A few comments include the "Master" Hy Dreitzer and 'what a salute to the New York Skyliners.
What a tribute to Hy, having his music actually played on Broadway ! No, not in a Broadway theater, but on the actual Great White Way.
And what a hoot watching Russo, of all people, conduct Skyliner music !!!

IIRC, the Hawthorne Caballeros did a State Dept. Cuban tour in 1956.
-
What about "Public Domain" music?
DCI happily pays the standard licensing fees to the arranger, even on unregistered works.
-
Adding to the confusion, the Emerald Knights were formed from a merger of the Cedar Rapids Bees (feeder corps to the CR Cadets/Grenadiers) and the Scarlet Angels drill team.
BTW, CR is only ~80 miles from the Quads.

Don't know about Bernstein, but I know that Ron Nelson was very unhappy with Cadets' "Rocky Point Holiday," both artistically and from the legal/copyright point of view. I think he sued them
Some of us from deeply within the activity can also be very unhappy with what program coordinator/caption head people do with our material.

Bob Barker has the answer.

Just wait until we get woodwinds. I'm told flutes backfield is totally awesome.

bob ashton made a copy of his A.L card for me in case i was carded.
The first time I competed with a senior corps at VFW State, I had a card.
My name was Angelo Capriotti and I was a WWI veteran.

#472 has been seen standing in front of assorted corps and flapping his upper extremities, imitating a flightless chicken.

FWIW, the real Guess Who action recently has been in the hot topix in the DCA forum.

Man this looks a lot like Phantom Regiment.
For the same reason that the St. Mary's Cardinals looked like the Garfield Cadets.
For the same reason that the Stardusters looked like the Royal Airs.
For the same reason the Westshoremen looked like the Blue Devils.
-
No drum corps that I've ever heard of in the history of the activity has ever been banned.
You probably weren't in attendance, but did you ever hear about the 1966 American Legion Nationals?
And, a few days earlier, the VFW Nationals?

John Simpson was just a Kansas kid in the USAF Bolling Field corps at the time. He had already sacked out for the night, they woke him up to make the recording which was done in a single take.
Right now I am restoring two Getzen DeLuxe slider bass-baritones for him. One will remain stock, the other is being hot-rodded. Meanwhile, Johnny is home in K.C. playing long tones on his bass trombone.
A personal mission of mine is to get adults playing their instruments again. John Simpson will be my prize subject.
Frank Doorite (mastermind of the 310ers) is plotting a quartet of vintage baritone artists. Along with Simpson, he has been recruting Billy Hightower, Baby John Chalmus, and the incomparable Bobby Gaff. Look for appearances at BHOF and DCA I&E.
Johnny has also been invited to join in a trio with me and a certain West Coast mellophone player of the female persuasion. But we'll use those new-fangled 2-piston King G bugles.

you really need to get out more
Boo, we want to take you out on a snipe hunt. It's great fun !!!

Thousands upon thousands of miles in those grungy old Silversides - - - - - the AAG weren't just your everyday bandos.

And now for the rest of the story:
Kiltie DM Carl Last was a seminarian, and on Sunday mornings he would round up all known baptized Catholics and herd them over to the nearest church.
The non-practicing Catholics had to find places to hide. The photos above show a couple of guys who billeted in a nearby city park.
Another baritone player just chose to sleep at the housing, up on the flat roof.

Jeff - a prominent person in YOUR corps is the godchild, and namesake, of the late husband of #4.

You've had the soprano in your car for FIVE YEARS ???
Some places where I've taught, you couldn't leave a shiny horn in a car for five minutes.

Kingsmen playing a little Knight music. Will wonders ever cease ???

Here is a nice one of the best all time Kiltie uniform, at least one of the most authentic.
What's authentic about wearing a work hat with a dress uniform?
What's authentic about wearing baseball socks?
What's authentic about a brooch made from chromeplated motor laminations and a bicycle reflector?

The 4th valve can come in more handy than you think with a non-compensating instrument. I use mine more than you'd think I do.
"Don't even need a 3rd valve" sez the dude who stood next to you and read off your Bb parts - - - - - - on a 2 valve K-70.

In DCI, it was still entry over the traditional starting line in 1972. Then allowed entry over half the back sideline in 1973, and over the whole back sideline in 1974.
DCA countered by allowing onfield starting,. I don't remember the year but I remember the first corps I saw do this. A group in red called the New York Skyliners.
DCI did not follow suit for several seasons. WAG, 1979.

Not a fan of instructors requiring whole lines on identical pieces.
credit Scooter for this one: would you recommend everyone wears the same size shoes ???

The Kilties performed during halftime at the Packers/Colts playoff game in Green Bay on Dec. 26, 1965.
It wasn't just their pistons and rotaries that froze.
