  1. Volume started out too low in my theater, but was quickly corrected after someone ran out to complain. However, part of this was DCI's fault. The announcers etc were way way louder in the mix than the music, so in between shows the talking hurt my ears, while the music was just barely loud enough for my taste.

Yep, exactly my experience. I had the dude keep cranking it until BD was at what we thought the correct level. I felt clever and proud. And then Rondo and Dennis started talking and it was boomy. That's what I get for being overly confident!

  2. No problem with sound volume at all IMO..... but not for the guy a few rows down. I guess some people expect a "rip your face off" volume like being there. I would go as far to say, this was the best sounding DCI event I've had at the theaters.

It's interesting because when we go to the theater, we kinda bring our personal tastes with us. For example, when I ipod drum corps in my car, it's pretty loud! The next guy, however, might choose a different volume in his car. For nights like tonight, we combine all of those different expectations. . .I wonder what colorguard people prefer? :music:

  3. the volume is ALWAYS an issue. In fact one year I could hear the Matrix movie next door over the corps.

I imagine it will continue to be an issue. . .unless a former marching band/drum corps alum is on the staff and controlling the volume knob. Man, would that be sweet.

Hearing explosions next door is unacceptable to a drum corps fan!

  4. It was way too low at our theater too. My biggest complaint was lack of low end....yeah volume was not too good

I hear ya. . .drum corps brass voicing can get naturally bright and strident so it would take a REALLY good sound system anyway (and we all look forward to that).

Totally get that movie theater faculty to pump it up next time! I feel your pain of sitting through a soft show!

  5. It was definitely too low at my theater tonight in Westchester, NY for my personal taste. It was good though to see a better turn out than semi's or was it quarters??...lol last year at the theater. In years past I have asked management to raise the sound, but I really was lazy tonight and decided not to even bother getting up from my seat hoping someone else would go find management. It felt more like a concert at radio city music hall and my friend was so tired from work...that he kept dozing off...LOL

3 hours was a long haul! If the sound is up for the next show in the theaters, you're friend might make it.

I'm glad to hear that they responded to your request the other time and did turn it up. Most of the times I've asked, the staff normally looks at me and asks "what is this stuff anyway?"

  6. Cadets: Easily the most I have liked them since 2000. As someone in the crowd said "Finally, the Cadets again!". Uniform thing works, and it makes those usual crazy cadet visual moves look crazier. ballad worked well, and at one point when the two pieces laid over each other, it sounded like les Miz. This show, if they don't insert a message and screw it up, can make life fun come August.

I totally heard it that way too! Thought I was the only one!

  7. After reading various experiences in the theater, I noticed several observations about volume being too low.

I consistently have this issue because the theater will typically balance the sound to "movie level" (spoken dialogue). After calling this attention to the manager or employee with a walkie, they manually turned up the volume in our theater. It's to the point where now we just have them there at the beginning and we don't let them leave until the first double forte Ensemble moment of corps X is satisfactory!

When Dci first came to the movies, this problem/solution was at an AMC theater for me. Since then, Fathom as come to a closer theater, Regal Cinema, and the staff there were still able to make the same adjustments for us. It made the hosts (Rondinaro, Delucia, etc) on the louder side, but at least gave us the chance to hear the performances with a better sense of balance and presence.

I couldn't imagine having to watch all the performances where FF came across as MP. Many of you have probably done the same thing in your respective theaters, but wanted to post this in case it could help for quarterfinals or in the future in general.

  8. Which is why i'm fine with it. Id rather have some variation than having things stay the same all season. Things will work themselves out just fine, and I cant really think of a single instance in the past few years, where, by finals, i felt someone was getting screwed... So in the meantime, lets have fun with it! :)

And I think most of us are having fun with it. Fun on DCP maybe spastic and chaotic, but I would characterize the frenzy as fun!

On the whole, this format at the beginning of the season has given fans of several levels much to talk about. IMHO, it has invested some in the season from the get-go in a totally different way.

  9. Cadets- this is the best Cadet show I have seen since '00. My only complaint- demons in pepto bismol pink and WTF with the "main angel" who is in my mom's white bathrobe ? They play well, the uniform contrast works. This show will challenge in August.

I'm sorry, but I found the "mom's white bathrobe" part hilarious. Like I audibly laughed! And I really don't want to appear rude, because like you, I thought the Cadets were f-a-n-t-a-s-t-i-c. Sure it's June, but when this corps programs some of the hardest material of any corps, they have a chance to make some incredible moments come August! I think the characterization will only continue to develop and improve through July.

I enjoy the "White" Angel and think the roles of both main Angel and Demon is good. But that comment was funny.

  10. I think another reason for the variance in judging and outcome of placements is the direct competition of the top 8 so soon. Number management on the part of the judges has never been put under so much immediate duress. Normally the beginning of the season, they have time to settle numbers. If you think they are not looking at previous shows to have an "idea" (not necessarily influence), think again. Not to say that every judge does this, but it is significant.

As Dan Acheson said, this has never been done before in the history of Dci.

  11. The BEST PROP EVER!!! The chair from Vanguards 88 and 89 Phantom of the Opera show. It still sits at the Corps Hall for all to see :)

I didn't know they kept in the corps hall. Very cool factoid. I grew up listening to POTO. It wasn't until VOD came out that I had the opportunity to see these shows and got goosebumps with how effective that "prop" was used!

Not to mention the '89 company front with the battery going drums up made me stand up. . .in front of my computer. :worthy:

  12. There is much discussion happening over in another thread, as to if a corps should have a complete product at the first show or not. I think this poll is fairly straight forward. And for the sake of uniformity, lets just say that there is a difference between a "finals week complete" show, which includes all the extra fun add ons, and a "june/july complete show" which is not what you may see on the dvd, but its the show they put on most of the season minus a few tweaks here and there. Any thing else anyone can think of to clear up this poll?

I certainly get that corps need to utilize the season to develop a program and the end goal in mind is championships. The stratified learning environment of drum corps is one of the fundamental natures of the activity: play music; mark time and play; march and air and valve; march and play. To say that a corps should perform full show, completely filled in, and only expect to clean for the season is not performance reality.

As an audience member, however, it'd be a bummer to have half of the teams obviously incomplete on a night I'd been hyping. As many of us are vets of either drum corps or marching band, I think a level of understanding is just part of being a fan.

What's interesting is how some teams come in incomplete but manage to still be extremely successful, both in score and crowd appreciation. I was not at the show, but spectators said that Cavaliers stopped for the last few seconds of their program and were voted fan favorite. We know that Green Machine is among the highest in quality for each second they are on the field. Evidence to the contrary that a show does not need to be complete to retain the crowd?

  13. Wow! 2 thoughtful, non-flaming replies in a row. Is this still DCP? lol.

But to repeat, do you think audience reaction should in any way be factored in?

As the GE sheet dictates in its current language, crowd response is not directly equated. If I'm not mistaken, there is conversation about whether or not to include crowd response in future shows. It may have been a rule proposal, but it would have to be voted upon and passed.

  14. Michael Gray, their program coordinater, said that it could be marvelous, and it could be disastrous. I think they'll be able to pull it off. I haven't seen it, granted, but the Bluecoats are pretty #### innovative I'd say. They can make this work.

IMHO, this is part of the artistry of the season: taking that which may not work and making it better. It where some of these brilliant designers (from all corps) are worth their weight in gold!

Granted, I haven't seen BC show yet (Monday night and then 100X on VOD  ).

  15. If it were the judges as individuals, then it would definitely be exclusively subjective.

It is governed by the "sheet," or the rubric of criteria that is delineated on the general effect caption paper. Each "box" has benchmarks that must be cleared and lend themselves to the number. Now number assignment/management is decided by a judges interpretation of the sheet. Because they're human, therein lies a natural flaw. On the grand scheme, it's a fundamental distinction in the competitive aspect of the activity.

  16. Latest AllAccess is kick ###.

Hop posted on their FB page that the Angels will be winning tonight. Really, really, really dig the concept of two endings for this show.

Oops, I was so impressed I started a new thread on it. Sorry, Chad! I'm impressed with the media that the Cadets have provided leading up to the start of the season. It has definitely given fans something to feast on in the mean time!

I'm excited for this program to take the field tonight, as well as all of the corps. Best of luck to everyone this summer!
