I think the reason that there aren't as many Corps anymore and aren't as many people at shows anymore is because while DCI does good advertising to people that are already going to go to a show, it never really reaches out.
Take high school marching band, for instance. Everyone in my high school marching band knows what drum corps is. Practically none of them will try out for one because they don't think they're "good enough." They think every corps is a Phantom Regiment or a Blue Devils, when I'm sure most of them could make and learn from a DCA Corps, or even a DCI Open Corps, and a few of them could even thrive in World Class. Or they think that they're too far away (though, in reality, there are 3 Corps that have practices within reasonable driving distance of central Florida). They don't go to shows because they don't know when or where there will be one. They don't buy any merch because they don't know where to buy it, or much about the individual corps. About half of them go to see the Quarterfinals broadcast in theaters every year, but very few actually really follow the activity.
I think if DCI tried to make an advertising campaign that makes Drum Corps seem more inclusive, instead of extremely exclusive, numbers would skyrocket, and maybe even some new Corps and new shows would pop up. They should advertise more at high school marching band competitions. Give out schedules, recommend where kids could try out. Stuff like that.

Regiment 2008 is definitely at the top of my list... so is Star 93, Madison 95, Cadets 08 (yeah, you heard me), Cavaliers 06, SCV 07, 89 SCV, 2003 Cadets, 2003 Regiment, and 2008 Colts.

I don't understand. How can a well supplied corps receive $25,000, and a chance to win $1 million, while corps such as Capital Regiment are forced to fold because of money? How can this be? CR folded and it has a hurt countless people.
Because this was based on voting, and in addition to being more popular than Capital Regiment, Crown advertised the crap out of the Chase Community Giving on their website, DCP, facebook, and various other drum corps mediums. They really worked for that money. I don't think I saw a single post by anyone from Capital Regiment asking for people to vote for them.
That being said, I have nothing against Capital Regiment.

It also mentioned that he had put together a marching band in years past, but he wanted more potential students with schedules that would be worked with by the administration. He did not get that, so he was unable to make a marching band, which is actually understandable.
At my school, we have a separate period for marching band during the day, and practices 3 times a week. If even one or two people missed the practices, that's hours of time wasted. I can't imagine what would happen if there was no class and a lot of students that don't have schedules the administration was willing to work with.

One can draw 2 columns from 1999-2009 :
On one column list the DCI Titlist for that year ( over all others)
On the column beside that Corps cite if they were the national fan favorite that year (over all others )
What that research will demonstrate pretty conclusively is that more oftentimes than not, the Titlist is NOT the audience favorite that year. As a matter of fact, it is rare where the Titleist is also the audience favorite. This is because the judges really don't care a wit about the audience reaction to the show. It is how THEY react to the performance, no one else. And the judging captions ( particularly the General Effect capions ) make no provisions for audience receptivity one way or the other with the performance.
So? A judge doesn't judge what show is the most entertaining, they judge what show is the most excellently performed.

In addition to that, he used that drumline to build Gold Drum and Bugle Corps, the open class DCI Corps, and it may die without those members.

They offer gigs to members of both the winterline and marching band in order to recieve credits towards their member fees. I believe this particular gig included some from both and the company even hired some "drummers" from outside of RCC.
I didn't see the episode, but it must've been a huge line.

Was it RCC the WGI Line, or RCC's Marching Band's Line? Both are phenomenal, but one is a lot different than the other.

And now with Forte being based in Texas, one has to wonder how the camps are going to be with two potentially great OC corps close to each other (kinda). Good Luck to both though, I know people afiliated and marchiing with both.
Texas is a big state. A very big state. The different would be multiple states apart if it were the North.

SCV 89 without any doubt in the world.

My two favorite shows from the 90s weren't championship shows... Star 93 and Madison 95, so I picked my third favorite, Star 91.

Sun Devils didn't tour, but on our 2 day bus drive to Rochester from South Florida, the bathroom was open for everyone, so long as you only did #1. The Valdosta and Orlando shows however, were very easy to just wait.

Very well-written article. I hope it makes an impact.

I think the music from West Side Story could possibly work on a football field.
You don't say...

All of the crazy jazz running over the past 10 years.

So here's a high school in Texas sending kids off to march Troopers, SCV, Phantom and Revolution. One high school. At least four different corps. I wonder is there another high school (not college) which counts so many corps among its students?
HH
A local high school in 07 had at least three members marching different Corps; Teal, Cavaliers, and Cascades. In 09 all three of them marched Cavaliers, but they're in college now.
Stuff like this isn't rare in Florida and Texas, really. Most larger high schools have at least one or two marching Corps... my school had 3 in 09, and all of the local schools had at least one (I believe).

I'm going to be one of those people I hate on here and not read the thread and comment.
Just unplug. It will kill a whole flock of birds with one stone. BOOM. (Or no more annoying BOOM)
I see both sides, honestly. I marched DCA, which is completely unplugged, and it sounds great! The pit is definitely loud enough without amps, and it doesn't hinder technique. But, I also have been to a lot of DCI shows, and I've never really thought that a pit sounds "too loud" (though I have thought that there are a lot of shows that feature the pit too much to do some random marching maneuver). I think DCA uses unamplified pits well, and I think DCI pre-2003 (or maybe it was 2004, I don't remember) used them well, too. I also think that DCI uses amplified pits very well. As well as amplified voice (when it's used tastefully), and even synths.
That being said, I don't understand why EVERY Corps finds a need to use amps in their pit, or a synth, or amplified voice, or whatever. Hell, I don't understand why at least one DCI corps doesn't TRY to use a G hornline. DCA allows Bb, but there's still a lot of G hornlines that sound great. I think that being progressive is one thing, but being progressive simply for the sake of it is a waste.
Besides, wouldn't it be more progressive for corps to come out with a line of Kanstul G's?
Bottom line, I want to hear good music and see good marching. When I'm at a drum corps show, I see that, so I'm pretty content.

I think a timpanist can do a lot more with harmonies to the horns and fit with chords better than a fixed pitch synth.

Converse Chuck Taylors. Kidding! But they're the shoes I've always used in marching band/DCA. Probably not a good idea for a touring DCI Corps.
-
Phantom Regiment 2008. Without a doubt.

This was so tough between BAC 2000 and SVC 2009... but I ultimately chose Boston. SCV 2007 gets an honorable mention.
