  1. Not sure if any marching members will remember this one from Crossmen 1999.

We were performing our show at Giants Stadium. There was one part in our closer 'Appalachian Morning' when we we playing backfield. On the turn around we realized the drum majors hand were not with what we were playing at all. Its sometimes real hard when all you hear is the echo bounces of all the stands and side walls. Nice big ensemble tear right there. It was very embarrassing. Again, not sure if anyone remembers this, but I sure did.

  2. question....

Does anyone know what Crown's musical selections are yet? I know it's speculated that they will be playing Rachmaninov in their supposed show entitled, 'RachStar'.

I ask this question, because I was browsing around on that "video website :winky:" and I saw a posting from a current Crown brass player. The caption under the video describes the musical selection to be Symphonic Dances.

Could this be a potential selection? What would your guess be? I hope this is one of the pieces they play.

Take a listen below and tell me you can't see Crown tackling this amazing musical masterpiece.

  3. There are all sorts of factors that go into it, like retaining staff (that the members like), designing a quality show, providing an enjoyable experience for the members, etc. But mostly I think it's just a question of on-the-field success. Bones had its best retention in recent years after 2008, which was also their highest placement on the field since 2004. I don't think that's a coincidence.

The people that stuck around after 2008 did so because they liked the staff, they thought the show design was decent, and had a good experience. But mostly they stuck around because the corps did well and they wanted to build on the progress of the previous year. Momentum cannot be underestimated (just look at Glassmen/Bluecoats/Crown/Blue Stars's meteoric rises to the top).

But then the 2009 season went less-than-well, so those people jumped ship. You can talk about a lot of off-the-field things, which can certainly make people that might have stayed otherwise leave, but in order to keep people that would leave otherwise, you need to see some success score-wise.

Yea, I agree. the staff has a big part to play in retenion. I know from past experience that the early 2000's had a high retention rate due to the staff(ie Dean and Chuck, for brass). Plus it didn't hurt that the programs were great as well. It definately does help.

I think that due to the fact the last years show was a nice shout out to years past, and the great staff on board, this year should have a great turnout and hopefully have a high retention for 2012 and into the near future. :)

  4. I am very excited to see The Cadets this year. Actually, every year I've always been real excited to see what was up the sleaves of the designers. This year, obviously, is no different.

The Cadets like to push the boundaries of drum corps. I mean, hello?! Where has everyone been the last decade or so!!?? Anway, the use of vocals in this piece, to me, is critical. You need it. It wont work without it. There is another thread floating around this site somewhere of a high school marching band playing "Angels", and the opening segment with the singer was BEAUTIFUL (maybe HOP can somehow find that girl).

It wont be the whole show, more than likely. It's The Cadets. They somehow seem to make it work. Sometimes their shows tend to be "over-desinged", but untimately the product as a whole usually works.

Some people just need to take a chill pill, sit back, be open minded and wait until the summer to pass judgement. Who knows, maybe this will be our 2011 DCI Champ this year.

  5. ...UPDATED LINK...

Not sure if any of you heard of a movie from the 80's called, "Return to Oz". I remember this movie mostly for its amazing score composed by David Shire.

The Main Theme from the movie would make for a great ballad on the field!

    Check it out here ====>>

  6. Here's my take on it.

    Is Jim Prime brilliant-YES

    Is Robert W. Smith brilliant-YES

Both would be great. As for RWS's arrangements for the Glassmen...let's take a look at the choice of repertoire. Some of it has been awesome, some not so much. There is only so far that a brilliant arranger can take a great piece of music.

The other side of it is the talent of the horline members and teaching staff. This is not a knock on the Glassmen, but could it be that the arrangements did not shine because the instruction wasn't as great as it needed to be, or the performance? Just some thoughts.

Let us not forget also, Scott Boerma wrote a brilliant arrangment of Malaga in 1994, which was even better in 1995-possibly one of the best closers ever, and in 2004, well...let's just say it left a lot to be desired.

There are so many factors that play in....let's not just look at the man's work with one organization, there's more to it than that.

I think the boys are in good hands, no worries.

So, I wonder if Glassmen is getting a new arranger then? Maybe Prime is going to Glassmen? Interesting...

I think this is good news. Everyone seems to be upset. Why not wait until we actually get to hear some music first!

  7. There's a Stan Kenton chart called "Alone" that I always thought Bones or Madison would sound great with...here's a link. The recording quality isn't great, but you'd get the idea. Listen to it all the way to the end. Lots of possibilities, especially with some clever arranging. The chart is available from Sierra Music. I've done it with a decent HS jazz band. Doable by the Bones, easily.

Yes, I can definitely see Xmen playing this tune. Very good Kenton piece. If Chuck got his hands on this.... whoa, I wish i was under 21 again
