  1. I'm still not getting into their program yet either and feel disappointed. Maybe because of only high-box views from the Fan Network? Either way IMO Crown & Cadets are a point better than BD right now (I'd even throw Bluecoats ahead as well), maybe that will change. I just don't think they are playing the horn at the level that Crown is. For example, their one technical passage at the end of the trumpet feature before low brass enter for the first time phases like crazy side to side and the articulation is muddy at best. Visually they do not march nearly as well as Crown, Cadets & BCoats. The drill is not hard and reminds me of the 1980's Blue Devils from a form and velocity standpoint, however the straight line and rotation in the closer is quite cool and amazingly clean. I was hoping they were going to bring back something like 2011, the Mel Torme stuff works for them! Just expected more from the west coast blue team by now.

BD 86.2 is ahead of the pack now

  2. Hmm...interesting. My gut was heading in a different direction thinking that maybe the judges won't be so intrigued by BD's design approach this time around....and BD lands in 3rd. Have been wrong many times.....but one never knows.

Ooops I think you are wrong - BD just got an 86.2 on July 3 - highest score of the season. I guess the judges do like it. Hmm. . . interesting. I guess you are wrong.

  3. The red accent on the uniform is going to look really cool with the red tambourines they are using. I can't wait to see what the guard is wearing. Looks like there may be costume changes again this year, but I am guessing it is only the guard that changes, but who knows. Haven't seen it yet. The music is AWESOME though.

  4. Why should I or anyone else cheer for everyone? If I am not entertained, if I do not enjoy the product presented then I will not applaud. Applause should be earned, not given. The fact Crown's placement was booed is indicative of a larger problem, and it is not "rude, classless behavior from simple-minded fans."

Really? I had no idea. This is the first time I have heard that. Wow.

No DCI corps earns booing either. Just sit quietly if you do not feel like applauding, but booing is rude and shows poor spirit.

If this is the first time you heard about the riots - I hope you are joking here - if not, please just google the history.

  5. Please stop booing = Please cheer for everyone!

When Crown was announced 2nd - everyone around me started booing and that made me feel very sad. I LOVED Crown's show and thought it was really well done, but all the young people in DCI work really hard and do not deserve to be booed. I'm a big Blue Devils fan, so it was really upsetting to me to hear the crowd react that way. Being in Drum Corps is very difficult work and we should cheer for everyone, even if we have favorites.

Btw - SANTA CLARA = AMAZING show!!! I was so happy that they have such a great show this year. It reminded me of their glory days long ago when they were at the top of their game.

I hope they do well also.

Remember that people rioted after the Premier of the Rite of Spring, so that is kind of what the audience did tonight. History is repeating. GO BD - AMAZING & CREATIVE & WONDERFUL show!!!

  6. Blue Devils have an amazing show this year. I really love the music, the colorful uniforms, and the show concept. If you haven't heard about Da Da - please read the description at this link: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dada You will be amazed at how the show designers were able to express the revolution of art through this BD show. The music is amazing to hear live. I know they have already won 14 times, but this show is incredible worthy.gif

  7. I knew that this show needed a visual component to bring if fully to life. I have seen run through's and thought I knew what to expect. Watching tonight in full uniform under the lights I was blown away at the difference. The excitement, energy and visual package is amazing! This will be another fantastic year for the Dev's.

I have to agree with you as tonight we really saw the total package come together with the AMAZING thumbup.gifMUSIC and the uniforms and the guard package. Really fantastic ideas. I loved the Jazz & how exciting the music was tonight.

  8. Geez there's a lot of prerecorded stuff in the first half, some of it I could understand, but there's a lot that's being covered up and cluttering the music about 2 - 4 minutes in. Ok, I got that off my chest.

I like it, more so than 2009, and 2010, about like last year. I think this one's more like 2008. Lots of great soloist/small ensemble work and a VERY VERY good drumline/pit. The Bird and Bela in B Flat section sounds a lot like what they did in 91. The last about minute and a half is a build into what seems like a jam out section, but I have a feeling there is at least another 1 1/2, 2 minutes to add. I don't love it, but I definitely don't hate it. I just, like it.

My only big criticism is some of the prerecorded stuff that's cluttering up some music in the first half of the show.

Edit: I have a feeling with some changes, rewrites, and typical over the season development by the end of the season I WILL love it. :bluedevil:

It sounded much better tonight than on the recording. I think already they have improved it. The covered up parts were not there anymore and it was much cleaner. But you are right they will change it over the season - just think of how the 1930 show changed.

Most of all the MUSIC PLAY GREAT - it is so jazzy and sounds so great and the big loud endings and enthusiasm from the corps really comes through on the field. It is very exciting.

  9. Uniform changes could be interesting, but the changes would need crazy awesome execution. Guard changes can take place without issues because guard simply adds to the visual (taking them away for a moment doesn't halt the show), but getting hornline plus battery (and pit probably) to change in a show? Well, that is a new one for me. Not really sure how this will work, but if they can pull it off, I'm all for it. After all, the Blue Devils always try to be on the forefront of innovation. This may be one of those groundbreaking moments in drum corps history.

I saw the show tonight & the flash of color & sequins on the all the uniforms is AMAZING. Just standing still the photos may not look so great, but when the corps & guard are dancing & turning and moving across the field the uniforms are INCREDIBLE!!! The horses arrive and then the corps very cleverly puts on their newly designed uniform jackets with silver sequins and their hats. They look amazing and it happens without notice until all of a sudden you notice that the corps has on a different uniform. BEST OF ALL = THE worthy.gifMUSIC is really AWESOME!!!worthy.gif When you hear the enthusiasm of the corps and JAZZ is incredible. I can't wait to hear the Rhapsody in Blue Finale - it is not in the show yet. I took pictures but my iPhone takes terrible pictures, so i can't post them.

  10. Crown

Wait this has to be a joke. Will someone please help Crown with their colors and guard uniforms? Please - I thought the year they wore brown was so ugly against the green grass. Their show & music was amazing but those brown guard uniforms were so dull and lifeless. They seem to be fashion challenged.

  11. Anyone going to the movie theater this Monday? I decided not to go this year because the quality was so bad last year. The colors of the uniforms were wrong. When I saw it the Troopers were dressed in hot pink - I was shocked that they had changed their uniform color (but they really hadn't changed it - the color was just wrong). The cavaliers were in red & the Blue Devils were in Green and the Bluecoats were in green too. Then to top it off - we lost the sound for a big chunk of it and they tried to rewind it (while we had to watch it run backward) to show us again, but still no sound for about 30 minutes. Plus the shows were in the beginning stages and did not come off on the screen so well. Plus I'm a Blue Devils fan and they aren't in it. I was surprised they were showing it out here around Concord in Blue Devils' territory - I doubt they'll make much money on it.

Does anyone else have an opinion about this?

Two years ago - the prelims were amazing to see on the screen as the quality was top notch. Not sure what happened last year.

  12. BD has its pre-season recording up on Mediabox. Wow. Wow. Wow. Make sure your hats are strapped on.

Wait till you see the field show. It is really innovative and the new props that move about the field are pretty incredible although I am not quite sure what everything is - I guess we'll see as the season goes along. I saw an earlier post that said there were no props, but that is the innovative part about these = they are very subtle and you don't see them at first and then all of a sudden they appear. Of course that could change as the season goes along - who knows. The work with hoolahoops that the guard does is really fascinating and creative. At first they just fly all over the field and it looks really random and then you see the organization of it all and how amazing the work is. Pretty fascinating stuff.

  13. No one watches the guard

ARE YOU KIDDING ME? The guard is what makes this activity so beautiful and amazing!worthy.gifGUARD

Cadets & SCV look really good this year & Phantom.

Blue Devils are slow to jell this year. I think their show is still developing and has so many difficult elements.

Cavies on stilts? Don't think so

  14. 1. Cavies . Please no mics for the brass line this year.

    2. BD -Due for a defeat. again. p.s. hate the new uniforms

    3. Bluecoats -These 3 have figured out how to clean better than the rest.

    4. Cadets -great package but visual problems with 2 uniforms.

    5. Crown -Great brass , ok show , fixes all summer long. cant maintain a melody

    6. Blue Stars -good at everything , bad at little.

    7. Phantom , visual and drums keep them away from the top

    8. SCV -too odd a program in a fan friendly year

    9. Blue Knights -Recognizable music wins big with crowd.

    10. Madison - tough to move up.

11.Boston . have not heard anything so.. this pick is based on years past. could go up could go down.

    12. Crossmen . Heard they are loud . big , and fan friendly . adding white to uniforms.

    ---------

    13. Glassmen . have not heard anything as well. could go up could go down.

    14. Academy . heard good things but picture on uniform thread, they look small and bad new uniforms.

15.-17. Colts , Troopers and Spirit not a lot of info so far but these corps are next

WAIT - Please hold off criticism of BD's new uniforms until you see the show on the field. They make sense there and they look amazing and classy with this particular show. I'll bet you'll change your mind once you see it.

  15. I don't believe there were any major issues going into this year with the Cavaliers' uni's, but I still feel as if I should post this for everyone.

Boring - I thought they were going to try "new" things this year & "push the activity" - these are the same old uniforms - where's the creativity?

  16. Absolutely, without a doubt the worst looking things the Blue Devils have EVERY put on the field. Words cannot begin to describe how bad this is. Yes, I am old school. This is my 25th season following drum corps. No uniform, BD or any other corps, can come close to the classic open jackets. That look is BD. The 94-03 unis were tolerable and I came to live with them. 04-05 were pretty bad. 06-10, especially after they switched back to white plumes, were some stripes and a skirt away from being pretty decent. But now this. I am so demoralized by this uniform, my excitement over what was their most accessible and entertaining musical book in decades has largely been sapped tonight. Drum corps is not just the music - there is a visual element and the look can enhance or detract. Like I said...I realize I am in the realm now of old fogy, but as I noted, the most recent uniform was a few tweaks from being a nice modern allusion to the open jackets. But this...it looks like the whole corps will be wearing color guard uniforms.

BD has the one of the richest and most storied histories and traditions in the activity. Why can this staff just not embrace that? Why must they be so bleeding edge for the sake of being bizarre? Retro is in in so many sports so why does a tradition-laden corps like BD thumb its nose at that very tradition? I am not just a naysayer. From what I heard on the pre-season recordings, they nailed the music this year. Absolutely nailed it. That show gave them every opportunity to come out of the gate in a modern take on the classic uniform given the era of the charts.

One week ago I was so excited about 2011. I had planned to travel to DCI Minnesota in addition to my normal trip to Murfreesboro and DCI Southeastern in Atlanta, perhaps even Finals. Now, except for the fact that I was hoping to wrap a mini-vacation trip into the Minnesota show, I do not have a lot of interest in going to drum corps show right now. Hopefully, as when Georgia Tech dropped their traditional football uniforms in 2008, I will get over this change and focus on the very positive of the show. But I truly fear that see the corps march onto the field in these uniforms will be so distracting that it will make it hard to enjoy those positives.

Am I ranting? Yes. But I really love drum corps and I love the Blue Devils, though I never marched anything more than high school band and one week in the Georgia Tech band when I was a freshman. That is why this matters to me because I see something that I have looked forward to every summer for a quarter century slipping away and turning into something that almost no longer interests me. Progress is one thing. But the changes in DCI in recent year have fundamentally detracted from what made it special and exciting to me as a huge fan. I wonder if the year that I have long dreaded has finally arrived - the year I stop caring and start counting down the days to football season now rather than the Sunday after Finals. We'll see how I feel in a week or so. :(

I just saw the BD Family Day performance and those uniforms look really classy on the field. I can see how you would not like them up close in that picture, but on the field - they look amazing. The guard uniform is sheer genius this year as they are black in front with one white leg - some white legs are stripped with black and then they are two tone on the back with dark red bottoms & sparkly yellow gold tops. These four colors flash in & out during the show and it is gorgeous!!

  17. I was at BD Family Night and it was amazing - the Hornline & percussion were out of this world. The music is incredible and especially what they do with those familiar tunes. The visuals are indicators that BD will go undefeated this year. The guard uniforms are really classy & yet very colorful. The bright flashes of color that appear suddenly on the field against the 12 foot white pillars are really amazing. This show has a lot of surprises and I am sure they are just getting started. I can't wait to see this show again and I can't wait to see how it grows over the season!! BD is going to be loved by audiences this year!!
