  1. I've seen Carmel, Onyx, and SCV online and Carmel is my favorite so far. I'm not a fan of the RnR (ripples and running) type of shows that Onyx does so needless to say I couldn't get into their show. SCV looks like they will be great again but the show I saw had so many drops. Not like SCV at all.

  2. Blue Knight have announced their 2013 staff:

I don't know anything about most of the names, except the two Hall of Famers. I'll have to ask my son what he thinks.

In the mean time, any thoughts from y'all...particularly about the three new members?

Tommy Keenum was responsible for those great Sky Ryders shows of the 80s; Wizard of Oz and West Side Story. He has also worked with Cadets, Pride of Cincinnati Winter Guard and Final Analysis WG. He is known for thought provoking and really emotional shows.

With JC, Tommy and Tim Pierce, I expect an incredible guard and some amazing story telling.

  3. I don't think Chick-Fil-A or DCI is serious enough to stage a boycott over. There are far more important things that might warrant that kind of response. With that being said, I understand people losing interest in DCI because of the way things are going. I get tired of nonsense too but I realize what is nonsense to me might not be to others so I keep it moving.

When I saw the way the season was going, I lost interest in driving miles to a show or even going to DCI at the movies. Will I stay away forever, definitely not. As soon as I get wind that someone is doing a certain something or this corps is making a surge towards the top, I will want to know and see.

I see it like this, if you don't like a certain artist, don't buy their music. Don't stop listening to music entirely. There will always be something out here for EVERYONE.

  4. I have a question and I hope that I am not flogged for asking it. The Cavaliers show looks like it has gone through a TON of rewrites and I think it is for the better. I actually like the show now. I still hate those guard uniforms. With that being said, some of it looks a bit like someone else's style. Is there a chance that a certain someone helped with the rewrites and is choosing to go uncredited?

  5. WOW! Is it me, or have the Cavaliers done a ton of rewrites since the beginning of the season. I actually like the show now. I don't LOVE like I have Cavies shows of the past but it reads much better now than before.

I don't want to start anything and I am not saying it definitely is the case, but a few things look kinda familiar. What's the chance that someone that used to design for them, giving them an uncredited hand in some of the rewrites.

Either way, way to go Cavies.

  6. Funny story; I have a birthday coming up and my sister who is a designer/seamstress, asked what I wanted for a present via email. This is my older sister who made all of my Drum Major uniforms when I was in high school. My response was new uniforms for the Cavalier guard. Her response was a simple "LOL" and a "it can't be that serious." I sent her a pic and her response was, "OH MY"

All and all, I still hope they have a successful season.

  7. I am loving that the Scouts are making that climb back to the top but have a question ( which I hope is NOT a dumb question). I knew they were doing Pictures but was kinda surprised when Malaguena came out of nowhere. I thought Reframed was a play on Pictures but is it more about re-imaginings of pieces of music from the scouts past?

  8. Sadly, I don't see Drum Corps gaining new fans that aren't attached to it in some form or fashion, i.e, members, parents, spouses, friends and etc. God knows I have tried to turn people on to it and have gotten quite a few WTF looks. And, this is from other music fans and musicians. I liken Drum Corps to Golf, some people think Golf is incredible and others find it boring as hell. Personally I love Corps and I want to learn to golf.

  9. It's still early and I wouldn't put anything past Cavies, I would not be surprised at all if they are a totally different corps come August.

I also agree with the above member who said The Cavaliers are more about tradition than they are about championships. I never got the chance to march with them but I wanted to so badly when I was in high school and they were not winning then. It was just something about that organization that spoke to me.

  10. visual design has an incredible amount of affect on the colorguard caption, and the opportunities that they have for choreography etc. Guard WILL look bad in a bad drill design regardless of how talented the guard members/staff is. while this visual design isn't HORRIBLE for the guard, it is not close to how gaines usually stages them

Agreed and Gaines is one of the BEST guard guys there is.

  11. That's a non sequitur. I don't mean to be rude but please tell me how Gaines leaving has any effect on the performance of the guard.

Maybe I could have worded that better. I knew Gaines leaving would hurt, I expected that. What I didn't expect was Cavies having a weak guard. I'm not saying Gaines leaving has anything to do with the guard being weaker. Actually I shouldn't even use the word weak, just not as strong as in the past.

  12. I'm a guard guy and guard and drill is the first thing that my eye goes to. Unfortunately my eyes go to the guard for the wrong reasons this year. Those horrible costumes and the equipment work is kinda dirty. I knew losing Gaines would hurt but I didn't see the guard being as weak as they are. It's early in the season but I don't see them being the Cavies guard I am used too.

  13. I TRIED to avoid WGI this year but of course ended up paying for the webcast midway through SW. I absolutely LOVED Carmel. I have no idea how those girls could dance, spin and then give a spoken word performance. I loved all the rifle tosses and the word "catch" being repeated over and over.

Flangan, Flangan, Flangan, where did you get kids that can spin a weapon like that. WOW! That was a clear cut win, in my eyes

Aimachi had a beautiful show but those friggin batons ruined it for me.

Cypress Ind was just beautiful and First Flight having a stronger 2nd start after the malfunction. I still think they should have moved ahead of Fantasia.

Being a southern church kid, who always asked far too many questions, I have to say that I LOVED Pride of Cincinnati. Wonderful show!

SCV has been my favorite guard of late and they were amazing. I know some didn't like the the narrator but I did. Awesome show.

Onyx..... now I absolutely HATED what Onyx did last year but have to say that I enjoyed them this year and think that they deserved the win. And the girl who did the figure skater like horizontal roll/flip thing. JUST WOW!

The negative - I have to say that I am not a fan of the "pre-shows." Most don't work in my opinion. One guard used Dead or Alive's You Spin Me 'Round..... WHY?

I did like the guard that used soundbites from guard shows of years gone by. I can't remember what guard that was but I LOVED them.

Also, from no floor to everyone having a floor to a few without floors (last year), to the floors turned on an angle, to the ripped up segmented floor? UGH!!!!!! I am over it!

Why did Pride even use a floor,it was the exact same color as what was covering the UD arena floor.

  14. I find it hilarious that you have Vanguard in 4th. I do agree with you on Flanagan for the win.

    i agree!

i'll take a shot at top 10 for IW and SW. here's how i think it might turn out..

    IW:

    10. Imbue

    9. Fantasia

    8. Black Watch

    7. Braddock

    6. Zydeco

    5. SAC

    4. SCV

    3. Aimachi (obviously just a shot in the wind)

    2. Pride

    1. Onyx

    SW:

    10. Norwin

    9. West Broward

    8. Arcadia

    7. Seminole

    6. Warren Central

    5. Lawrence Central

    4. Trumbull

    3. Carmel

    2. James Logan

    1. (insert bias here) Flanagan

  15. Personally I would support a guard or corps directly. Im actually kind of surprised that WGI just didnt make an announcement to guards to get in on it. I know people will claim the education that WGI provides , well i think there's pleanty of dues and ticket sales and fees to continue " education " there are guards literally starving for a buck and have to pay increditable amounts of money for a facility ( even HS guards sometimes)

Unless WGI is taking the 25 grand and directly putting it into the schlorship program which would be cool or lowering some entry fees that would be cool too
