  1. This thread has morphed, but in a good way.

    ...

Intelligent discussion is great, thanks for the opportunity.

Exactly why I stepped down on my original purpose of discussion, since what you guys started talking about is way more intelligent than my "vengeance fact checking"

  2. I have seen some questionable visual designs creeping up into some of the upper-echelon corps this year...It seems like readability is sacrificed a lot for velocity; and frankly some of the forms resemble mass clumps rather than designs and progressions. (It is also the reason why the very top corps stay on the top...they KNOW this and are careful to open up their blocks and forms to read). It was painfully displayed at Madison last night; especially when you had block progressions and layering of lines/arcs.

Actually, the arrangements seem to be improving a bit. More development and line rather than rhythmic impacts and 'bleeps and bloops' that invaded a lot of the writing a bit back. Hope that continues...

It's June... it takes time to clean that high velocity stuff.

  3. Poor Dylan just joined the forums today.

    Take it easy on him.

He might just be asking questions he needs answers to,....or not.

    I agree,

Answer his question, we can give him corps history later

And to be fair, I wasn't really aware that the Blue Stars even existed until 2002, and didn't know their part in drum corps history until 2004 or so... (started marching in 01).

that aside, Dylan, as I said before, don't worry, just march, you'll have fun

  4. Should this even be a concern for me, or should I just try out this winter where I want to be, and not even worry about anything else?

I say you shouldn't even worry about it... despite people going to different corps, we are a fairly small community, and friends will stay friends for the most part. You may not march next to your friend every single day the next summer... but you'll keep in touch (i'd hope) and have interaction with them at shows (which is a cool experience in itself)

Also, if you make friends that are older than you, you'll have to deal with losing them when they age out anyway

  5. Nobody here really has any hard data pertaining to any of these questions. It's all conjecture, guess-work, speculation and personal bias (i.e. DCP business as usual). But when someone says "hey, look 20 corps have an additional 10-15 members! Isn't that great!" , it's clear that they are not looking at the full picture.

I Think I personally am looking at more factors than most (though individual posts of mine don't necessarily cover all of them), also find it funny that everyone has ignored my post in which i stated that "It seems most people are ignoring this aspect..."

  6. Marion Harding H.S.---Marion, Ohio...US Open...bad parking, no place for the corps to warm up...bleachers were yucky, but it was flat out awesome

    Crew Stadium-Columbus, Ohio

Canton Ohio-pro football hall of fame stadium

and gotta put in Madison and Allentown...I actually liked the RCA dome, too...nice and cool

I totally forgot about the Crew Stadium! GORGEOUS turf. More perfect than artificial turf... Mmmm...

  7. Privacy issues are also part of why one corps can not just give it's auditionee information to another without prior consent, IMO. If that sort of thing is desired...a "pool" of auditionees corps may contact when they have openings, it should be planned for the upcoming audition season, with the ability to NOT be part of that pool if the person so chooses. The application for a corps should have either an "inclusion" or an "exclusion" option.

Maybe have a list of corps on their audition forms, with a checkbox next to each: "If you don't make the corps, what other corps would you like to learn more about." Member doesn't make it, their contact info is sent on to all the corps checked on his/her sheet.

Then again, some might view it as some sort of test, and think that they will hav ea better chance at making their first choice if they say it's the only corps they would ever even think of marching...

And then, back to square one of this issue

  8. That method would be much less valid, since we'd have to trust that the people responding are who they say they are, and not allow for repeats.

We're much more likely to get what we want in printed, addressed form. Obviously, the pefect deal would be for the corps to give us the contact information so we could contact the kdis directly. Privacy concerns prevent that from happening.

If you have an online survey where users register with their name, address, etc. it would be fairly easy to determine if people were jsut making things up... especially if a list of those people were compiled with all that information by the corps to cross reference.

I'm not talking about a DCP poll here... I take online surveys for my university all the time. Maybe not AS accurate, but a lot cheaper than snail mail surveys.

I'm just trying to help! Despite my semi-sarcastic response to your initial idea...

  9. Are you somehow saying that those corps are inactive due to the 150 rule?

Certainly seems like that is what people are implying.

Imagine just for a second, that the answer is that NO, those corps went inactive for reasons that are not the 150 rule...

Where will the members go who had planned on marching the corps that went inactive go? If they really do want to stay in the activity, chances are... to another corps (factor in some arbitrary percentage of ageouts, those who were going to another corps anyway, would have stopped marching for their own reasons anyway, etc...). 20 corps in "World Class" with 15 more available spots more than makes up the number of members from those inactive corps, anyway.

I still strongly believe that this rule change is just another scapegoat for the real problem of lack of interest in the activity (to be a marching member). It has more to do with the rest of the world and society than anything that can be done within the activity, imo.

  10. How to get the answer:

    1) Make a survey, asking the cut kid if s/he auditioned elsewhere, why s/he might not be marching, etc.

    2) Make a packet, with SASE in packet so kid sends survey back to you

    3) Mail packet to every Top X corps, and ask them to mail the survey to 100 of their cut kids (postage paid)

If you're really nice, in your letter to the corps, ask them to send it to their last 100 cuts. We're trying to target the kids who made it through the first round, if possible. You want to make it as easy as possible on the corps admin staff...they should be able to go to their recruit database, limit it to 2008, and sort it on DateCut, and print 100 labels. Then place it on your packet and mail it out....take less than 30 minutes.

This will cost you $0.84 per packet (corps mails to kid, kid mails to you) + package of 100 surveys to each corps, maybe $10 ea. So it might cost $600 to send to last year's top 6.

    But you'd get your answer.

That wouldn't be any fun though, since gross speculation is what DCP is all about!

Or there's this fancy thing called the internet, that would be practically free to set up an online survey/database and distribute to the corps...

  11. A point I was trying ot make on the other thread that's about this exact same topic (why two? *shrug*)...

We're all looking at it (so it seems) in a way that sees anything less than 150 members as a loss, or shame, or whatever...

If all these lower corps have 135, or close to 135, members this year, they're doing just as well (or better?) than last year. Even 138 (soemone said that's how many Madison has?) is 3 more people in the activity who may not have marched otherwise.

  12. Just a thought...

Even if a lower-tier corps had 135 (which would have been a full line last year), we would be considering them to not be full this year...

The corps health could be just as good as before, but the statistics make it seem otherwise (resisting lame RPG analogy...)

I'm not saying that all these corps DO have 135, but if they do, or pretty close to it, I think we shouldn't be worried about this quite so much...

  13. Alright, I'll give this a shot...

The 'bottom corps' have always had less members than the top corps, generally speaking. Before this year, have ALL Div 1 corps been fielding 135 members? Before the limit was changed to 135, were ALL Div 1 corps fielding 128?

We're seeing the same effect in the lower corps, and simply labeling it with another cause. If the hundreds of potential members who don't make the auditions at top corps decide not to go anywhere else, whose fault is that? If they were given more information "Hey, though you've been cut, you should try out for... " Maybe corps should have joint auditions, etc... Ok I'm getting off track.

Whatever everyone is seeing this problem as, it isn't being caused by the member increase. And, if corps CAN take 150 members down the road with the same number of buses, then it make economical sense as well.

    just imo obviously...

  14. Actually, most tour busses these days have 54 seats. There is plenty of room for all 150 members, plus alternates.

Room for 54 actual people, perhaps... Room for 154 people's stuff for tour in the bays? Hmm...

Has anyone heard how this is working out for the corps?
