  1. Anytime the audience stood and clapped the last minute or two are definitely the best moments of all time. I felt like the last two minutes of Cadets 2011 was like hitting third base and sprinting for the final home run.

But there are too many others to list. Does 2011 go down as the greatest season of all time? I think so. But it's my opinion, if I'm in the minority, that's fine.

  2. I said Cadets because I am crossing my fingers they are just as clean as BD. If that's the case, they will take it.

Blue Devils also have a reason to win, so I can't count them out. Same with Cavaliers, they could come back like crazy.

Dang....I just don't know.....so tough. I'll make it to the theater tonight (hopefully).

  3. Well....in my opinion, I believe the most influential drum corps show in RECENT history would have to go to Blue Devils 2010.

They, like Star 93, took the rule book and tore it up. Listening to the show is very hard on the melodic ear and you even have to listen to the source material. Plus the mirror work is just pure genius. The design was unlike anything we were expecting and nobody was ready for it.

Like Cesario once said, the Blue Devils have been changing the game. 2010 was no exception. I would love to see another show go that far in innovation. It was either nail it completely and be remembered forever, or miss an inch and it falls completely.

I believe this show is also responsible for the adjudication sheets to be changed too. But that's my opinion.

  4. Exactly. But I know Phantom changed quite a bit visually, so that their numbers weren't maxing out in Denver....

We'll see what happens this weekend, I know Crown is putting in a new ending, so maybe Devs have something up their sleeve too.

Ok my somewhat reliable sources say PoL. I'm not sure why they would do that for the past 2 years, but let's hope it's something different.

Anyway in terms of Devs in "trouble," The Cadets have always been in a much better position this year in terms of GE smoking the charts and down in execution. The Cadets are getting cleaner, so that could mean "trouble" for BD.

But in the name of execution, BD will still be on top. Cavies aren't touching those two as far as I'm concerned.

It will remain very close to the end.

  5. This should have been a poll thread.

Anyways.....the top 4 each have a reason to win DCI. Here's my take:

Blue Devils - In the end, it's all going to come down to execution. Blue Devils had somewhat of a slow start but I knew they would catch up and go for the top 2. If you look at the clarity of the visual package (they win the best jazz-running of 2011), it's undeniable. Although General Effect is their weakest area, they know how to execute. It's that simple, and we could see a 3-peat in progress.

Cadets - General Effect is off the charts smokin'. Everyone gets the show, the audience connects with the program, as well as the judges, so this would be a perfect show for Cadets to win. The weakest area so far would be the visual side, while brass is pretty good and percussion is pretty solid. All they need to do is CLEAN. CLEAN. CLEAN. Next thing you know we could be seeing a repeat of 2005.

Carolina Crown - Brass is kicking ***, and so is their marching. I'm wondering about their percussion and guard though, and the show is actually coming together a little more and the audience loves what they do. Some people may still call Rach-Starr cheesy, but Crown ain't no cheesy corps. They are consistent the past few years in terms of music, so this is their moment to shine.

Cavaliers - I believe there are no weaknesses that put Cavies significantly down. Other corps have weak areas but I don't think this group does. It was very apparent in the June show, and they have yet to clean the new added stuff. There's nothing weak about The Cavaliers this year....it's truly unmistakable. And the show is pretty sick too. Cavaliers will definitely shine in the visual caption, especially for guard and visual effect.

So there. I have no idea who's gonna win, but this is the most exciting DCI season in my memory.

  6. Funny, I'm listening to 07 (sans narration) professional recording at this very moment. Had it remained as I hear it right now .. Cadets would have won.

Well this is no opinion but a fact....Cadets have won before WITH narration in California (Stanford and Clovis). And if you listen to the GE music judge, he was fine with it, and in fact I think it kept the GE score up.

That's if you have the 2007 DVDs....you can just listen to the GE judge comments and hear for yourself...

Now my opinion: if we took away the narration, I feel the GE would have gone down a lot and we would have ended up in 4th or 5th.

  7. After doing a run through in 2007, we were told that we could do quarterfinals for that run. That was in Colorado, two weeks before finals. I almost though George was joking, but after being a part of the corps for 25+ years, he would never lie. But I believe there is no score high enough for Cadets 2007....after being a part of that corps, I will not lie, we were truly monsters and conquered the show. I will talk about it until the day I die.

I also have to give props to Crown 2009. I hated to admit their brass was top-notch, but it was the truth. If you did this poll with the same corps, but with brass as the focus, I would have given it to Crown 2009. Sensemaya at 210/220 in 7/8 time? And it sounded freakin' good. Show concept flowed beautifully, and the beginning of the show was, and still is, the most musical and most innovative of all time in DCI.

    So there. My two cents.

  8. Northern VA has some powerhouse HS music programs (they focus more on the concert side) and it is an untapped resource by DCI, IMO. That said, these schools also don't end until the middle of June, so that is its own issue.

Yes you are correct. In this NOVA area it's all about the concert bands, and maybe a little marching band. I've seen some very good indoor guard and drumline programs in Fairfax and Loudoun, including Chantilly High School (their indoor percussion won Scholastic Class A finals in WGI).

I do want to add that if there is any place in Virginia I call the capital of marching arts, it's Hampton Roads (for all you non-Virginia people, that's southeast around Virginia Beach, Chesapeake). Those high school bands march like no other in the state....they live and breathe the activity.

I was helping out with recruiting for The Cadets one fall and I was at one USSBA show in Herndon (35 bands) and the 2nd show in Virginia Beach (12 bands). I got more interest in Cadets from the 2nd show than I did the 1st show....

  9. After what I saw last night, the top 5 is going to be the biggest catfight in DCI history. I didn't really see a clear winner since all the corps have developed differently (and are continuing to do the same).

Blue Devils - They can march. And the hornline can play. Dang! GE music....eh....but I'd give them some time to tweak it out.

Cavaliers - They looked very good for this time of the month, better than last year. Just a couple music ensemble issues, but nothing major. Brass sounded very good, though. Can't count them out of the top 2, but things could change.

Bluecoats - Visually, I was not impressed. However, the percussion wants to win the Fred Sanford. Don't quite agree the 7th place placement from the 2nd night, but that's just me.

Crown - I am hoping they make the preshow/beginning of the show a little more developed because something didn't feel right for me. After that, let me just say the design is top of the line at this point, visually and musically. Watch out everyone....

Cadets - So I knew they would be dirty, mainly because of endurance issues. I was surprised I didn't get much brass from them, but the show concept ties together nicely. They won't have a problem with GE once they get clean.

Phantom Regiment - The brass needs some serious help. They sound like early June. Percussion has gone through a change now that you cannot hear Paul Rennick. And yes, the all-female guard is the best choice for them and the show.

Santa Clara Vanguard - Percussion spells Paul Rennick big time. They were truly on fire, probably the best part of the corps (like Bluecoats). This, I believe, is a good signature SCV show, similar to the corps from the late 90s. That's what it reminded me of. But they have to execute.

Blue Stars - I was not surprised to hear Blue Stars finish 8th overall, because of composition. The past 3 years they have been consistently in the top 8, and last year they looked and sounded pretty decent. But the reason this corps has not moved anywhere is the design. However, that's my opinion. But man, that brass was LOUD!!! Dirty, heck yes, but they are putting sound out.

I have never imagined I'd see groups looking and sounding this good in June. I almost thought it was mid-July (even with Cavies' incomplete show). There's no corps clearly in 1st place, and anything can TRULY happen. But we didn't even see the rest of the 15 or so corps....

  10. Its funny, this is my first summer home in a few years.

But I usually left finals forgetting what place we had finished in. It didn't matter.

Sounds like the experience of a lifetime is superior over numbers on a judges' sheet. This is probably the best sportsmanship comment I've seen on DCP.

  11. HERE WE GO!!

In 09 we had a truck run over a one of our euphoniums, her water jug, and her uniform! Here is the end result of that  She really had to open up her sound after that  and she was always really flat after this

Good lord....now a contra wreck seems like nothing to me. Just another day in drum corps.

Oh and how much did Boston Brass charge for fixing this? There had to be a charge...

  12. Haven't read through the pages, but here Are my picks for the most overrated shows of the last decade:

    2003 SCV

    2004 Cadets

2005 Cavaliers (as much as I love it this show)

    2006 Cavaliers

    2007 Blue Stars

    2007 Academy

    2007 Blue Devils

    2007 Cadets

    2008 Blue Devils

    2009 Cavaliers

2010 Carolina Crown (had to do it)

Strongly disagree with those two. And not because I marched one of them....

I remember seeing BD 2008 live in West Chester and thought "####, they're going to win. They're just that good."

  13. Heh, I grew up listening to those recordings. You are totally right, though I still think the band sounds decent today, even if they're not quite what they were a few years ago in the days of Rooney. However, the current brass studio is pretty astounding. Went to a Wind Symphony and Brass Band concert recently, and they sounded better than ever.

I don't remember the last time I went to see the Wind Symphony or the Brass Band, but those two ensembles alone put JMU among the top in the country for talent. I'm not saying it because I was in the brass studio, but this is a true FACT.

I was never into Brass Band, but if they were a drum corps, they would musically rival Blue Devils.
