  1. To go along with what "Oouga" is saying, being a BK alumni member, it sure is nice to hear folks speak up about their love for the corps. What I love about them (among many things) is how their vis. staff (Rob Billings and Roger St. Vincent) have stuck to their collective guns and developed a style and look that NOBODY else has.

    It is unique.

    It is fresh.

    It is different.

What's awesome is if you look back at the 97-99 seasons, when they first started to get into their "style", and then, look at this past season and see how far along they have come...amazing!

Here's a tip of the ol' hat to you BK, thanks for doing what you do!

p.s. Bring back your cymbal line!!!

  2. Yes John was, in fact, the very first male to ever see my bare bottom. He lifted my kilt when we went "oobie", which, of course, means no undies. I'll never forget my "first"!

By the way, I am now playing with the Portland Trailblazers Groove Machine drumline! Rudimental snare after all these years! Yikes! But I can still play flam drags!

Mary Gromko Murray (Hi Kelli and Gisele)

    MARY!!!

Ladis and gents, it's true, Mary still posses some serious hands! Even now, 20 years later, on Kevlar!! nice and relaxed....

I have to say, it is pretty ###### hot to see such a sophisticated woman throw down some flam drags!

hehehe, just teasin' Mary! Can't wait until you're able to jump in full time!!

  3. I think the obvious choice that some of you are missing here is Vicki Schaffer, the Colt Cadets director and current Open Class coordinator. She is doing some amazing things to help Open Class groups get a stronger experience and further enhance the way these groups are judged.

After spending two summers with this gal, I know what patience and dedication to youth is really all about!

She is a work horse and never stumbles when it comes to the cause of music education and youth!

    Love ya Vicki!

In extra, I think anyone that is willing to check their ego at the door to help out in the Open Class world is truly an amazing person. It takes a lot to actually develop a YOUNG group of kids - not just call out ticks. To all involved in Open Class, thanks, you are the true teachers of the drum corps world!

  4. If you're going to pay for something, then you should get the most from that investment.

If you want a ring to come along with that investment...good luck!

If you merely want a good time with friends...right on!

If you want to go be taught by someone specific...good for you!

If you want to try all the varieties and flavors out there...super cool!

If you have the money, and you want to march, march when and where you want!

If you feel like you have to justify it...why?

    your money...your choice. period.

  5. Actually, if they are not-for-profits, all their books are up for public examination by law. This probably can be found out, with some sluething...

I'm pretty sure this has been mentioned before. If not, oh-well.

    www.guidestar.org

I believe that's a website that has all account info for most, if not all, non-profits in the USA.

p.s. If you teach for money, you're teaching for the wrong reasons. It is widely excepted that teachers get peanuts for what they do. Is it right or wrong...who knows. I'd say NO! But hey, it's the system that was created.

  6. I can go either way on this topic. Obviously a man of Paul Rennick's stature and talents can most likely make a hollowed out log with plastic wrap for heads and rubber bands for tension sound "descent". However, being that I've taught lines that have utilized both of the brands in question, (infact, my HS uses Dynasty indoor drums...they take work, just like any other drum - but you can make 'em sound good) I always go back to the old percussion adage that states, "It's not the drums, it's the players"!!!

Say what you will about Dynasty, but I, for one, am excited for Al and the rest of his team on his continued growth and success. I'm also stoked for the new Mapex series and any new brand that may come out.

Do I love the sound of those deep shell Pearl quads - Hell yeah!

Do I love the sound of those reefed Dynasty quads - Hell yeah!

Do I think that Paul and his team will still put out a superior product with whatever company they choose - Hell yeah!

That being said, I really do wish the Dynasty folks would address the awkwardness of their carriers. The weight displacement inbetween the shoulder blades and in the lower back leaves a bit to be desired.
