  1. You wanted to see an uproar. You should have been there for the first final retreat that the Scouts sang "You'll Never Walk Alone" instead of playing it.

"BLASPHEMY!!!!!! Voice does NOT belong in drum corps, even if it is just final retreat."

That excitement eventually calmed too. Final retreat/encores/non-competitive performances have always been about letting the members have some fun. Only since the advent of DCP have these become "the end of the world". I've seen almost 89 years of changes. Believe me, we will all survive  .

  2. Sorry if everyone thought I was a little too cranky when I posted. I was. At this age, good days are far outnumbered by the not-so-good ones.

My only point in the initial post was that people need to be a little more explanatory in their posts about new corps if they want to be taken fully serious by today's potential members. A simple link to the corps' website and an explanation of all that they have already achieved would have been very helpful.

  3. THIS IS NOT MEANT TO BE A PERSONAL ATTACK:

    But,

    1. For how long have you been raising funds for this new DCI-bound corps? What kind of permanent funding sources do you have up and running? Have you raised at least $100K toward equipment, facilities, etc.?

    2. Who are these staff members with all of this experience? What currently-active DCI corps have they taught/written for? What other educational experience do they bring to the table?

    3. Who is on the Board of Directors? What is their current drum corps management experience? Who is the Corps Director, Business Manager, Tour Manager, Publicity Director, Fundraising Director?

    etc., etc.

Sorry, but there have been too many "announcements" on DCP the last few years about new OC corps that have been disappointments at best. Remember Magic of Mobile, Hypnotix, Salina Silver Sabres, the new OK corps, etc., etc.?

Watch, it's going to happen. If not, I'll owe everyone a cookie...you have my word!

I'll take one of those giant birthday cookies, please  . Particularly since Cap Regiment is doing Open Class.......and no Blue Stars in finals??

  5. Top Five:

    Teal

    SCV-Cadets

    Citations

Capital Regiment - Welcome back Ric/Team

    Next five no order:

    Legengs

    Revolution

    Dutch Boy

    Impulse

    VK

    Out all together:

Memphis/Texas group will struggle. No pics, no update on numbers, major move to Texas with many others already doing camps in this state. It's a big state but please.

No Music City? Their stuff has seemed pretty impressive, IMHO.

Oh, and Impulse has announed they are not going to Indy.

  6. I enjoy Crowns shows I just think it's funny how a lot of people hear it the first time and it's the greatest thing they have ever heard and championship caliber.

I expect Crown to be a steady top five corp and possibly win a championship in the next 5 years but like all corps musically coming out of the gate I wouldn't give them high marks.

Lot's of potential yes but good....Not yet.

    Meh.

This sounds like a little inter-corps jealousy IMHO. And from two normally classy organizations........

I think they are performing extremely well for this early in the game. It will be interesting to hear the quality of their sound while moving.

  7. Most corps are getting some news out about how their spring training is going, several with videos to showcase the first week of move in. Any changes to earlier predictions now that there is a little more to go on?

Here's my best guess, don't throw anything at me.

    1. Cadets

    2. Crown

    3. Phantom

    4. BD

    5. Cavies

    6. Blue Stars

    7. Madison

    8. SCV

    9. Bluecoats

    10.Glassmen

    12. Spirit

    13.Crossmen

    14. Boston

    15. Academy

    16. Colts

    17. Troopers

Flip SCV and Madison, and Troopers and Colts, and that would be mine.

  8. Don't stone me to death as I haven't been following my Blue Stars as closely lately as I should be, but what is with the tables? Are they a part of the show? I know they are doing "The Factory" so that *might* make sense...

Actually, the corps is so focused on rehearsal that they are having lunch served on them while marching. Very little wasted time there.

  9. When a rule like this is first put into play it's usually a middle-of-the-pack corps that goes nuts. For instance, when the amps where first put to use in 04, was it The Cadets that sang Broadway tunes? No. Me thinks the larger players give it some time for it to simmer a bit and see what works before going all out. That said...

My money is on BS, Gmen, Colts.

  10. Blue Stars has all of their camps and spring training in Indianapolis now. Many of the members come from IN and IL, as do many of their staff.

That could put a damper on any plans to start a new corps in that area.

If you go to the DCI webpage and click on "Corps", there is a link for "Corps Map". It seems to me that there is a big open hole if you start in MN and the Dakotas and go south through western Iowa, NE, KS, MO, AR and OK. THAT would seem to be the best area to get started with an Open Class corps, if you can find a community in one of those states willing to support it.
