  1. In spite of my advanced age, I seem to recall LOTS AND LOTS of green and gold cans in "cold storage" in the luggage compartments of the busses.

Unofficially, the official beer of the Westshoremen.....

    Genesee Cream Ale.

Brewed from the "sparkling" waters of the Geneseo River.

    Pure refreshment... :guinesssmilie:

    WTH were we thinking??????

Could explain numerous things.... not the least of which is why no one from any of the other corps ever asked for a beer from us!!

Yeah W, beer was BAD BITD. We just didn't know any better.

  2. you've been bald for 44 years? #### you ARE old

    :devil:/>/>/>/>/>

You just made me feel younger. I didn't realize that you are 43, so I need to revise my statement....

I've been bald since you were 5 years old.

Yeah, yeah, I know.... I'm STILL old!!! LMAO :thumbup:/>/>/>

  3. look you've been bald as long as I can remember, so you've always been old!

    :tongue:/>/>/>/>/>

( I know Wally will laugh when I tell him I said this)

Jeff, It's even worse than you know....

I've been bald for more years than you are old. Wally can verify that!

    ROTFLMAO :w00t:/>/>/>/>

  4. Second part here is a BIG thank you to part of Bridgemens horn line, Cabs flag line and Westshores horn line. For those of you who came down the right side (facing the stage) aisle you had to deal with a short guy and lady in a wheelchair kinda in the way. That was us as that was the safest spot for us to see the second half of the show as using our old seats was not a good idea. We carry the chair in the car when my wife needs go a long distance and walking would wear her out too much. All the corps members handled the tight spot very well and in a nice way. Only smart comment came from a Westshore contra and... hey he's known me for 39 years,,, and he was laughing... :tongue:/>/> Anyone sees us at DCA, stop and say HI so we could thank you personally. Any of you DCPers please feel free to pass the thanks to your fellow corps mates. :worthy:/>/>

    Jim,

Nice to see you on Saturday even if it was only a "fly-by". I wanted to stick my arm out at you as we were going in just to let you know that I saw you and to say "hi". You should really do this gig with us next year. Lots of fun without the pressure of a score. Think about it.... ya got a year to decide. :smile:/>/>

  5. Lately, I've been listening to of all things, the Hoyt Curtin compositions for Jonny Quest. Hoping to draw Baldy out on this one with all the nasty Bone work and arm flailing. The main theme and exit theme as well as most of the incidental stuff were basically a jazz ensemble with a buttload of trombones, the soloist was Frank Rosolino, the stuff is kickin' for music written for a kid's show. One of the reasons I loved the show as a kid myself.

A guy put together a lot of sound tracks on YT, you can do the searches on your own hint hint... and really, there's a mini-corps show in there if you had the right madmen. :satisfied:

W, lots of great playing (and arm flailing) going on in Hoyt's charts.

Many of the trombonists involved in the soundtrack for Jonny Quest were LA "first call" players. Top of the line players. I got a chance to talk with Rosolino MANY years ago at an International Trombone Association workshop at Belmont College in Nashville. He spoke about doing the gig to lay down the Curtin soundtracks for Jonny Quest. "A good time" I believe were his exact words.

Frank was generally a man of few words, but LOTS of notes. A great player.

If you were to "drop by" the LA musicians union hall on a Saturday morning say around 10am, you would find several of the players on the soundtrack still playing in a group called Bones West. This is a trombone only jazz ensemble originally started by George Roberts (Mr Bass Trombone). You might know him better as the sound of the attacking great white shark in the movie "JAWS".

  6. OK, again.... With apologies for how long this has taken...

So the on line hosting site I use (used?) ZShare - http://zshare.net) is STILL down.

It's been down for a while. So as to not wait until I could upload the 4/14/12 audio files to ZShare and post the links I do have an offer of a "Plan B". (I've been using ZShare for quite a while because everyone could listen and or download a copy of the audios if they wanted a copy. It's also free, nothing to join to listen and download a copy.)

    Plan B:

If anyone has a DropBox account (FREE at https://www.dropbox.com/home) or a Pando account (FREE at http://pando.com/) I can send all of the MP3 files at once. Of course I'm not saying everyone will want all 9 audio files.... The 9 MP3 audio files total 151MB.

    Plan C:

I am willing to email the MP3 audio(s) to anyone that would like a copy, however understand there are different file size limits (per email) for email providers. These MP3 audio files are between 13.7 and 22MB. (Though I don't know what file size limit ALL email clients have I do know if your using Verizon, Gmail and Yahoo you have a 25MB maximum attachment / file limit per email.)

I know "Plan C" is the hard way to get these audio files out but I'm willing to send them if your willing to ask for them. Send email requests (with the Corps, or Corps') you'd like a copy of...

(The list of MP3 audios available is the same as each Corps / groups listed below)

Email me (SunriserDM AT gmail DOT com)

Having said that, here are the links for the photos and the list of audios I have.

  7. I'll get to that later- During that time, I can't remember anyone from the horns fretting over any perc 'problems'. We knew they were busting their humps harder than we were- and the second you start pointing fingers--- well you have 1983 issues. All I can say is that in '82 and '83, I always felt percussion was taking care of what they had to do for us, and I think Mike can second that. We weren't paniced over a miscue, bad tempos, bad balance or dynamic levels, inconsistent performances of what they played, all that rot. We never had to look over our backs and worry about what they did.

W - I will heartily second your impression that the 82 and 83 hornline members never spent time worrying about the percussion section. We were glad to have a line that worked hard and could provide "percussive harmony" appropriate to the program genre. That had not always been the case under previous regimes. We had enough on our own plates making sure some members of the hornline that were not "jazzers" understood the context of some of the licks written in the book. I specifically recall the 83 mello break at the end of the bridge in for Love for Sale. Not sure they ever got that 100% correct. Definately had no time for pointing fingers.

  8. :w00t:

As per a previous note, I thought about how to try and re-soften the rubber/vinyl stops on bugle rotors.

There could be several solutions to this.

    OR...

You could just go to your horn technician and get a new set of bumps.

I actually have about a one-foot long piece of the bump stop "stock" that my tech gave me years ago to use as I need. I carry it in my horn cases at all times along with a small pair of scissors and a tiny bottle of rubber cement. It has come in very handy over the years. I have had the misfortune of losing a bump stop out of one of my valves on my bass trombone during a dress-rehearsal. Having that inventory of bump stock material saved the day (and the performance)!! I just cut off a new piece of bump stop and glued it in place.

Just something to think about.... unless, of course, you actually like fooling around with all of those petroleum based products.:satisfied:

My personal choice is rubber cement!! (nice aroma, don't you think?) :w00t:

  9. *sigh* Hey guys if you can, send a prayer my dads way. Got a call from his neighbor which is never a good sign. Dad hadn't been feeling well but went outside to do some things in the yard. Neighbor found him passed out about 50 feet from the last spot dad remembers being at and a gash in the back of his head. He's at Osteopathic and they will be running test to try to find what the heck happened. He's alert now but no freaking idea of why....

Edit: Just called the nurse and he's running a 102 fever that just kicked in about an hour ago... dang....

Sorry to hear of your father's misfortune Jim. Keeping him in our thoughts/prayers and hoping he fully recovers from this.

  10. So when the Hell did you join the corps man? So Dave has his personal 3v Kanstul? That's what the Lancers use as they finally finished outfiting us as the used G market dried up. Think I got mine (well the corps for me to use) July 2004 or 2005. BTW - IHOP breakfast at 1979 Canton, OH you ordered pancakes with strawberrys (lots of syrup) and whipped cream on top. You're half way thru eating and someone walks up, puts their hand on your shoudler and sez "Don't worry Mike, it wouldn't have lived". You flipped your fork in the air and we were done eating. Can't remember who said it but I can gross my wife out anytime with that story.

As for Jerry Yoder I have a program from 1979 NY area show (Barons of Steuben sponsored?) that has Fred (Freddy D##### Bag) Kurtz in front and Jerry and I in the background. LOL, this was the freaking cover on the program but it is all red tinted so hard to tell what corps it is. No idea when he switched to guard.

And *puke* Time Machine.... written by Meecho(sp) who did the disco Star Wars album the year before and had a hit. So the follow up was Time Machine (have that POS in the basement) and somehow the corps got the chart before the album came out. (There's a question for Larry). TM killed Meechos career pretty much as even People magazine had a bad review of it ("Everything sounds the same - boom, boom). No idea why but one of the Waa waa waa waaaaaaa notes was just OFF for the baris. Thank goodness we were going backfield but can't listen to it without cringing on THAT note. Of course we kept playing waa waa waa AKKKKK to compound the problem. Same deal with two(?) notes before the Impossible Dream theme in 78/79. Just one note that was kinda in between what it should have been. I know I hear it cuz 2nd Baris had that #### note.

    Hi Jim!

Yea, Fish rubs my face in "it" about his Kanstul each year during alumni rehearsals :w00t: . I'd love to get my hands on one as well, but they are real hard to find. Dave did invite me to play with Hanover if I wanted to play one that bad. I told him I would think about it. LOL!

I joined WS in 78 after attending a few contests and rehersals at Bruce Shaffer's beckoning in 77. I was playing with the Tyrone (Gardner) Guards in 77 and decided to wait until 78 to "jump" corps. Doing the parade gig at Tyrone was getting old. I had marched Jr Corps -- (The Barons Steuben believe it or not!!) as a kid growing up in Corning NY and was ready to do the competitive corps thing again. NO regrets! Lot of memories and great fun at Westshore. Continues now in the alumni corps as well.

I had forgotten about the breakfast in Canton OH until you mentioned it. I don't remember who said it either, but it sure ended breakfast in a hurry. Too funny!!!

I think Yoder switched to guard sometime during the winter rehersals for the 78 season. When I got there for winter rehearsals he was still in the Bari line, but next thing I knew he was "spinning a gun".

Time Machine... now there's a chart I could have easily lived without. Kinda like Alexander's Ragtime Band in 1978. Remember when we gathered up all of the parts and the score and burned the whole pile of paper in the parking lot at the old Balitmore Stadium after doing the halftime show for an NFL pre-season game between the Dolphins and the Colts? That's one way to get rid of a tired old chart!!

  11. 83 Westshore had DEG Dynasty 2 valves, 3rd Baris played the Euphoniums, somehting that I did NOT envy them for doing.

BD called their Euphonium players the "Monster Men" and for GOOD reason. Arms like Popeye to carry those beasts around.

I really disliked the DEG Baris. LOOOOOOONG and awkward to balance and carry. I know Bruce isn't keen on his in alumni for those reasons, Dave Fisher just seems to fatalistically smile, shrug it off and do his thing anyway with one of them, which I have always liked a lot about him. I guess being a pro firefighter makes you less picky about your personal axe.

The Kings like Mike/Baldy has that BD had in that era!? MUCH, MUCH, INFINITELY MUCH better! More responsive, slots better, lighter, better balanced to carry to boot. FAR superior.

I'm in good company on that opinion, BTW. Kenny Norman also agrees.

    Hi W!

Just to add some clarification on Dave Fisher's Bari. He is playing on his own personal Kanstul 3v. I guess he bought it quite some time ago. And yes, he LOVES it. It has all of the balance and intonation elements of it's cousin at King and then some. It is a very nice axe and no doubt explains that smile on his face!

Ziggy Kanstul used to be a part of the King Musical Instrument organization and, lets just say, he and the powers to be at King had a different vision on some things so he left King and formed his own company. This affected not only the marching brass world, but the professional players side of the house as well.

    Keep the story going, man.

  12. LOL... hey- I did three years in what Jim Prime Sr. called "The Hot Seat" for a good reason. This is actually FUN. If this had been around in '82, my guess would be that "It'll be close, but Sun's gonna make it happen" would be the consensus, and we'd have done what we did the way we did it and took our best crack at it anyway. :worthy:

I thought about the way we looked at the reviews, and it was actually pretty cool. I can tell you do a LOT more effect than I do, I'm mainly a hard-core analysis techie-geek.

I'm actually pretty excited for DCA as an organization. The three shows I went to were well-attended, a good mix of ages present and the crowd appreciative, and there are a lot of good shows and good ideas being presented by all of the corps. I know Tom Peashey says this repeatedly, some people get all mad and indignant when he does say this, and I have to say he's right. I looked for myself, and I'm very positive about it after seeing several shows for myself. My only wish would have been that I would have gotten to see MBI, Kidsgrove, and the Kilties this season. I know people like the Kilties a ton, they seem to have a corps full of really big-hearted individuals that love what they do from my observations, and I'd like to just see what's happening there for myself to understand it better.

The only things I've found find more fun recently are when I get to play a horn, teach, or break out my NSR 1/32 Gulf-Porsche 917 and stic kit on the slot car track and race it in the IHSR league I participate in. It gets my competition Jones satisfied!

Heh W, great review of the Reading show on the other other thread, man! I know this is off topic for this thread, but I wanted let you know I'm behind you 100% on the Tom Allen response. Go to his training web site he lists in his signature. There is a mission statement there for his business. One wonders how he can maintain that business mission statement and be 180 degrees from it in his personal life. I found it curious.
