  1. Troop is some seriously tragic visual instruction away from scaring people.

Too bad it only counts if you can move. They'd win the parking lot battle any day of the week in their neighborhood.

Right as soon as they move anything 8 to 5 or larger they lose a lot of sound quality. And maybe because I can't see a defined technique... But #### they do sound great at a standstill.

  2. Everything is weird because scores were way different from show to show. But it's gonna keep the judges on their toes tonight. As long as they don't #### up numbers management too much we should get a true ranking (but I have no hope numbers management when they can't figure it out at a show with 6 corps)

  3. I tried the feed out on my phone through AirPlay and my MacBook Pro through HDMI to my tv. Both had great picture. Sound is a little more consistent through the HDMI so I went with that. Only one hiccup in Spirits show. But it was quickly fixed. Since then nearly flawless. Also using Ethernet directly to my modem as wifi is very crowded in my apartment complex and messes with my stream sometimes.

  4. Spartacus may have been a "mess" at this point in the season but there was no doubt that the masses loved it. Everyone was just holding their breath hoping they could clean it enough to win. Apples and Oranges between 08 and this year.

Yeah I guess it was liked. I just remember my first read of the show in SA in 08... And I was like WTF was that? It had no flow... Transitions needed to be worked out big time.. And they still had to rewrite a bunch of drill if I remember correctly.
  5. This lineup is awesome though. Judges must be having a hell of a time. I mean it's their own #### faults for not being on the same page at all this year. I'm especially interested in the four GE judges.......

But the lineup is awesome. Looks like it kinda forced everyone to come in early too. A lot of great shows missed if you stay in the lot too long.

  6. I LOVED BAC last year.... But the show wasn't even close to achievable. I think they might have gone a little too far in the opposite direction, but at least thy are set up to achieve a lot more of their show. Now what they did end up achieving last year I thought they should have gotten a little more credit, but I guess it wasn't enough achievement for points. Loved the G7 knocks in the show, too. Haha

  7. The Crossmen show after the ballad is BLAH. I'm also not a big fan of the brass book. A lot of demand... For little effect. Opening impact and Ballad is good stuff... Everything else is "chop and bop". I'm okay with everything before the ballad really. There is just nothing notable from a brass perspective after that. At least nothing memorable. At least get me with a real ending... Which I would think is coming at some point.

  8. I must be an anomaly. I've had pretty decent sound on both feeds. Yeah the shadow was terrible at Belton but not much you can do about that. See Bloomington 08.

I wish the sound was at the same level though, as I switch between feeds it varies quite a bit... And it's getting late at night.. I like to listen loud... I know my neighbors aren't fond of that.

There has been s bit of crackle on the Belton feed though.

  9. As for risk. It is a lot lower risk of injury than football, basketball or hockey I'd say. All three with varying levels of contact... but a lot of risk of serious injury, including concussions.

The percentage of MMs who get a concussion from stray guard equipment or horns in wrong places or whatever else can happen on the field I would bet is a lot lower than the risk of concussion from the three sports listed above. Now risk for lower body injuries might be a little more comparable... but I would compare injuries in drum corps closer to injuries a runner would get. Maybe a little more risk than a runner with the often awkward things we ask our bodies to do while marching and dancing on a football field.

  10. Is being trumpet alternate number 2 or 3 worth when you could be PERFORMING in another corps in need of members? Is it worth it being drug along at camps for the top corps while they suck your money out just to be cut a month or so before tour.. then you don't have the money... or will power to go audition somewhere else?

Sorry at risk for going off topic...

I do know that most corps if not all world class have some type of medical staff or physical trainer on tour for most if not all of tour. This activity is not easy on even the most in shape body. The weight room is not gonna help you build all the right muscles for this activity. Being in good physical shape is a huge plus... but I've seem some very in shape people go off the field with a pulled groin, messed up knee or ankle. Low brass players with messed up backs... hell I've seen people hurt themselves pushing themselves in breathing exercises. Having someone with medical and first aid knowledge is a must. And knowing when to rest or when to stay out on the field is not often a decision that should be left with the MM or the instructional staff who most really have no clue how serious something might be. It is tough to tell which pain is just from tired muscles, and which is an actual injury. Someone with more know how needs to be around to help differentiate.

If corps do not have someone like this on tour.. they are putting their members at unnecessary risk.

All that said... injuries do happen. And alternates are great to have. Even the bottom groups prefer to have a few people ready to jump in if possible. And even the top corps run into spots where they have to put out calls midseason to fill a hole. Drum corps is very athletic... and very tough on bodies. Injuries are bound to happen. It is a corps admin and staff job to work together to minimize the possibility of injuries. And having someone with the proper training and background on tour guiding the corps is the best way to go.
