  1. Just Curious.....but wasn`t Premonition part of the splinter group when Media split in two? They had such a great run last year with that their talented members I can`t wait to see them this year !! Best of luck :)

I think it was something like that, I heard they had over 40 at auditions!

  2. Hey while we are at it....why not go back to no electricity and wooden ships...

I agree! Break out the shakos and riding boots, give me some butt flops and high mark time. Really?? I think we'd all last about one year looking the same and we'd all go crazy. The dinosaurs are extinct for a reason let's not lose our minds.

If this is financially based conversation the biggest killer in independent colorguard is rehearsal space cost. Ask any independent director what their biggest headache is.

  3. Michael beat me to it but let me re-iterate......

TAPE IT BEFORE YOU TOSS IT!!!!

    reference website

Here is how Designs By King says to do it:

    Taping instructions:

    The ends of the rifle:

Wrap two to three inches into the rifle from the end, then overlapping in the reverse direction back to the end.

    The neck of the rifle:

You will need to wrap four to five inches and then overlapping two to three times, each time going in the reverse direction.

    Under the bolt:

Take off the bolt and wrap from the middle of the bolt area toward the tip of the rifle, and tape 3 inches past the bolt area. Now reverse the tape back to where you started in the center of the bolt area.

All rifles will eventually crack at the bolt slot heading toward the tip of the rifle, but the strapping tape will stop the crack from continuing. This can make a rifle last for years.

Or buy on of the new "un-breakable" rifles

  4. Hi All,

I really want to buy a rifle. Although I was in the hornline, I can do drop spins and tosses with a rifle. I decided I want to buy one. Can anyone recommend an online shop and the type of rifle? I want something good, but not too expensive. I also see size selections and I'm not sure what size to get. I'm 6 feet tall - assuming it's height related.

Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks.

Most catalogs carry them or you can buy on-line at some companies I use Algy

  5. I got really lucky in the sewing department. I have a sewing mom who actually enjoys making flag silks. The funny thing is that her kids graduated four years ago and yet she continues to sew for us free of charge. She also has a real knack for color and design and offers many valuable suggestions as part of the design process. We are able to cover all of our silks for under $200 a season.

What's her name, phone number, e-mail address and city of birth please? LOL

  6. I think what I am trying to say is the high cost of running a guard is not just due to inflation but due in part to our own expectations. National Guard Armories are much cheaper than a high school gym. Paying $40 - $65 for a single flag silk and $125 for a single costume is outrageous. We have so many talented designers and technicians in all parts of the country. Why is it now required to fly in staff from all over the country?

I know that guards have always folded due to financial strains....and that they will continue to do so. What I am suggesting will not solve this but could ease the pain a bit.

Where I am locally I have seen a lot of the flying in minimized and the utilization of local staff be more the norm. As fas as costumes go $125.00 is an awesome price. I look at it like this 12 shows a season (give or take) Divided by $125.00 equals only $10.42 everytime they wear them! Flags now... they are an issue. I'd like to know who told all those moms that can sew flags they should charge for it!!! LOL

I agree with so much you are saying I have just had to find a way to make it all work in my head and a way to justify to parents.

  7. Everybody needs to take a deep breath... World guards and Open guards (back in the day) Have been folding due to finances since colorguard started. It is truley sad when it happens but it also allows for room at the top. I for one can name about a dozen or more that sited money as at least part of the reason they decided to fold or take a season off. Please keep in mind a World class program is completely life consuming especially during the months of Dec-April and the staff gets burnt out and needs a break. I do agree that cost are getting out of control, but some are fixed, buses hotel rooms, and the worst is practice facilities. Ask any World class directer how stressful practice site budgets are. Floors and flags barely scratch the surface of the budget in relation to practice sites.

With that being said, I miss so many colorguards that have gone away. I try to do my part sponsor a kid for part of their dues. Donate to my local programs when I can. We all just need to help support our favorites and help ease the burden they feel. World Class dues can not be $500.00 dollars anymore like when some of us marched, just like all the other prices that have more than doubled since 20 years ago.

  8. No the Knights is UCF. I had also heard that USF is folding as well. and as to Michael shapiro going to england I heard that he will tech there but not live there. He is moving to Tampa Florida but Im not sure what he will be doing here.

    I heard Tarpon Springs

  9. Funny how people are claiming to have spun these.

At Dayton they only had an unfinished prototype available and wouldn't let anyone spin it because it wouldn't be the same as the finished product.

The rep was really upset that she couldn't answer all the questions people asked and didn't have a finalized version for people to check out.

Do you think that they have had no one spin these before producing them? There are a small handful floating around some are early prototypes and some are more recent.

  10. Okay, I'll say it.

A lot of the hype is simply because they're from Japan. I mean seriously, if that same group, show and performance were from Ankeny Iowa, would that have medaled? The WGI community has been fauning over them for a long time going back to when they were the first international guard to make the "I" in WGI mean more than Canada, comprised of cute little Japanese girls (who were actually 25 years old, hence the world class age rules). We are just so anxious to hand out our first international gold medal that we can't see what is happening... Lots and lot of hype.

Fact is, if you remove the plethora of baton tricks from that program, what is there?? Although the main baton twirler is fantastic, and has a great cast of twirlers surrounding him, is this really what the activity is to become....a baton fest? God I hope not, or I'll find better things to do with my weekends.

In the past I have been very fond of their shows because of their entertainment value and how well they worked as guard shows, with or without batons. This one?....meh. Lots of hype about what was a very good performance and a very decent show, but hardly medal worthy IMO.

Oh, and I agree with the ensemble judge who had them in 8th by the way.

    HTTB

Although I loved their show I do have issues with the amount of breaks and drops they had on baton, rifle and sabre, Corona also had too many drops. I do not believe it is the right message to send. For all those who will say drops are not everything I agree but they are something.

  11. I think the floor should add to the show not take away from it. Some of these floors are so busy you can't see what the performers are doing. Aimachi had a nice floor but on Fan Network you couldnt tell the performers from the floor, it was a big blur. Corona's floor was a little busy as well. There were some great moments in their show that would have been more effective if they could have been seen more clearly. (Maybe it is different live)

I think guards should get back to simpler designs or solid floors. Last year, Fantasia's black floor and white uniforms was so simple yet elegant.

This season, Avon kept it simple and your focus was on the performer's as it should be. However Choctwahatchee's floor while not simple, added something to their performance.....

but this is all just my opinion.

I do not agree, the texture on texture is taking us to a new place in design, Aimachi is a great example of the use of multible textures. I was there live and I never had a hard time seeing them and I would hate for a designer to alter their design choices based on how it will look on the Fan Network. I think there were a few groups that explored mutilble textures sucsessfully. I think our eyes are accustomed to a more simplistic look and it will take time for us to get used to this use of pattern on pattern. I say be smart about it and go for it. The more diversity we have in design choices the more interesting it is for the audience.

  12. At a recent regional I sat and listened to a designer who has had teams do well and not do so well in the A class. After his expanation of "being tired of it" he said so this year "I sold out" and look at us we will most likley be in the top of the class. He went on to say that he will continue to not challenge himself creatively and will continue to give them what they want a pretty ballad with soft smiles. His kids are not frustrated. It's amazing what you hear in line for the concession stand.

  13. Have they always done that? That's a very lame idea to start with because now the winner from the first round will get into finals where someone in 8th place of the third round deserved that spot. ridiculous.

I think the top 15 highest scores will still be the finalists. This just effects performance order in prelims I do not think they will take fianlists based on rounds. Performance order can be a factor but if the judges are on their game they will get the right 15 in finals then adjust as needed in finals.

  14. There's already a handful that want to stab me in the face, but it's okay. . .we all know that those who yell loudest in critique get what they want! ;-) 'How very dare you not understand my vision' 'I can't believe you have the audacity to question my artistic thought process' and lastly, throw in a dash of intimidation with a stare down. . .it'll instantly add 5 points to your score the next time they judge you! I should write a winterguard for dummies book! :-)

    Marry me?

  15. Seems to be the question of the season, so many instructors I have spoken with are pondering the same questions. WE are encouraged to "do something different" and "get out of your comfort zone" but yet when you look at the projected top 15 for nationals quite a few of them are right in there with the what is the "normal" A route.

Most of the instructors I know who tried to get "out of their comfort zone" are experiencing very frustrating seasons and at this point are planning to go right back to safe route next season, which can only mean more similarities between A guards next year.

I think it will take a few "different" A guards to make finals and a couple to get medals for instructors to feel comfortable taking what they consider to be a risk next year. I am not confident this will happen in 2009 so look for even more similar shows in 2010.

  16. Ok I get it in World class we want to see new, fresh and different. We want to see groups do tricks we haven't seen. However, there have been a few colorguards that have attempted this and IMO failed. When you have a line of 8 attempt and 3 achieve by any standards that is a F. Where does the line get drawn? When I see that moment happen in a world class show it just reminds me of when we used to get together in someones back yard and go "look what I can do" and none of us could do it but maybe once.

World class needs to push the boundries of technique and training also.

  17. 1. Avon

    2. Logan

    3. Flanagan

    4. Carmel

    5. Miamisburg

    6. Arcadia

    7. Warren Central

    8. Rancho Bernardo

    9. Choctaw

    10. Cheshire

    11. Centerville

    12. Center Grove

    13. Trumbull

    14. Seminole

    15. Americas

Avon will win the maturity on both equipment and movement is standard setting for high school. I agree mostly with this prediction I'd love to see Carmel medal just to shake things up. Seminole, Americas, and Riverbanks will fight it out for the last couple of spots. It will have a lot to do with the show of the day for the last few spots and prelims performance order sadly.

  18. One of the board members in our circuit has a daughter that competes in figure skating. We talked this weekend about how much more clear things would be if we had "compulsories" like they do......certain skills you MUST display at each level, and also deductions if you go over the skill level you are supposed to be competing at.

Even when artistry is being rewarded, it keeps people more focused on good training and being thorough with technique instead of pushing kids to do more difficult skills without having the muscular control and development needed.

Now, that said, I'd hate to be the one trying to decide what skills fit at each level......

I think compulsories in the A class especially are a great idea. Then when a group has the money to bring in a high priced, experienced designer it is still on the kids to achieve certain skills. Compulsory skills are a part of almost every subjective judging activity, gymnastics, fiqure skating, baton twirling to name a few. This thread should be fun to watch!!
