  1. I don't know what Kevin Smith was thinking about but I don't much care for Crowns's new uniforms

espeacially the shako's or what you call them ? There's an old saying " If it works don't fix It ! "

Go back to the cream Kevin this was a Carolina Crown trademark , this is yours and yours alone I personally

think you made a mistake ! Smitty

  2. As I've said elsewhere and in this thread, this just isn't a Glassmen issue. Other corps are in trouble and even have folded due to the financial demands of "touring", "staff" and other issues associated with supporting a corps during the year. And when a corps budgets for a year and have things such as bus breakdowns and other issues on the road shortfalls will happen. What do you do then, rob Peter to pay Paul? I agree with those who say the current DCI touring model DOES NOT WORK! And I know there will be those who say well "look at Devils or Crown or Garfield"...We all know there will be exceptions to the rule but that rule is taking us down to maybe eight corps left when this is all said and done. I know this thread is regarding helping the Gmen stay around but for how much longer? If they and other corps that find themselves in finacial diffuculty HAD a stable plan and get through the next season I don't believe the current economic conditions will allow for continued participation. Donations, grants, dues and even corporate support (which is very limited as best) will not continue to support this activity. I keep seeing people just say well get off you butt and donate your time and money and "pay no attention to that man behind the curtain" and then at the end of the day the corps still folds. We NEED to get away from the Summer Touring model and let corps that have the financial means to tour do it and the rest be given a chance to stay local and go to the Championships for the big show. It should not be mandatory. I will be helping Glassmen but we can't keep seeing these pleas for help every year and for more and more corps.

This is exactly what I've been saying Kemo but with one extra addition we need to start up the smaller Drum Corps associations

such the " Great Lakes Drum corps Assciation " Mid-West assocition " West Coast , East Cpast and Southern States associations .

Like you said most of these corps can't afford these enormous expenses , DCI can't afford to not support this idea , yes DCI wil make less money but it's the nature of the beast , I hope someone comes up with a solution ! God Bless Drum Corps !!!!!

  3. There's a lot of work to be done behind the scenes I feel, but the great thing is this work can be done without having a negative impact on the corps on the field. The 2013 Glassmen will be another example of 150 kids coming together to put on a world class DCI show. They will be welcomed into a loving alumni and family environment, whether it's from an "organized" alumni association or not. The Glassmen family is strong and being built backwards, from recent age outs and down. When the oldest people realize that this corps is terrific and maybe they don't always know best, is when it will thrive. Smitty, certainly not a shot at you. But there needs to be trust especially from the eldest Glassmen family. And I feel that's what has lacked. Maybe a change in guard will offer the organization that privilege. They deserve it. The talent and staff are there. What's missing is a trust from the people that should stand firmest behind it.

I totally agree with you Matt I will send you a personal message tomorrow and explain some things that I cannot on this forum !

  4. I'll tell ya trying to get an alumni association going with the Glassmen is like trying to pull teeth , myself and some other

people not mentioning any names to protect them tried to do this a few years ago and all we got for our efforts was a form letter

from the corps delivered to myself by two certain people also who I won't mention any names I was never so hurt in my life ! This would've never cost the Glassmen any money whatsoever they even had the guts to tell to cease and desist using the Glassmen name

a name that I have been a part of since 1973 a name that me and several other kids at the time came up with Don't get me wrong I wan't to see this corps succeed more than anything really I do this , this is my corps as well as thousands of kids that have become Glassmen family through the years yes there are some Glassmen that I don't get along with but I still care for them emensely

but thats family even the ones that gave me that nasty gram  come on people we need an alumni association and we need it to be headed up locally and I'm not asking for the job but I do think that someone from the Toledo / N.W. Ohio area that is qualified to chair this organization should be offered the job . A meeting should be arranged by Mr. Stinson and the B.O.D. As soon as possible ! I would say to any younsters wanting to try out for the Glassmen for the 2013 season to go ahead I think that everthing will work out just fine This corps has world class instructors , great food and an " Experience of a Liftime " !!!!!

  5. When I saw that the White Sabre's hired Austin Jabault my jaw dropped you have made a great choice

Austin was a fantastic snare drummer for the Glassmen and he was under Rob Ferguson's wing during his time with the corps !

It will be very interesting seeing and hearing what he prouduces ! I wish your corps all the best for the up coming season !!!!!

    Smitty

  6. I am a Glassmen honk only because thats where I marched for 11 years but my next favorite corps is and will always be is the Cavaliers . This is a wonderful corps full of rich tradition and class never count the Cavies out , yes they might be having a tuff year but they will bounce back mark my word !! Oh yeah I almost forgot Congradulations on getting into the 80's

  7. 1- The financial model is unsustainable.

In very few activities can such a large financial output with a low ROI grow. Of these activities most are singular and those that require groups have an almost even cost vs income. While fans of this activity look at the return on a summer of traveling, learning and performing, the financial return just isn't there. Also there are what could be considered more "worthy" groups for grant or donated monies to be given. Most small business' would love to make a million dollars a year. But since many don't I don't see the chance for a DCI top 12 corps to last in this day and age. Sure there will always be those that make me out to be a liar but in the end money will make the difference.

2- To much competition from other activities.

In the 40's, into the early 70's kids had limited options on learning music or travelling. Now high school bands are almost touring and travel enough to satisfy their needs. And at a much lower cost. As a parent I would have no problem paying for my 17-19yo child to travel with the high school band, But in the summer they should be working to pay for things they want and get ready for college.

This is something I noticed as a volunteer firefighter. I joined at 15 and stayed. Most of my friends joined, most left but some also stayed. At one point we could say that every male in my neighborhood had been a member of the fire company. But then we found that kids had found other interest by age 15. electronics, girls, even drugs. We weren't the only fire company with this problem. We faced the same issues drum corps is going through.

This is were someone writes about the 1000's of kids who try out every year. Then how come we don't have 50 full size corps? How come corps are looking for players in the middle of the season when they had all these kids audition? Why can't they call up the kid of just missed out and say "hey we got an opeining want to march" But no they are seeking an almost unknown quanity to fill a spot. How many kids who tried out and then seen a notice about an opening on that corps is now thinking "why aren't I good enough to call, to hell with drum corps" The number of kids who try out are a massive fraction of members of high school or college band. Its not as big as you think

    3- There is no oversight.

DCI is one of the few if only activity of this type that is self governed. Just think if baseball had the same model. Each year the Yankees, Red Sox, Phillies, Rangers and other winning clubs made the rules to make it harder for other teams to win. How long would the fans of the other 30 plus clubs rise up and revolt. DCI has become boxing except only one governing body. They make rules that help the larger corps (themselves) and do nothing to assist smaller corps. How could they do that. Reduce the needed equipment each corps has. No electronics, smaller pits reduce allowed props on the field. Highlight open class corps during the simulcast. And by that I'm not talking a quick 1 minute highlight I'm talking 3-4 shows in full light world class corps. But why help someone get better to beat me, I wouldn't.

4-There is no real competition in DCI.

Okay this might cause the most controvesary because I'm going to get tons of examples were corps A only beat corps B by 9/10's or how each years theres movement and this year the Cavaliers will finish outside the top 4 for the first time in decades. Sure all true, but what chance does the Colts, or Crossmen or even the Academy have of winning. I'm talking about finishing 12 this year and winning next year. NON, ZERO ZIP NADA. Only in DCI is that not possible. In baseball you get worst to first, baseball, heck even tennis once in a while but never DCI. But in DCI the top 12 run things. Maybe thats way theres been so little movement in the top 7. The major leagues want parity. It creates more competition. Who wants to see every football game win 35 to 7. But thats what we get with each show. If I see a line up of Cadets, Bluecoats, Crossmen, Surf I'll get the right order of finish 9.5 out of 10 each time. I bet most fans can pick the right order of finish for the next 10 shows, no real competition.

5- Theres no next generation of corps

In the 70's and 80's we had the Glassmen, Bluecoats, Blue Knights and some others coming up the ranks. There was alsways that group of 15-25 corps around that could make a move up. And in that group there were some really entertaining corps outside of the top 12. Right now we have a good 25-30 strong junior corps.

Another factor is that its too dangerous financially to start a corps. It takes what, $100,000 maybe $50,000 to get started without talking about touring. Bingo as no longer a viable income generator. Grants are hard to come by and inconsistant. If we get a new corps every 2-3 years and we're losing a corp a year it means the death of the activity. More people are upset over the lost this year of Teal Sound but almost overlook the lost of a corps that was supposed to be celebrating 75 years, the Racine Scouts. Until one of the big 7 drops out a year no one will wake up.

What this activity needs is more corps like Pioneer who are stable financially and operationally.

I said this a couple of few years ago and now this MONSTER is rearing it's ugly head !! What we need in this activity is to bring back the smaller circuits for example the Great Lakes drum corps , the Badgerland circuit , etc yeah it would cost some money but if managed correctly I believe it would save our activity . Bring back the smaller Mom & Pop drumcorps of yesteryesr , sure you would have some of the bigger corps such as Blue Devils , Cadets , Cavies etc , unless this isdone then I'm afraid Blackstar is right DCI and drumcorps is a thing of the past , after all the kids of todays corps don't even get to have any fun anymore all they do is go from town to town bust there humps in HELLISHLEY HOT weather perform and get back on the bus and do it all over again . This sucks Yeah I know some of you are saying , well this is what drumcorps is , well it dosn't have to be ! Let's face it we have just gotten to big for our own shoes ! I hope and pray that someone dose something soon or this thing we call drumcorps will be history !

  8. From the Legends Facebook page:

Tickets for the Legends Drum Corps Preview on Wednesday, June 20 will be available at the gate for $17 each on June 20 starting at 5:30 p.m. All seats are General Admission. Arrive early for the best seats.

Wish I could be there , but latly everything has been last minuet for me because of health issues I can't wait to see the

spread between Glassmen and Troop and now Blue Stars are in the mix this is going to be very interesting to say the least !

I don't see how the judges can slot the corps when a new adjudicating system is in place , other wise whats the sense ?

  9. The new drums and uniform changes look great , not new uni's just a little tweek but nice , family day is tomorrow and it will be a hot one ! I hope that we have a good turn out we usually do ! Smitty I almost forgot family day is at Wauseon High School .

  10. Paul,

This post brought a tear to my eye. The bad kind. You want to release private information and talk negatively about the drum corps that you claim to love in a public forum, then I will release private information about you in the same place. Now, I know that we're gfam for life and when our paths cross again I will absolutely give you a hug for that, but: REALLY?! You. know. better. I know that you only marched one year, but that's no excuse. Even rookies know that we AS A FAMILY like to play things close to the chest. You gotta buy into that, man.

If you really want to assert your love and support for the Glassmen, then by all means donate some money to the gas fund or come volunteer at Spring Training. The people who put forth an effort to stay connected don't have to hear anything second hand and don't share it with the general public. You clearly have several suggestions for the drum corps... you think BH spends time searching these forums for helpful hints? I wouldn't think so-- give him a call! I'm sure he'd love to catch up with you. Posting about problems is just silly because instead of fixing them, if anything, it magnifies them. Maybe instead of being a part of the problem you could be a part of the solution. If you know someone who has a degree in public relations, can generate positive pr, and is willing to work for free I bet Brian would be more than willing to at least hear you out. Marching for one year gives a person minuscule insight into what it takes to run a drum corps and even people who have been on both sides of the field for decades will tell you they still learn new things all the time. Social media may be the latest craze but it is not what makes a drum corps successful.

As for the 50th being "a disappointment for most alumni" SHAME ON YOU. That drum corps was amazing-- a great group of professional performers and a powerfully emotional show that I don't think that any other alumni would come forward to claim it as a disappointment. I certainly disown that statement as an alum and within hours I believe I could easily conjure up 100 alums to agree with me.

So please please please make good on your promise to the Glassmen to "support them and the members in whatever way I can" by keeping your mouth shut on here except for positive encouragement. In general I have never been a fan of dcp forums (I mean, c'mon we joke all summer that "Those who can't march, teach and those who can't teach, judge--those who can't judge post on dcp") but if you must post on here please use it to build up and strengthen Glassmen's image not tear it down. Maybe next time before you hit 'add post' you'll think to yourself: What would BH post? (p.s. the answer is probably nothing; let the corps' actions on the field speak where an internet presence cannot). The absolute best place to move all future posts is to the Glassmen Family facebook group that is invitation-only and made up of exclusively former and current Glassmen family. Please remember that you will always have the privilege and responsibility of representing the Glassmen with every post you make online.

Man like you said , if you can't say something nice then don't say it at all !
