  1.  And now for the visually best opening 30 seconds of this year's shows.  Choreographed random movement, lines that shift and segment, a moment where the corps disappears in silhouette, a snow storm of capes that almost instantly disappear.  Energy, energy, energy.  For a visually oriented guy like me, pure eye candy!  🤩😍

    wow yeah I love it!

Even more effective than how they come off is how quickly they completely disappear — kinda magical. Funny how this one effect makes them look 150% more confident right out of the gate.

The whole first 30 seconds is just pure eye candy! Such a joy to watch. As a visual artist rather than a musician the opening just grabs me and captures my full attention.  I especially love the point where they all turn their backs to the stands for a second and their capes/tunics/jackets turn the entire corps into a solid black silhouette.  A small but powerful visual moment.

This, this, this. Such a good point and an aspect of this that is severely underrated. And when you do notice them pushing the props, the MMs are still being told to make it a part of the performance. Do it in character. Don’t just push a prop: make it part of the show.

So true. BD treats props as being part of their visual ensemble world. They are less than humans, but more than just objects.

I only watch on hi cam and I think this is the closest i've seen the uniform. do they change the tops after the first 30 seconds?

Yes. They start wearing a cape like tunic, which they then remove and throw into the air. The nifty part is that once the corps comes out onto the field all of the tunics have disappeared completely!

  5. I love the first 30 seconds of BD‘s program. I was really impressed with it when I saw it live Friday night in Sacramento. The whole center prop structure with everybody on it looks wonderful. When they start moving it’s like chaos that is perfectly choreographed! The white stripes on their shoulders of the tunic create straight lines and segments that seem to vibrate. Then when they turn around the backs of their uniforms are solid black and they become a silhouette for a second. It’s real visual eye candy.

Fair enough. Hope you can watch the replay!

I'm in Eastern time too, so I feel your pain, but I think having more performing groups for the audience in attendance is a good thing.  Shows used to be longer, so I guess I'm just grateful there are enough acts to fill necessitate that much time.

This show has traditionally been much longer. Blue Knights almost always attended. Academy and/or Troopers as well. In addition, any Easr Coast or Midwest corps that had decided to come west that year. This is the first time that I can recall it being an all California show.

Fantastic show tonight. I was in the VIP section (meaning upper half of the stands between the 35s) around the 40 yard line. It feels like it’s been so long since I’ve seen (and heard) live drum corps. Flo, for all it allows us to see, just can’t do justice to the sound and balance of seeing these corps live. The way Flo mics the pit speakers individually but keeps them at full level in the mix makes soloists and pit instruments way overbalanced compared to what it’s like in person. For example, BD’s mic’d soloists blended absolutely beautifully. And Mandarins opening trombone feature is far more balanced than on Flo, where one player is always right under Flo’s left field mic.

BD was on fire. That’s pretty much all that needs to be said. Strong across the board.

SCV thankfully had their ending (there’s some sections of fast criss cross drill that make me think they might have had it for a few days but hadn’t properly rehearsed it enough for it to be safe yet). But I don’t think that ending is going to change anyone’s minds about the program.

Mandarins had a great run tonight. Their vocalist continues to have his best performance each time, and that ballad is turning into one of my favorite musical moments of this season. They made some musical improvements too that seemed to address what I think has been their dirtiest portion so far (the fast part of their second movement).

Total agree with your comments of the sound quality vs flo. The balance live is so much better. All of the corps sounded better, which I would expect. BD had me grinning their whole show. The show just flows beautifully, and it’s simply eye candy. It never seems to bog down either visually or musically. Mandarins have matured so much as a corps; and they perform with a confidence that surpasses anything in their past. You can tell that they believe they can run with the big boys.
