  1. ... but if they are waiting for those "difficult" moments, then why were they not jumping out of their seats when MBI or the Bucs were on the field performing? Do they really think that Kidsgrove and Empire were the only ones that had anything difficult enough to jump out of their seats?

I make the argument that they are exactly like the DCI crowd... except they are only cheering for their home team because they know the people involved in those organizations. We can deny it all we want, but I think the crowd reaction will change when we move to Maryland. I'm not saying Empire won't entertain, but I think other groups will get better reactions when some group's faithfuls are further away.

Yet in Reading, PA, we still got the biggest reaction. :angel1:

  2. DCA has been blessed to have mnay great, long tenured Drum Majors out there. Wink, Butch, Alan Smythe, Phil gentile, Jimmy, Chris Killian, Josh Decker, George, John Mayer and of course David, who is probably the record setter.

why? because he has been the only DM the corps has ever had on the box. ever.

and yes, they all do fabulous things away from the public eye. I know from my one year with Empire, David definitely got less sleep than anyone else because of all he did/does.

27 years and counting, and really, the last of the true showmen along with John Mayer.

Someone posted a picture of Jimmy Russo. Just from that picture you can tell he's a great DM.

Thought I would post this. Not sure if David would want me to, but it is a good thing.

  3. So if we are going to continue with this line of reasoning......let's REALLy talk design then as well. Is standing still part of the sheets. Is there a great deal of planning with CO2? Is there a degree of talent with standing still. SHould a show flow or stop and go through out the performance and often when the music clearly dictates movement....... SHould there be ANy level thinking outside of the box displayed in the design????

We should really discuss every aspect of the sheets then if we keep going this way. Failure to do so would just short change the truth......

The Bucs prepare to win each year and do not plan to beat other corps. They do heir own thing and do not look in the rear view mirror. They look at what they have and aim push the bar higher. What they do off of the field is equally as important as what they do at each and every rehearsal.

Folks - they won again and earned it. If you have a problem with it - look at how they did it - it was a demanding, well paced, musically written (meaning the visual matched the music WITH movement), tension/release drill design 101 aspects, fantastic perc book written musically to enhance the story line and yet be featured ONLY when appropriate . . .advanced planning with follow through plans. . . you get the idea.

The judges look at all of the sheets and the criteria on them. Biased people have a tendency to ignore them.......reality is reality.

Design and planning is Design and planning.......the off season is extremely important.

Congratulations 2010 Buccaneers on your earned Championship and setting a couple of more records.

I like that shot at us, highlighted above.

FYI....he was talking about cleanliness....not design. Get with it before you start posting.

Also, whats the big deal about one park and bark? I can recall Reading, 2 years ago, standing(worse then a park and bark) for a ridiculous amount of time playing....wait for it...cannon.

  4. Uhhh, sorry to you too, but I've been around long enough that I HAVE seen Emprie WAY out of the top 3. I also was in a corps that 15+ pointed them at finals, so my picks are based on a LOT of history, not wishful thinking. I happen to think that the 4 corps I put over them are gonna pull out some incredible performances, the one true wildcard being Kidsgrove.

The Top 7 are gonna be the best in a long time, so a few corps that legitimately have a shot at the top 3 are gonna place a lot lower than they think they will.

So again, I say, this time with scores....

    Open Class

    1. Buccaneers 99.1

    2. Minnesota Brass 98.6

    3. Hurricanes 97.2

    4. Kidsgrove Scouts 95.9

    5. Empire Statesmen 95.8

    6. Caballeros 95.0

    7. Alliance 92.1

    8. Bushwackers 88.5

    9. Renegades 88.0

    10. Corpsvets 87.6

Dude where have you been? Last time Empire was WAYYYYYYY (not even close to way) out of top 3 was like in the 90's. MAYBE.

Obviously you're predictions are YOUR OWN and thats fine. But still...what does the past's outcomes have to do with 2010's?

I LOVE DCA WEEKEND!!!!!! I can't wait to perform on saturday and sunday. Highlight of the year.

    ($1 to Jeff Ream^)

  5. Just because you cant see past the obvious layer of changes doesnt mean there arent more. We've added body moves, changed horn parts, cut people from some things and added them to others (every corps does it...dont lie :worthy: ), bumped tempos in some places, revamped the dynamics of the most difficult part of the show, changed the entire drill for the exit tune, added a 32 count jazz run sequence in place of some crappy drill, changed more colorguard stuff that I can comprehend (being a brass guy), and there's more to come this weekend. Again, I get it - Empire is always going to be known for their more 'campy' gimmicks, but do you REALLY think the judges are so easily impressed that when they see a dude in a tin man suit they think "WOW, thats WAY better than READING!!!111one!!!"?

....The answer is obviously no, and yet we beat Reading in effect last weekend anyway. Must be all that other added stuff that you assume only the Bucs are smart enough to figure out. I'm not going to say whether we'll beat them or not, but if we dont, it sure won't be because of a few props or fire extinguishers. But hey!, If you're worried, maybe you should head over to the pet shop and get them that parrot....

    Well said Nick.

  6. One and the same in DCA.

Out of the DCA Rules Book: "It is DCA's objective that member corps should be entertaining, unique, emotional, diverse, vibrant, spirited and energetic without sacrificing the highest level of quality. Competition outcomes MUST reflect audience appreciation and provide participant gratification."

    :worthy:

  7. I've said many times on these boards that Empire is extremely entertaining. I had the pleasure of seeing them live last year, and even though folks agreed that it was not a particularly strong year for them, they came to play and came to win. Empire has a horn line to die for and it certainly appears to be their strong point this year again. They have a fine corps and what appears to be a very dedicated membership. Certainly all the best to them this weekend! HOWEVER, it is simpy my opinion that their shows always seem a bit dated. This years program just seems to lack the content necessary to contend. Especially the visual. And why all the add ons over the last few weeks of a season. If the staff feels the added props, effects, gadgets, etc. are so effective, why not integrate them with the program from the beginning instead of getting their butts kicked all year and then think, "perhaps if we add a dancing bear"?? Imagine BD thinking, "maybe if we add a few more mirrors"? Imagine this...Bushwackers program, with Empires numbers. BTW, did I mention that Empire is very entertaining. See...it ain't ALL Bucs.

Is this a bad thing? I have to add that we haven't added any props, effects or gadgets.

There is nothing wrong with adding more to your show as the season progesses...

    All I can say is...3.8, 2.3, 1.8, .8

  8. Opps, I forgot to add "except guard". And of course we're not including subcaptions. As I said, Reading has a few second place ordinals. Perhaps we can agree, that is has been quite the impressive season once again for the Bucs. Can they go into the championships and lose? Perhaps. But does anyone really think there is a better corps in DCA at the moment?

We won Field Visual, Field Brass and Ensemble brass at Scranton. This past weekend we won GE too.
