sure even the members know exactly what happened with the chef. I asked my daughter today and she wasn't sure. I'm sure eventually we will get the true story. I think the point is that by putting it out there that "people being treated poorly" puts a black cloud on the Cadets as a whole, especially without an explanation or facts to back it up. That's what I took from it.

Guard improving. They took out one part of the brass running up to the stage and rewrote drill. Cleaning to be done and some additions to story line. I like the direction of this guard in 2 weeks a lot. Need to clean impact points (clean=effect). Definitely looking forward to uni changes on guard and new bold silks. Too washed out now.

Brass improving, percussion great but wish they were pulled up front more for feature.[/quot

I believe flags are coming. Not sure when. That will be a nice addition. Guard definitely much better! Considering the injuries and the people who have left and they've had to fill spots, I think they are doing great work! Like the changes in Wine Dark. Better!!! Keep pushing Cadets!!

  9. FYI, although the drill changes should be in tomorrow night, I think I read that the guard costume additions/changes won't be in until Friday night.

My daughter said the 1 change MAY be in for tomorrow but the 2nd one isn't ready yet. I'm hoping it's in for tomorrow. It will definitely help.......

  10. Dang, i literally signed onto this forum tonight to say: go Cadets guard!!!

They look great - they look more confident in late June this year than they did last season until finals week. No hesitation in their performance at all. The book is difficult (but creatively so, not just showing off - some really neat, gnarly flag phrases this year) and the characterizations are extremely playful, which you wouldn't be able to see if they weren't so confident already. I dig it. I wonder if the awkwardness people are sensing has more to do with all the characterization, actually, which feels a little atypical for the Cadets, but looks good. I'm not worried about technique at all; already in better shape, this point in the season, than the last few years.

Excited to see them rebuild. I think Bloo and SCV should watch out. Per usual, I wish Bloo took more risks in their writing and I wish SCV matched their indoor guard's elegance (and cleanliness.)

Could not agree more with this. Honestly, I am a firm believe that Cadets guard will be higher than you think when all is said and done. And Bloo's guard is good but are getting hyped way more than they should right now. Cadets writing is better and by August, they will be performing it better. There is still changes coming in the Cadets guard and as they continue to produce, they will truly be a great guard.

  11. Definitely not saying they aren't beneficial, just think there are 4 other REALLY good guards.

Agreed but just because they spin well right now and may be cleaner than the CBCCG right now does not mean that they will enhance the show or create as much effect as the CBCCG will at the end. It's not just about clean twirls.....

  12. Tuesday - Pittsburgh

    Thursday - Allentown

    Friday - Clifton

I believe the guard costume changes (at least some portion of them) are due to make their appearance tomorrow or Thursday.

They will not be in for tomorrow. Was at rehearsal tonight. They have made a great change in Wine Dark but will be doing original show tomorrow. Hoping to have the change in for Thursday.

  13. I'll tell you what doesn't make sense to me. I watched a recording of Bluecoats' show this morning before I went to work, and I give them a lot of credit for what they're doing. But it is essentially a WGI show. I don't want my comment to sound negative, but that's really what I see in it. If that show wins, I'll be just as excited for them as I was when Crown won their first ring, but there will be no line between what is drum corps and what is WGI (in my opinion, of course).

I agree with you on this. My other thought after watching last night was that if you took Crown's guard (who is amazing btw) out of the show, or even toned them down, what visually do you remember about the corps? I truly enjoyed crown but after watching them, I left thinking "man that was like a guard show with a corp addition". Don't get me wrong, they were great but man is the bulk of the effect created from the guard alone. And the corps spends the majority of the time in the front half of the field. I'm sure that as the summer goes on that will change but I feel Crown was like a WGI show as well. Maybe it's a sign of the times.........

  14. Thank God you are not a judge. For someone who says they've been around this activity since 1982 you sound like a 17 year old kid because someone has disagreed with your opinion. Here is my opinion no one here at Cadet-land (and I did say here) especially the kids in the 2016 Cadets care one bit about all this crap you people are slinging. We're talking Cadets here and even on a really bad day I don't see this corps finishing lower than 4th. I too have been around this activity long enough to know that the product that the Cadets have put on the field this year will hold up against what I have seen from Crown and BD. It's just a matter of days now folks then you all can put those #### shovels away.

A FREAKING MEN!!!! People are entitled to their opinions without a doubt, but I really think we forget that those hard working kids are also reading these comments. It's OK to say that you are not a fan of their design or the theme or whatever, but why in God's name would you be throwing things out there like they will not be in the top five, this show is terrible etc? Henry7184, I'm not sure what your background is other than you have marched and been around a long time but my question to you would be have you ever taught or judged? Because I have and I am here to tell you that what YOU (or anyone) think is not good design (on June 20) does not mean it is in fact bad design or that the judging community will not like it. As I stated before, I teach a World class guard finalist program and I will tell you that I have had groups that have gone from really, really bad (in January) to make world class finals in the same season. You take the input you are given and you incorporate the changes that you feel are warranted. You showcase your talents and you pick your moments. For you to prejudge that the Cadets will in fact NOT make the top five because of what you saw on June 20 is really kinda crazy. The beauty to drum corps is that they get to practice everyday - 12 hours a day. The amount of changing and evolving that will happen with this show will be tremendous and quite frankly AWESOME to see. It saddens me that people like you come on here and are so blunt and honestly rude in your comments. Please, feel free to state your opinion and say you don't like it, that's fine. But out of courtesy to the 2016 Cadets, please be kinder in your approach to your comments. The Cadets history and accolades speak for themselves.

  15. Kinda feels good to hear a guard person chime in here.

Thanks. I've tried to keep quiet because I wanted to see how it looked in uniform and with show flags and I do believe that people are entitled to an opinion. I was getting frustrated with some of the comments on the guard but tried to take them in stride. I teach a world class guard so I do have some knowledge (lol). I get why everyone is hesitant with the guard, I do. My daughter was in that show and I loved it but I knew. The kids were great but the design not so much. But this year it's different. My daughter tells me all the time it's "special" and the kids are loving performing it!! You have to try to look past the dirt and look at the intent. Will it be effective? Will is generate moments WHEN it's clean? That is what matters. The dirty will disappear day by day. The key, IMO, to this show is going to be the characterization and performance of the members, especially the guard. They will need to bring it to life, and I have absolutely no doubt they will. Kristy is BRILLIANT when it comes to that. Believe me, I have competed against her for years.......

  16. I feel like someone said, "Look, if you guys want to win, you have to have a story in your show," so they just kind of dashed one together for the purpose of having a story.

The corps is great (verdict still out on the guard - yikes!), but I just feel like as usual they are a few years behind the state of the art. This show would have been "it" in 2010 or so.

I am very curious as to why you say yikes to the guard?? So they are dirty right now. It's June! And won't it be fun to watch them grow over the next month (which by the way, that staff WILL WITHOUT A DOUBT get them clean). But tonight they were also battling the elements. I just finished watching the video and honestly think that although it's dirty, it is far more accessible and way better designed than it has been in years. Last year's guard was very good but not designed well. I will take dirt in June over bad design any day!! And if you are knowledgeable with Kristy's programs and and have watched them, you know precisely what the Cadets guard will look like by the end. Her resume speaks for itself!

  17. We will be there rain or shine tonight. Our daughter is a 2 year vet of the guard and is loving this show. She continually tells us it something special. I cannot wait to see it live again. We were there last week and thought it was great. Based off the videos, it is going to awesome to see tonight.

  18. Yeah, today's email said it will cost you a $120 donation by this Saturday to get one of those.

I gave that much back on May 26 - I hope I get one for that!

But you should get if free with a kid marching.

My kid just texted she wanted one today and she is also marching. We joined the M&G club last week. I certainly agree with you and hope she can get one.
