  1. Anyone out there have videos from 1983 prelims - specifically placements 13-18: Crossmen, Alliance, Troopers, Knights, Les Eclipses, & Avant Garde?? I am willing to purchase, if available to sell. Some of the best drum corps music from that year (!), and would love to see the full show videos.

  2. Glad you started this thread. Came in late to a theater in Birmingham, AL and couldn't understand why I was watching Blue Stars in Akron?? After a half hour I decided to check the web. Read this and told the manager that we were being shown the wrong program. They fixed it very quickly and from the start. Cool

  3. How did you come about them?

I bought the bronze one (as it was all I could afford as a 23 year old), and my dad bought the silver and gold ones. Although I can't see him paying more than a couple hundred dollars for them. I believe we bought them at the DCI South show in Birmingham in 1989. I know the date says 1988, but I don't remember my dad going to a show in 88, My mom gave me his coins (I know they are not real coins), after he passed away. At this point I am just trying to get more information about them, as his are both numbered. Thanks.

  4. I am trying to get more information about 3 coins I have in my possession. One gold, one silver, and one bronze.

How many were made? How rare are these? Any approximate value? Are there more still available? Thanks for the assist.

The all say the same thing: On one side they have, "Jim Jones Years" at the top, "America's Corps" at the bottom, a picture of a Troopers hat on top of a pair of gloves in the middle, and "one troy ounce" under that.

On the flip side: "Troopers" at the top "1958" on the left "1988" on the right "30th anniversary" at the bottom. In the middle it has the Troopers crossed swords emblem, with the "11" above it, and "Casper Wyoming" below that. The Gold and Silver coins are both numbered "00122", the bronze is not numbered.

  7. You can contact Alumni Association President, Chris Hartowicz, at splooie@aol.com to coordinate the donation of the jacket.

Thanks for responding. Say hi to any of my southern friends down by you from my days with Spirit of Atlanta if you see them!

Paul, I will get in touch with Chris about donating my jacket, and thanks for the info. As a side note - You "hit the nail on the head" with your "say hi" comment. I marched with Hunter Moss in CV a few years ago, and other Spirit alumni, but living in Alabama leaves me lacking in the Drum Corps realm. I flew up to 3 rehearsals of the Anniversary Corps 888, but had to drop out due to travel difficulties. Too many hours and miles to travel, and too few opportunities to connect with my peeps down here. Growing up in Michigan in the early 80s, drum corps were everywhere it seemed, in the midwest and east. It is the very rare day that I run into someone (anyone) down here that has even heard of The Cavaliers. So while I still love to watch, listen, and currently play in the Rocketeers min-corps from Huntsville, I find myself wanting to share the "treasures" that I have collected over the years. Hello Ebay, haha. Take care, brother.

  8. Larry,

Please offer me the option of buying any of your Cavalier memorabilia first - IN PARTICULAR your corps jacket. I will give you a good price and then donate the jacket to a current marching member who can't afford his own. That's what many of us have been doing with our old member jackets the past few years.

Paul, While donating the jacket to the corps, if it is truly needed and will be used, is a great idea and one I would do without any need to be bought, two questions JUMPED at me: 1) How can a current marching member afford pay the $$$$$ to march, but not be able to afford a jacket? 2) Who would want to wear an almost 30 year old jacket, while their brothers are sporting new shiny jackets? (seems doubtful to me) As an 18 year old in 84 I would have had no desire to wear someone else's jacket from the 50s (or is that just me being shallow - haha). I am trying to be serious and not an ###, but is this just about keeping a jacket out of non-fmm hands? Thanks

  9. As I have boxes of Drum Corps memorabilia (aka "stuff") from early 1980s: yearbooks, pins, drum corps world mags, records, tapes, videos, programs, and also personal items (jackets, finals medal, etc..), and have been thinking about selling all of it for the last couple of years, I wonder..... How will I be crucified for my efforts to share my memories with others?? Many of these items have been sitting in boxes for the last 20-30 years, unappreciated by anyone other than me. I would wish for others, with the love of drum corps, to have a piece of history. I know the very passionate "discussion" about the selling of a fmm jacket, but I would rather see it in the hands of a drum corps fan who loves and lives for the art, than just hanging in my closet (because it sure does not fit anymore - haha).

  10. Seriously mates--this is getting so off topic.

Also, many people reading this does get it. But this isn't about getting it or not, its about historical accuracy. I have never been a member of "The Magic", but I was a member of Magic of Orlando. When the board of directors re-branded the corps as "the magic" they went back on everything that our corps accomplished in 02 and 03.

:sarcasm: So you mean lets move on.........but let me make another point before we do......

    Too funny "mate"

  11. You should not have called Magic of Orlando, "The Magic".

Many Magic of Orlando members participated before that organization choose to dissolve itself from their previous members. Magic of Orlando should be the name of all of the records put out before the board of directors re-branded the corps. I was never a member of "The Magic" in 02 and 03.

Also, if you are saying DCI Finals you are being insensitive. There are other corps who were in a division other than div I. I know this is a "World Class" discussion, but by saying DCI Finals without qualification is incorrect. There are/have been DCI finals that does not include Div I/World Class.

Stop being so ******* sensitive (calling someone else insensitive). Wow.

  12. Have you considered adding something to the older jacket that would indicate she's the child of an FMM?

What did you play in 84? We marched against each other.

That's an interesting idea - anything in particular you are thinking of? I'm drawing a blank.

Marched lead sop. Couldn't get enough of LaFiesta - GOOOOD STUFF!!!

  13. When I marched Cavies in 84 I was many pounds lighter, and about 20 years later, and after reaching the point that my corps jacket wouldn't (couldn't) zip up, I was given a new jacket by my family as a birthday present. They put alot of time into contacting Jeff F, who after verifying that I indeed was a FMM, allowed them to purchase a newer (larger) jacket. I promptly removed my old patches, transferred them to my new jacket.......and presented my old jacket to my 13 year old daughter. Which she wore a few times around her marching band, until she received her own corps jacket after marching CorpsVets with me in 06. She was proud to wear my old jacket and I was proud to see her in it - another moment of connection (which are in short supply with teenagers). Go ahead and rip into me for going against "the rules", but I don't regret it - any time I can share my love of drum corps with my family is golden.

  14. if the moment of which you speak is the "cowbell/contra" section of the drum solo, it's just a yell time from the corps.

Went back and listened again and I don't think it is - it starts during a solo in the closer and lasts about 25 seconds. Really, it sounds like something dropped (metallic sound like some metal poles falling on the ground) - some staff members yelling (loud conversation) back and forth. Listen to your record when you can and clock it- check it starting at 10:00 min and see what you think. Thanks - just curious.

  15. My 2 US Open memories:

    1) 1981 - My 1st time seeing Cavaliers and Phantom Regiment - I just could not understand how a corps that had a crowd on it's feet most of the show - screaming so loud - so much excitement - could lose by 4 points to a corps that had the crowd sitting on it's hands. Oh how young and naive I was.

    2) No show had a better program - still have mine!

  16. I've had a couple of questions for years and figure someone out there can illuminate me.

On the recordings from 1984, at about the 10 minute mark of Avant Garde's show from prelims - there sounds like " a commotion" on the field - I can't explain it any other way. Anyone know what happened - did the drum major fall off the podium??

Second question is at the end of the 86 Dutch Boy show - during the last few seconds of the 007 theme ending chords it sounds like an electronic device of some kind is used. It's pitch fits in perfectly with the chord - and hangs over after the corps is cut off for a couple of seconds - like someone didn't turn it off at the right time. Legal?? UFO?? Stadium sound system? Anyone??
