  1. WHAT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! No comment on the shirts, Not even an insult or two???? You slowin' down or what??? :satisfied:

"Something to do with fireman? Hoser, 1st names rhymes with, Poser the Hoser!" Barkin' up the wrong tree - fire"man" _____ - first name. Try again. Opposite of "old" - Last name. These should solve this one rather quickly.

Shot in the dark, Manny Young?

  2. Haha, we were much more sophisticated--we had a pulley system with belts, the subject's belt was removed and re-looped from front to back but only through to the side loops--two more belts were attached, one one either side and these two were fastened as to close the loop around the person's waist and then in turn was looped around the door handle--the old school bus handle lever system for the driver. When the subject moved forward the door would open automatically--because he was harnessed to it--and off ya' want. One door folds out and the other in and you in the middle. Kept you on the bus and your whizzlings outside! Problem was sometimes going 65 miles an hour, you'd get an updraft and a shower would rain through the windows along the right side of the bus. I'm still trying to decide if that was funny.....

Dang, by the time it took to get ready, I would have pee'd myself.

I have seen or tried most every method mentioned here, except for the hole in the floor, sorry HairBear. :lle: Although I have seen something similar as a truck driver. Guy had a funnel, hose and hole in the floor, never stopped when he trucked. :lle:

I agree with most, sure there were negative situations BITD, but I won't trade it for the world! :lle:

  3. First off, the "time commitment and expense of participation" in corps like Blue Saints and the all-age corps are no more now than they were 20-30 years ago (obviously adjusting the $$$ for inflataion). So, that excuse does not fly.

Second, explain to me how "DCI drum corps" forced circuits like Garden State, Eastern Mass, CYO, etc. to fold? As far as I know (and I lived with a member Director for many years), all of these are separate organizations that controlled their own destiny. DCI did not have any regulatory power over these other circuits. Yet, virtually all of them folded due to lack of members. So, how is that different than my argument above?

I have an answer for you. DCI controls where the member corps (top 12) go on tour. The American International Open in Butler was boycotted by DCI, ticket sales dropped when the big guys stopped coming, show folds.

  4. The thing about the "good ole' days" was the abundance of participation opportunities at all levels of the activty, from the crappiest little rinky-dink corps to the National contenders, and everything in-between.

Now it's a very elite deal, for a very select bunch of kids.

Who cares if your french horn sucked ... At least you had the opportunity to learn how to play it.

I get a kick from watching the 1973 video on Santa Clara where Gail Royer says, "You don't have to know how to play an instrument, we'll teach you."

Can you imagine someone showing up in Concord Ca. wanting to join the Blue Devils with absolutley no experience?

  5. Thanks! One of the few early Empire pics I've seen.

A question, tho...I marched 87...I don't recall the small podium for the guard in this segment, and I lost my video long ago. You mentioned this being done in 86 (which I was unaware of, being overseas on TDY and marching Dagenham at the time)...is THIS pic from 86 rather than 87??

Another reason this may not be 87 if it is a pic from finals....everyone's pants are still white!!!! My GOD, Allentown's field turned into a mudhole that day!

And there's our sop section leader and soloist "Crash" in the background!

    Edit: I just realized why you said 86....because I said 86! I meant 87.

IT's definitely from the 1987 program, however, it's probally a pic taken in 1986.

  6. Awright!!! So I made a mistake...! I'm sorry.

The last one on the right is NOT Shemp. It's Nanci!!

Aw, come on now Andyroo, everyone knows that by this time, Joe Besser was the guy on the far right. Shemp & NanciD were long out of the scene.

  7. OK Sam, the gloves are off, flyboy.

1st, shouldn't the order have been USA, USMC, USN and then the lowly USAF?

I recall the '86 Empire show well. I was the guy trying at every show to "take back" that USMC dress blue top. The "jarhead" who donated it was a flunk out at the USN School of Music, he was there in '81 when I was.

On a serious note, here's my reason for trying to get the USMC top. There a rich history on exactly who gets the chance to wear a United States Marine Corps dress unifrom. It's not just a piece of clothing, exactly the same reason the US flag is not a piece of cloth, it's a symbol of something that has deep meaning.

I would have rather the Statesmen make a phony uniform. I appreciate the respect they weere giving the armed services.

Sam, you know why there is a U. S. Air Force?

To keep all the scumbags out of the Marines.

    Here's a pic:

I must admit that she does make the uniform look better than most! :worthy:

  8. Wow, they were pretty big. It's amazing, that a small town like Butler could field CD of A, GBV, Meridian Woodpeckers (all girl fife corps, gotta love the name) and a host of drum and baton groups who were at the top of that game like the East Butler Sparks. I mean that's a lot of kids involved for what was then a small county seat.

    Cool pics lindap!

I just got back from the Butler High School Alumni Band. It amazes me how many old time corps people are still around. Of course the Band Director is Andrew Yaracs and his sister Barb is asst. Director. He was the Vagabonds director and she was a DM. Our other DM from those days was there working security, he's a retired state cop. The ony two there from my graduating class, me included, are coprs alumni. Me with the Vagabonds and Laura who marched both CD of A and Woodpeckers. I saw in the stands at least three Vagabond alum who have kids in the marching band. Two of the band parents are corps alumni also. Small world.
