  1. Back from the show -- I'll post a full review tomorrow.

But, I have to agree that this was one of the absolute worst show experiences I have ever had! The fact that they added an extra half hour to the intermission and I still couldn't get out of my seat to go to the restroom or get a drink was absurd -- absolutely no show support at all. People standing in the aisles blocking traffic up and down, with abosolutely no one keeping the crowds moving. Don't plan on returning next year.

As for the show, I thought BD seemed ragged tonight -- musically and (surprisingly) visually -- not what I expected from an undefeated BD this late in the season. Crown was hot -- but please drop the attmpted cutesy little bow and squat from the corps proper at the end of the Hungarian Rhapsody bit -- just a bit over the top for my taste. Really liked BK and feel like they simply aren't getting proper credit for what they're achieving, had them well above G-Men tonight.

I'll post more tomorrow, but I have to say that the biggest disappointment of the night for me (a Cadets fan to the nth degree over the years) was the show that I saw from the Cadets tonight. It was truly a painful experience.

Look forward to your review tomorrow. I expect BD will pull together an inspired performance tomorrow (Friday) in Allentown and next week as they play their hearts out for their BD brother who was hospitalized just yesterday.

  2. Without competition/scoring...then wouldn't drum corp evolve into pure entertainment. For example...NBA basketball vs Harlem Globetrotters. Or...World Class Ice Skating vs. Disney on Ice???? I like it all, but it's different. Yeah, with competition comes all the "stuff". Can you imagine what all these threads would be like without scoring in DCI? What would we all talk about :lol::thumbup:

  3. Understand what exactly? The majority of posts in other threads about the Blue Devils' show have labeled it as fun, enjoyable, and a fresh new direction for Blue Devils. I honesly haven't seen many people try to label it as "something NO ONE has ever done before," though as long as they were referring to the DCI-level, they would have been correct. You seem to be trying to disprove something that no one else is really trying to prove to begin with. All you're really doing is betraying an extreme bias against anything the Blue Devils are doing.

Frankly, most things corps do these days are direct rip-offs of something SOMEONE else has done before. And that's understandable; most of the instructors, techs, and show designers work with organizations that participate in WGI and BOA and other circuits where the restrictions on instrumentation and programming have been lax for far longer than in DCI. Thus, they got a chance to use these ideas in other venues first to see what they liked/disliked about them, then took them to the DCI-level.

However, I don't watch BOA or WGI. I have no child who participates in those activities and thus no immediate draw to them. So when I see what the Blue Devils are doing, it's new to me. It doesn't matter if its been done before by someone else. Unless the Blue Devils are trying to portray themselves as the only ones who have ever done this, why is it so vital that everyone know everyone else who did it before them??

  4. Need to wake up the crowd?

    Send in VK.

VK is a crowd pleaser. We were at a few of the shows where VK performed and they really did get the audience going throughout their whole performance. Very entertaining, even without the alcohol. Though, actually, wouldn't mind alcohol at the shows.

  5. Fan and Family:

Our daughter marched her first three years (2002, 2003, 2004) on soprano and her 4th year (2005) on baritone in Mandarins. She then moved over to SCV A Corps on baritone in 2006, and her last two years are with Blue Devils (2007, 2008) on baritone.

I was hooked from the first rehearsal I ever saw, and think I'm going to have more withdrawals than she will after she ages out in August. It's been a great ride, and I'd love to stay involved in the future, perhaps as a volunteer with any of the corps. Drum corps is THE best activity there is!

Fan and proud mom. My son currently plays baritone with the Blue Devils also. We agree that drum corps is a great activity. I'm becoming addicted to these websites, yikes!
