  1. It should be known that 2006 was the program design of Marc Sylvester, with input from Hopkins.
  2. That's actually a good point, because the high school band program I came from didn't exactly use some of the innovations that the BOA bands use (electronics being the biggest). So, since my exposure from drum corps, I am now able to use that tool in my psyche when designing and writing shows now. If that were not in drum corps when I marched, I would have had a more difficult time adjusting to it.
  3. For the record, I did not downvote him (despite my disagreement in my response to his post)!!
  4. Yeah, that's true, but it's a classic vehicle for a story line (Romeo/Juliet, Jets/Sharks, etc). It's not going away any time soon, either! Sure, other bands/indoor groups have done some things, but this is your chance to see it done with drum corps-like precision that you just don't get with those other groups (except maybe indoor groups). So enjoy the good pageantry!
  5. This is a year that the Cadets are getting some much deserved love from the DCP crowd. However, it seems that every thread that deals with them has something great to say, but is shadowed by "as much as I hate to admit it..." or "like it or not...". This brings back the memories of the Cadets being the corps people love to hate. I think it's time to step beyond that for some. For those that hated the talking, the singing, the door (the second time around), it's gone now. I think we'd all agree that we're seeing some classic Cadets this year and it's okay to like it For those with opinions about George Hopkins, what has he done lately? I'll let you decide. FHNSAB edit: for spelling
  6. and then SCV is creeping up too. this is such an exciting year! although, even though they are creeping up, it may not be enough to get top 4, but who knows? and then there's madison
  7. I think it's an interesting thing to notice (or argue) that storytelling is best done when the entire corps is doing it, not just characters. I'm thinking about the difference between PR 2010, where at some point, everyone participates in this Sparticus business, vs. Cadets 2006 with the four characters. Cavies 2006 and Cadets 2010 are other good examples, though I guess Cadets 2010 was "a little less successful". Anyone for or against?
  8. Whoa... now you have my attention. What are you talking about? Sounds juicy
  9. That's what I mean! So, it is possible for ZERO open class corps to make it, just from sheer numbers! So, in a way, i am worried. I would hope that the open class wouldn't get the WRONG kind of exposure...
  10. Frankly, I am confused by this... because how is it possible? I can't help but think that the scoring must be completely different between the two classes --- mainly because one class is weekends only, so how could they even compare to world class? Sure, the best open class corps could beat out the "worst" world class, but I only see it happening in extreme situations... and I don't see the open class corps beating too many world class, which makes me wonder if this whole combining semis is a good idea or not. I was thinking about it earlier, glad you posted, thanks.
  11. One classic pet peeve that goes outside of drum corps is the difference between a drummer and a percussionist. Drummers play DRUMS. Percussionists play more than just drums. Usually there is a personality/stereotype that goes with each.
  12. Well, now is your chance to let it all out! Breathe! Booos frabaaaa....
  13. whatever you do, just don't pronounce the P!
  14. Corps is french, it means body. In a way, drum corps can mean body of sound/drums/etc, or one cohesive body (read: force) that acts together. Maybe two drum corps could be corpses... but that just sounds like dead bodies!
  15. My peeve is when people call it band, but I find it funny that we always come to the "rescue" of drum corps by defending it and finding the need to explain the differences!
  16. and by "no-name judge" i mean "a new judge that hasn't yet been schooled in politics"
  17. Was that my gaff from another thread less than an hour ago? I think I said Blue Star's... i meant Blue Stars' ha! look at me go! I'll go edit it!
