  1. On the dress rehearsal relative to Madison: They have finally taken the leash off the horn line! The music is aggressive, challenging and recognizable. The sound is bright, rhythmic and energetic. The visual matches the speed and aggressiveness of the music, but so far, lacks the control necessary to make the over all show enjoyable. The performers aren't sure of the show visually. That will come. The bigger question is whether the visual (written) "book" is conducive to demonstrating the necessary cleanliness. They need to increase their tolerance levelarrow-10x10.png in that area to be successful. They won't peak early!!

  2. For me, I have a hard time not comparing their iteration to all the other Firebird shows that have been done (thinking Phantom...07?). By comparison, I dunno...sci-fi and Firebird just don't mix, to me. A strong, energetic closer, though. Good for them. Still hoping SOA moves up, though.

Sci-Fi/Firebird works. Listen to Walter (Wendy) Carlos version of Firebird

  3. I have nothing to rant about. But, does anyone know when they announce the judges? And where do I find the listing?

The chief judge use to tell the judges which show they were working at a wednesday night meeting. however, this was almost 20 years ago. I was sometimes told ahead of time of my own assignment but was sworn to secrecy untill the wed. nitght meeting. pretty sure DCI will post it by tomorrow morning

  4. I just got back from Rockford. It was a great show, but the lowlight for me was the Blue Devils show. In my opinion, it was by far the least audience engaging show of the night. They went on first, and I liked all the shows that followed better. And the the judges put them in first by a comfortable margin? I understand they are an extremely talented group of kids, but aren't the new scoring sheets supposed to reward entertaining and engaging the audience? They sounded like they were back to bleeps and blops which the judges apparently still eat up. Play a frickin melody that will leave me humming to myself after the show.

My only other gripe is that there were no 'instant encores' this year at this TOC event. Disappointing. Guess the corps wanted to get out of there. Long drive ahead of them.

Otherwise, the show was great. Great venue. Nice summer evening. Phantom was great. Also enjoyed the Cadets much more than I thought I would.

I was at the show in rockford and I was very disapointed with the blue devils as well as the cavaliers. the blue devils are incredibly talented and are trained very well. execution in all captions. but their show totally lacks in drill. virtually NO interesting FORM DEVELOPMENT. infact it frequently lacks in form all together. coordination must not be on the GE sheet anymore. are we trending toward a circus act? WGI judges on all 3 visual captions has resulted in shows with an overkill by color guards. the guards now are working a hundred miles an hour through the entire program. how can you support music development that grows and build to creating a strong climax. Oh, I forgot. we now longer have musical development, builds and climaxes. now we have a phrase or strain of something. it sounds like a bunch of etudes. Phantom had a very coordinated and tastefull program.

  6. I know the Cedarburg show is considered a home show because it was started by Layton Olsen, who's son marched Scouts. As such, the Scouts are generally treated to certain perks surrounding the show such as staying at the show site and being treated to a feast of a lunch after the 4th of July Parade. As for South Milwaukee, I thought that show was put on by, if not in conjunction with, Pioneer. I always thought it was their HS, not the scouts.

Actually, Cedarburg was the home of the Mercury Thunderbolts. The Thunderbolts drum major, John Vasey joined the scouts when he moved to Madison in 1966. Vasey's father ran the Cedarburg show in the late 60's and early 70's

  7. 7:40 PM Blue Stars

    7:57 PM Phantom Regiment

    8:14 PM Carolina Crown

    8:31 PM The Cavaliers

    8:48 PM The Cadets

    9:05 PM Bluecoats

    Contest Coordinator - Dave Eddleman

    Chief Judge - John Phillips

    Color Guard - Michael Lentz

    GE Music - David Starnes

    GE Visual - Richard Kemp

    Music Analysis - Jay Webb

    Music Brass - Andrew Cook

    Music Perc. - Martin Griffin

    Visual Analysis - Marie Czpinski

    Visual Proficiency - Juno Orefice

Kemp on GE visual ensures cavies will win that caption. czapinski ensures cavies win that caption. it's a lock!

  8. Are you serious Boo ? You think fewer people would go to the WS if the teams met before during the season ? Obviously you don't follow sports ! People go for the competition - period.

As to the interest in knowing attendance - there is a negative trend of fewer corps and lower attendance that should be a concern to anyone in DCI. Were yo\u aware that some sponsor contracts with DCI are predicated on attendance totals - thus the reason DCI is not wide open with attendance figures.

DCI corps have reached a pinnacle of excellence in terms of execution - just astounding in many cases - yet as corps get better, attendance drops ? Something is amiss and it goes beyond G7 etc.

you're right that people go for the competition which might be why fewer people went to nationals this year. not only did everyone know who was going to win prior to indianapolis but the other corps stay in the same order from thursday to friday to saturday. there is absolutely no suspense. the venue is bad as well and I still say the choice of music is not what the majority of drum corps fans want to here. there's a lot of coordinators out there like charlie the tuna. they're trying to show good taste...but they don't taste good.

  9. If your friends haven't heard of Brahms, or if they don't recognize "Carmen" or "Carnival of the Animals" or "Stranger in Paradise" or "Pomp and Circumstance" or "Scheherazade" when they hear it, then they've lived very sheltered lives. I can't believe that the eight 19th C. composers I listed could be more obscure as names to your friends than --to turn to classical composers of any era played in the 1972 DCI championships-- Manuel de Falla, Gustav Holst, William Walton, Modest Mussorgsky, or H. Owen Reed.

you're right!! now and then you hear a familiar "strain". it comes right after you hear 45 minutes of what sounds like repetitive brass exercises and right before the 45 minutes of what sounds like repetitive trumpet etudes. If we know this crap, the concession stands should start serving gray pou pon on there HOT DOGS

  10. I serously doubt DCI will flourish by targeting theatre and ballet audiences. In fact, the way I see it, the ballet and theatre arts are hurting DCI more than they could ever help it.

I came from a competitive high school band program. What got me into drum corps was how cool it was. Phantom 96 was cool, dark, huge sounding. BD 94,95,96,97,99 those drumlines were totally Bad@#$! Cavies 95 or 2000. SCV late 90's early 2000's. I'm not an old drum corps guy, but this is a more complex problem than simply DCI. Competitive marching band in high school is in trouble. More and more directors are taking the easy route and fielding only football bands. High school and college age youth are the future of this activity. They are the future members, fans and sponsors. If we don't appeal to them, we die.

No offense to any MM efforts, this is strictly critisizing design efforts, but how cool is Cadets 2010 show to a high school kid? This show would appeal to little kids and old ladies. It was very cute. Not exactly 96 Phantom, or 90's BD. I didn't find it appealing at all, all the stuff I wanted to see and hear I was distracted from. That's not a knock on the cadets either. A lot of groups I appreciated were very hard to enjoy through all the "sophistication" and "artistry". I teach high school competitive drumlines. My most effective recruiting tool is "The Line" DVD from BD 95, 96 and 97. Also Keeping up with the Jonz 2004. What makes these appealing to youth? Often times, I am embarrased to show high school kids some of the modern shows that are coming out. This is a general statement though, there are a few modern shows I love. I loved Phantom this year, for instance, but even they were a little "artsy". Kids don't want to look or be a part of something that will get them made fun of by their peers. We are already fighting a stigma attached to the activity, then we feed into it......what did you think would happen?

I also think that we need to understand that youth control much more of the consumer market than even most adult demographics do. What pop groups are at the top of the charts and bringing in the most money? The ones that appeal to youth. Most of these groups do not even put out very good music, but they have a "cool" image. Kids get their parents to buy them merchandise, take them to concerts or shows, buy them cell phones. Kids could bring entire families to DCI events.

I'm not saying that we change what the activity is, but I know the kids I have worked with over the years would connect much easier to shows that weren't designed so artsy, and were more Bad#$%. Kids want to be bad@#@ and want to feel Bad!@#@. I want more bad@#$ shows myself!

Some corps do a decent job of this now. However, I wouldn't use Madison as the leading example either. Madison is going in a direction that really appeals to fans from the 70's and 80's. The kids I teach who are up on the activity, were not talking about Madison much at all after this year. They liked Cavies, Phantom, Crown and Bluecoats. However, these kids didn't LOVE these shows top to bottom. There were parts of every show they didn't like. Cheesy dancing, or play acting. They also didn't like the electronics any more than the old drum corps people did. It didn't make them as angry, but it certainly isn't attracting them to the activity.

Financially, I have taught many super talented kids who wanted more than anything to march in DCI, who couldn't afford dues. I do think reasonable dues costs need to be found. High school band booster organizations have helped to fund some, but these groups are just as strapped as the corps are right now.

Maybe other people's experiences are completely different than mine, but I def. am finding it harder and harder to use DCI materials as recruiting tools for getting kids to join competitive marching band at the high school level. And if we ignore that, we are cutting the entire activity off at it's heels. That, to me, is an image problem. This year we took a large group of kids and their parents to a DCI show to introduce them to the activity and recruit them to join the high school marching band. Some of the dads had a look on their face watching the shows like I was trying to recruit their son to be in ballet, when he wants him to play football. The NFL is putting out a much cooler image than we are currently, what kid doesn't want to be an NFL star? They are bad!@^@

In a nut shell, I think DCI needs to be more bad@@#!!!!:tongue::thumbup:

some very good points here. however there is a conflict. as you stated the kids want to play a certain style. but if you're talking about expanding the activity to a wider non drum corps audience and an audience that is old enough to be able to pay for tickets you'd better start thinking about playing some music that's not the latest technical edgy version of some obscure composer from the 1800's or the latest concert band composer that's primarly popular on college campus. READ the repertoire of the 22 world class corps. you'll get bored just reading it! worse yet are the corps that destroy the intent of a "piece", loosing the "development" and/or "build" portion. emotion should be the goal. emotion is a heart felt response. your not going to get goose bumps from a manufactured "high" and it's getting to be more and more MANUFACTURED HIGH

  11. The Madison Scouts have a much more favorable judging pool tomorrow nite for them , as Boston could not have had a worse drawing pool for them for tomorrow ( Allison will single handedly kill Boston tomorrow ). If Madison was only 4 tenths down tonite to Boston, the Madison Scouts will beat Boston tomorrow at Finals and you can take that to the bank. From 15th to 9th is the biggest jump in placement of any Corps this year and this bodes vey well for the Madison Scouts for next season.

however, kemp is on GE tomorrow night. and like the other chicago judges (chops and marie), he will pound the scouts down.

  12. How you've got me Googling Cave Gear...

What kind of uniforms would you guess that they would wear with a Show title like that?

    Maybe something from Thunder Dome?

when they take off the cave gear for the final tune, they become female impersonators. it will play well in san francisco. it's a "flaming" portrayal of the rockettes

  13. Do not be shocked at what scores they get tonight. The last few years they have started between 61-64 range. I hope for better, but first scores can often be strange.

    Dr. Mike

    Drum Corps World

unfortunately you're probably right. 15 or 20 years ago there were several confident judges that loved to demonstrate they recognized change from the status quo. and they had no problem reacting and then popping a number. with this wgi bunch......I don't think so

  14. Pictures of glassmen phantom and bluecoats? How glassmens drill is since that's been a weakness the last couple of years.

drill doesn't matter anymore. with wgi visual judges, all they'll have to do is have a good guard and the horn line do some of those silly body moves

  15. True, they're usually cleaner early, but they'll clean up, besides I think that show is MAD cool... sorry, had to...

agree! if you're clean at this time of the season, you've got a simple show. period! the cavaliers are closest in repertoire which is a good sign. the more complex takes longer to clean
