  1. Away from the East Coast parades are not a revenue stream open to DCA Corps.  For decades now, many cities charge the Units a prohibitive fee to march in a parade.

Just curious, what do parades pay way out there ?

  2. As long as DCA thinks of itself as a NE Niche activity, it will wither and die.

To sustain itself DCA needs to embrace, that future growth will start in the near South, and near Midwest.  And that the NE Corps will have to start traveling beyond the Western, and Southern border of Pennsylvania to compete.

  3. Lucas Oil Stadium would be the venue.

Great exposure for the DCI folks who have had little, if any, experience with the DCA product.

If true, I can think of three Class "A", and three Open Class Corps that could/would (no brainer for a score on DCA sheets) make the trip this year for the August 8th date. One, Kidsgrove, would already be in town.  There would be no restrictions as Terry Schehr alluded too.

Additionally, a phenomenal recruiting opportunity for Age Out's, and those who are using a DCA program as a spring board into a DCI Corps.

I ask because as an active DCA market, Pittsburgh has been dead for 25+ years

I was thinking Alumni, Parents and Fans from Columbus, Atlanta, Birmingham, Cincinnati, St Paul and Greensboro.

A daunting decision for Mid-West and Southern Corps considering a DCA effort is the $20,000 +/- per trip to the I-95 Corridor to compete.  Let's be honest the "DCA Eastern Only" model has been worked to death.  To promote growth, and the activity, there needs to be expansion.

Which I-95 Corridor Corps would/could commit to annual travel budget in the $40,000 to $60,000 (or more) dollar range to remain viable and compete within the circuit? Or for that mater contemplate a 24 hour bus trip, to and from a contest site?

When considering Finials contest sites, and dates.  The needs, and time commitment of Corps mentioned above need to be considered.  For almost all the  Corps cities above the Thursday before Finials is a travel day, and with Finials late on Sunday, Monday travel is a must for those with members with school and work commitments.

Without the Mid-West, and South DCA finials would be comprised of seven (7) Open Class Corps, and one (1) Class "A" Corps.

  5. Buckle up it's going to get bumpy !

Currently six of DCA's competing Thirteen Corps are from west and south of the Allegheny Mountains.  The Mid-West and South can rightly lay claim to DCA's major growth area.  Costs to compete in the "DCA CORRIDOR" for us are in $20,000 (plus or minus a thousand or two) range per trip.

I would offer that it's time to rethink the whole I-95 approach, and possibility move West to an I-79 venue.  Much more doable for Drum Corps fans that want support their local Mid-West and Southern Corps, and much cheaper for non I-95 Corps to attend.

Without the Mid-West, and South, DCA's pretty much a seven corps circuit.  The answer to "Will DCA Be Around in Five Years" lies in can DCA embrace growth, and compromise a little.

Rumblings  are that there may be one or two more Mid-West organizations considering moving into DCA in 2020.

  6. It’s been easier finding web and Facebook sites than city/state and rehearsal locations. I believe we’re making it way too hard for prospective members to find All-Age opportunities to play and complete.

There are now 122 All-Age corps listed, not including the service based corps. More contact info to follow.

I’m only listing Corps or Groups that have an active rehearsal / performance schedule.

Groups like the Chattahoochee Vanguard Mini-Corps getting together in basements, halls, heck even kitchens are just as important to the All-Age activity as any other group.

If representitives from the corps listed below could help with City/State and web sites I'd be greatfull. We're at 48 All-Age groups with more Mini, Alumni, SDCA, Parade, and Study/Club corps to list.

  12. The “All Age” drum corps activity seems to be in very good health, despite what the boo birds would have you believe.

According to this forum - DCA is growing, (“Open”, “A” and “Mini Corp”) nation wide. SDCA is expanding. Alumni corps are doing very well. Parade corps are healthy and new ones are forming. And independent Drum Corps Clubs are getting together to play through scores and keep chops in shape.

I’d like to see a “roll call” of all organized, and not so organized, all age drum a bugle groups and locales.

  13. Thirty-four All-Age corps, from around the country, on an incomplete list is absolutely great. Will they all make it to DCA Finials this year, who cares it's only a matter of time before the fledging growth of today becomes the solid competitors of tomorrow.

The possibility of twice the number of "A" corps to Open corps in competition this year, is a hugely positive outlook for our entire activity. To have, within the DCA family, the ability, and opportunity, to grow from a group of I&E competitors to a Mini Corps, to an "A" Corps, and then on to an Open Corps is one of the best things we've got going.

However, as we've seen with Mini Corps, the possibility of "A" corp "specialists" just strengthens, and improves the activity for all of us. Unlike the other drum corp circuit, DCA's encouragement, and support of the up and comers as well as that of the established corps, will ensure that the All-Age activity continues to grow across the country.

    Regards, Gary

  14. What a small world.

Nearly two week ago I attended a drum/percussion teachers clinic that was sponsored by Vic Firth. The event was held the day after the Percussive Arts Society's International Convention (more to follow concerning PASIC).

Stanton Moore, one of the top players and clinicians in the world, was there and mentioned that he targeted Brother Martin for high school because he had heard that there was a pretty good drum instructor there. He spoke warmly about Marty, and the effect that his time with him had not only on his playing, but his professional development as well.

I mentioned Bobby's impact on Marty and several in the room of about 150, knew about Mr. Thompson's work and his development of not only exceptional rudimential drummers, but guys like Steve Gadd that went on to successful drumming careers as well.

I'll make sure that Stanton gets the web link about Marty.

  15. Racine would be a fine place for a showdown; at Historic Horlick Field.

Will I need to renew my Passport to get to Racine from Indiana?

I would offer Indy as a Central "Throw Down Site." Great facilities, super cooperation among schools, and a built in local audience for the activity. With DCI, Bands Of America and the Percussive Arts Society headquartered downtown, I guarantee we could "Get-ER-Done."

Indianapolis is centrally located, great expressway access and less than eight hours from Atlanta, So, we could have a Central - South shoot out!!

Besides Central Indiana is home to two great DCI programs - The Bloomington Scouts (formally of Madison Wis) and the Indianapolis Blue Stars (Formally of LaCross Wis).

    Besides, I'm tired of driving!

    Regards, Gary
