  1. OK GET WITH IT OLD DRUM CORPS PEOPLE. THE BEST DRUM CORPS WAS NOT FROM THE 70'S. WAS IT LOUD? YES. WAS IT OUT OF TUNE AND CRASP WITH A BUNCH OF GUYS THAT WERE PLAYING STRAIGHT BUGLES THAT SOUNDED LIKE TIN? HELL YES. IF IT WERE STILL LIKE THAT WE WOULD BE MAKING BOA AND GOD FORBID COLLEGE MARCHING BANDS LOOK LIKE THE PROS OF MARCHING AND DON'T GET ME STARTED ON DRILL FROM BACK THEN EITHER.

LETS ALL LINE UP IN ALINE AND MARCH ACROSS THE FIELD AND MARK TIME MARCH FOR ABOUT 12 MINUTES. DON'T FORGET PLAY AS LOUD AS YOU CAN WITH NO SENSE OF TONE QUALITY EITHER AND HARDLY ANY TALENT. OH AND THE DRUMLINES WERE PATHEDIC.

THE BEST DRUM CORPS BOTH DESIGN QUALITY OF SOUND AND SHOWS WAS BETWEEN 1987 AND 2001 BUT TO BE HONENST MORE SO TO THE LATE 90'S LIKE 99.

ALL YOU DRUM CORPS OLD PEOPLE HATED STAR OF INDIANA, BUT THEY WERE THE ONE'S IN THE LATE 80'S THAT MADE DRUM CORPS SOUND AND LOOK PROFESSIONAL.

I DON'T LIKE THE VOICE STUFF AND I'M AN ALUMNI OF CADET, BUT KNOWONE LIKED THE STAR SHOW FROM 1993 WHEN IT CAME OUT BUT NOW YOU TALK TO PEOPLE THAT MARCHED ANY CORPS BACK IN THAT TIME AND THEY WILL TELL YOU THAT IS ONE OF THE BEST PERFORMED AND CLEANEST AND COOLEST INOVATIVE SHOWS THEY HAVE EVER SEEN.

    ENOUGH SAID.

Man you are probably one of the most ignorant people I've seen post anything on DCP , Good luck with your anger problem's

  2. This was something that occurred during the broadcast- not sure if anybody live in Pasadena would have caught this or not, but it's something that upset me and I wanted to share.

During the lead-in to Cadets' show, the broadcasters talked about how Cadets' show was controversial, which frankly was to be expected.

But then something happened that I did NOT expect.

Dennis Delucia made the comment, and I quote, "All the fans who are opposed to narration, get over it for 10 or 12 minutes"

This may be just me, but I was VERY offended by that comment, especially given the nature of the person who said it.

I've never met Mr. Delucia personally, but I certainly admire his accomplishments and service in the drum corps community, and I've found him to be a knowledgeable and enjoyable part of the broadcast experience over the years as well.

But for him to make that kind of Bill O'Reilly-esque comment to the fans during a live broadcast was frankly rude and extremely unprofessional as well.

As a drum corps guy, Mr. Delucia is certainly entitled to think whatever he wants about narration. But to make such a inflammatory comment to a live audience, in my opinion, violates the ethical standards that journalists should possess.

I don't know what action, if any, will be taken about this, but I hope that somebody brings this to Mr. Delucia's attention and he has the courtesy to apologize for his comments.

  3. Ok -- here's a question I have ALWAYS wanted to ask, but was afraid to for fear of loosing a limb -- or getting my home or car blown up!!!

We all know the little, quirky, indescribable inadequecies we've ALL witnessed as far as scoring/placements and the judges who score at drum corps shows over our years, and some facets as well as judging criteria that "has been" made public to the average person (in "DCI Today" among other places) is very 'grey' and has ALOT of variables in said criteria that seem very person specific and how that leads them to judge a corps. It all seems to lean more & more towards a 'personal opinion' or, certain likes or dislikes than actually scoring a set list of criteria. SIMPLY PUT!

Go read the artcle in "DCI Today" last seasons copy where various judges listed their experience and "what they use for analysis" when judging their respective areas , be it guard, perc, ensemble, brass etc, etc, etc. It was mind blowing to read "I listen for this....." or "I look for that..." which is ok, BUT CAN a person who has NOT ever marched any corps at all, judge various degrees of difficulty in playing, drill, design and ensemble etc if they were never really involved to KNOW what it all encompassed?

Are their requirements that must be met to be a DCI judge in any area BESIDES being a band teacher or professional musician, or -- for that matter, a broadway show designer? I have been dumbfounded by the judging system in the past 3 years -- and delerious trying to decipher it all. I say this because I heard/seen/attended shows where certain corps are rewarded for 'how fast the play & run' - where others, are crucified, even when others (aside from judges) see them as clean, good feet etc. While some corps get astronomical scores for drill and 'design' when most of the time they are standing still and playing and the only movement is in the colorguard or the pit --- where other corps (several) are running their butts off and get poor design/drill scores? Even if they are clean!??!

Why is there so many captions WITHIN captions anymore? It's almost breaking down a human hair to the follicle and analyzing it, comparing it to other peoples and trying to give it a score! How can this be done FAIRLY when say, a brass judge, anywhere, has never marched corps, but is a professional jazz musician and teacher and is now a judge? Would not their tastes in music lean more towards the familiar (jazz, popular etc) as say, opposed to Classical? Or, say a classicaly trained musician, say a percussionist who has marched and that's it - judge all styles, musical types etc?

I am a professional musician, college educated and never really see bios or skills on judges, nor, ANY criteria or necessary skills in order to judge. Can folkws enlighten me?

I have degrees in horn performance and have taught bands as well as knowing several BOA judges, and even a few that are now DCI judges -- what is the job requirements -- I might just apply!

:satisfied: How can any kind of execution be adjudicated from a press box i.e. perc or brass unless it's drill & design . It's just plain impossible to do that correctly and fairly ! And if these judges aren't judging execution then what are they judging ?

  4. Also thought "Guess I'm getting too old for this ####" which is VERY ironic that it's being discussed now as I hit 50 next week. :P  :sshh:

PS - First big complaint I heard about DC changing was those ####### marching bells... B)

Hey everybody remember when the Kiltie's put one single tympany with a crank handle and one guy playing a single stroke roll and another guy was cranking the hell out of that handle to hit the highest note possible along with a lead soprano who if memory serve's me correctly was the great ( Ken Norman ) also cranking his horn up and then tossing his horn in the air about 25 to 30 ft. So you see drum corp's have been evolving since they began and will continue to so . Let all hope so or activity will eventually become so stale and boring that it will die . Some naration seem's to be ok but I believe the Cadet's did a little to much . Just my opinon .
