  1. We were at the Cinecast last night and I can say something positive about every show we saw. We liked them all. However, since I hold the Cadets near and dear to my heart, I have one criticism. Please, please, please change what the narrator is wearing. He's a good looking, extremely tall young man with a magnificent voice and that particular costume or whatever it is you want to call it simply doesn't fit him or the show. He should be wearing something that would "suit" the role of a historian or a teacher of sorts....something more dignified than an ill-fitting, modified Cadets uniform. Of course, this is just MHO. Thanks.

  2. I was thinking more how your "support" statement could be taken.....

And for everyone else, Dan and I grew up in the same school district just one year apart. We never met that I know of.

Only thing I've heard about Chester is by reputation. And most of that was from in-laws who went to school at West Chester U.

West Chester University is nowhere near the city of Chester.

  3. When you say "who has the better show," and the choices are the undefeated corps vs the, what 19th place corps? And Blue Devils are 20+ pointing them?

How the H is this even a legit question?! Anyone who doesn't know Blue Devils are a FAR superior show design/performance are either extremely dim when it comes to drum corps, are blinded by their bias against Blue Devils. Say Surf are more entertaining, and there's no argument (obviously that's all opinion). But saying they have a better show is asinine

Also, Surf's show was far better decades ago when someone else did it first (and better  )

You just turned what is a hysterically funny thread into something entirely different. I think you need to lighten up just a lil bit, ok? :)

  4. I am not a music major. I am not an elitist. I am not a snob. I am the parent of a current MM of another corps and I don't feel I am being disloyal when I say that both my husband and I were completely mesmerized by BDs show. They literally kept us on the edge of our seats with our jaws hanging open and we haven't even seen it live yet. When I hear people saying over and over and over, "I don't get it", I have to laugh. What's not to get? Every single moment of their show has Dada written all over it. They have adhered to their theme throughout. Yes, Cabaret Voltaire ventures outside the box but isn't that what we want. Don't we want different and exciting and breathtaking even though it doesn't quite fit the criteria to which we are accustomed? I am a loyal fan of the corps that my son marches, but I also give credit where credit is due. In my opinion, the Blue Devils have hit the mark this year. I was entertained, excited and amazed by what they put on the field.

  5. Very good point. I think most corps adapt this idea. However, it still doesn't explain the late season total re-desgin of uniforms that the Cadets are now notorious for.

    Frankly, I find it annoying.

If you will recall, the guard uniforms from the 2010 show "Toy Souldier" were exactly like the corps proper and when they took the jackets off they had a hot pink shirt underneath. Unfortunately, when the shirts got wet (which they did with every performance) the pink bled onto the cream pants. It wasn't a good situation for the guard or the show in general. It looked sloppy. Thus, the new uniforms.

It is my understanding that last year's original guard uniforms did not match up with what the designer wanted. It's drum corps and stuff happens.

  6. You hit the mail on the head there!

We still go to shows but the enetertainment factor up and down the board is just not there. It has improved somewhat the last few years, but still not in the same league overall as in the good ole days. (70's, 80's, 90's)

Prime example, how many good old fashioned standing ovations do you see at shows today? They are few are far between.

There's little to nothing worthy of standing up and cheering about. A few isolated moments here and there just isn't going to cut it and I'm certainly not alone in that sentiment!

Whoa! I'm not young by any stretch and have only been a drum corps fan for about 5 years so I know very little about the shows of the 70's, 80's or even the 90's outside of what I've listened to via Fan Network. That being said, I find it insulting to every kid who is out there in the scorching heat, practicing 12 hours a day trying to perfect a show for ALL of our enjoyment, when you say there is little to nothing worthy of standing up and cheering about. I stand up and cheer because good show/bad show, those kids all worked their butts off and they deserve our respect and support. Personally, I will give every corps I see this year a standing O. They all deserve it!

  7. It's really fascinating to watch people passing judgement on all these corps based on a preseason, poor quality web video

Geez - corps are still learning drill

Rewrites to come! And people are talking about balancing with the pit, staging, transitions, and writing various corps and/or programs off

    Too funny!

Usually by late July things become clear... sit tight and enjoy folks - season is about to BEGIN :)

  8. I don't normally post here although I do read a lot of the threads. Here is my two cents. I have some insight from a couple of veteran Cadets who, when the Christmas theme was announced were not too happy. However, about a week and a half after move-ins, they quickly came to realize that this show wasn't going to be a cheesy, hit-you-over-the-head with a Christmas tree type show. The musical book is very challenging, even moreso that last year, and the drill is crazy fast in many places which is typical Cadets. Most importantly, the kids are having fun and loving it.

For those folks who are already putting the lid on the Cadets this year, shame on you. From my meanderings on DCP, I think they are one of the only corps who give us all something to look at this early in the season. So, you don't like Christmas music. So what? There is a lot of music I don't particularly care for but can appreciate nonetheless when it is presented in a unique and creative way.

Christmas music or not, don't count the Cadets out this year. The members are loving what they are doing and that means a lot. Let's just wait and see how things progress before we pass judgment on a corps that has the guts to actually let you see what they are up to pre-season. :)

  9. I think it's completely ridiculous that the bolded has to be said whenever someone posts something about BD. We're supposed to be adults.

I am very much an adult and the reason I wrote that disclaimer is because I read here all the time and I see what happens whenever anything negative is said. I simply wanted to be very clear. I LOVE everything about drum corps. This is my son's 4th year marching and I try to turn on as many of my friends as possible. It's a niche activity that both needs and deserves more exposure. I'm sorry if I unknowingly offended anyone.

  10. The only constant is change. Which applies to EVERYTHING. While I never marched I can remember watching the finals on PBS when I was in middle school and high school (I'm 50!) and thinking how amazing it was. Now that my kids have been involved since about 2004 and I've been to countless shows, spent many hours at rehearsals of the 4 differnet corps our family has been memebers of, I STILL think it's amazing. No, from my perspective which is obviously differnt from someone who has, in fact, marched, there are any number of things which are occuring both on and off the field within drum corps. But overall, I look at the activity and see the musicianship, the creativity and the talent these young people exhibit and I continue to be amazed.

Everyone will look back at their time in Drum Corps as the best and will long for the "good old days."

I love this post. Thank you!!

  11. Agree 100%. Completely.

I brought my daughter, future son-in-law and my employer to the show this year, none of whom had ever seen a drum corps performance previously. They were blown away by what they saw on the field and enjoyed the music each corps played, however, from a strictly entertainment value point of view, the show they found to be least engaging was BDs. All three were confused as to the intended use of the props and found them distracting. I am not a BD "hater" or "basher" in any way. I think the Blue Devils have an incredible amount of talent and I have the utmost respect for each and every member and the hard work and dedication they all put into their show. I am simply posting this to show how the average person, who has had no previous drum corps exposure, felt about what they saw.

  12. Back to the OP. Possibly one of the most clever posts Ive seen here. I love it and saw lots of positives in your post. People of DCP need to chill and understand the intent of the post. Loved it!

Why on earth do so many people get their panties in a knot over a post that was blatantly intended to be humorous and tongue in cheek. Lighten up why don't ya!!

  13. Ok, I’m 50 … I’ve been around DCI so long I was one of the original “Friends of DCI”. I sat through 16 drum corps and enough of all this positive stuff everyone feeds everyone I wanted to share with you the cold hard brutal truth … only one corps will win and some corps are better than others. Deal with it. Here we go

The Colts – what’s up with the lightning bolt on those uniforms?

The Academy – What happened? Cavaliers have a sell on guard uniforms last year and you thought “The Matrix” look was cool?

The Glassmen – Guard was scary – horn line wishes they were scary.

Troopers – The Road Home? Come on I didn’t see an I-40 sign at all in your show. Ok, I will give it to you, you got me all emotional at the end with those old Trooper Flags waving off the background. SHAME on you for making an old man cry. I had a senior moment, sorry it won't happen again.

Spirit of Atlanta – too much white … loose the white plumes. Man you guys spent a fortune on those story boards. Please let me know when you have a sale at the end of the year. I know a couple of movie theaters that would buy those from you. I think you have a solid Top 12 show. Now clean clean clean to stay their.

Blue Stars – Why are the DCI judges picking on you? I thought you guys had a much more accessible show than last year’s “magic act”. But if you move across that scaffolding watch your dress and cover. Spacing issues up that high can be killer distraction.

Blue Knights – I was so excited that you didn’t have one single “tide died” flag in your program. Still you have the oddest flags in DCI.

Madison Scouts – I kept getting choked up during the middle of the program, I had to keep telling myself this is only a drum corps show don’t get carried away. Ok, I lied I said I wouldn't cry any more. Your ending was a little loud “thank you's” were heard from some of the fans … I have no idea what they were talking about. I thought business men wore dark suits in New York? Or is gray the new black? JZ and Alisha Keyes called and they want their song back, because you NOW OWN IT!

Boston Crusaders – Well well, some music I actually knew. If you’re going to whistle coming on the field, put a microphone on ya, I could barely hear you. Where was the BLOOD? I’ve never seen wounded Airmen without blood! Come on this is DCI put on your war face.

Santa Clara Vanguard – What’s up with the Plain Jane flags? Solid yellow? Huh? Did your order not come in? Drum line was smoking – only real Devil I saw on the field. Horn line, I think you’re over your head. I think I need to sit up higher to find out why random horn players just take off running for no reason during the program.

BlueCoats – In a song you just described me with your opener,“I’m a creep, I’m a looser” best horn part of the night, of course I like Radio Head. Guard, please get rid of the color blind uniform/costume maker you used this year – those guard uniforms were just ALL wrong. Horns stop by the gas station on the way to Indy to fuel up, because you’re running out at the end.

Phantom Regiment – Oh how I love to hate on these guys from Rockford Loves Park. I hate the word LOVE in anything. Ok, you had the best horn line of the night, drums were not as bad as I thought they were going to be and the guard was 100% rock solid. New uniform with some type of coat of arms in the middle was a little small and those mirrors kept distracting me; you should have made that coat of arms thing bigger!

Carolina Crown – How many times are you going to play Queen before we all get sick of it? You’re like Madison with all those Maliguna songs they played. I was hoping to not like this show, but it works. It has a very cool hip vibe all it was missing was the smell of that wacky tobacco stuff we smell at rock concerts and you would have me. Oh BTW tell Jimi Hendricks Jr., he needs to throw that rifle higher at the end on top of the scaffolding he’s on. If he’s not careful he’s going to bust a score board one night. Oh one last thing, for finals the guys you surf over the horn line, put them in a judge’s uniform! That would be awesome if you could get a judge to crowd surf!

Cavaliers – Ok, I hate you! I’ve been humming and singing Nature Boy all day. I can’t get it out of my head! I didn’t know Nate King Cole recorded that song. Taught me something new. See this old fart can learn a new trick. Guard this year wins the “extraordinary” costume award, and those stilts are nothing short of genius! I thought for a minute I was watching “Avatar” again. Oh those little feathers in the headgear of all the guard guys, I wish I could have seen their expressions when that uniform was unveiled. I’m sure they thought … “OMG you gotta be kidding me, I’ve gotta wear that all summer.”

Cadets – shame on you! Tearing up a perfectly good baritone horn just for effect! Now if you threw some saxophones and flutes on the field that would have been WILD! I would have hated to be your drill writer keeping all the red guys and white guys in their own little groups like you did and then alternate red/white red/white all throughout the show. I thought for a minute you were about to pull a Phantom Regiment on me and play “Amazing Grace” the way they did OMG that would be the deal for sure for us old farts. All in all George I think you found a show that perfectly suits you! I liked it. Ok I said it now sue me.

Blue Devils – WOW that guard loves those wild colors don’t they. Black and white and pink, ok I didn’t know those colors go together. BD’s new uniforms are a departure from conservative for sure … two white stripes on one pant leg – you need to send those back to FJM and get one sewn on each side. Nice old school throw back in your show to Burt Baccarat … one fan liked it, he yelled out “Thank You”. I bet the LOWES guy in Concord CA loves seeing you guys in May when you want to buy show props. Next year if you buy the middle section of the fence you got post for this year you will get a 5% discount! If you moved some of those cubes out the way you could march and move around more like the Cadets and Cavies.

If I was judging the show last night here is how I would have judged it ..;. You don’t need no scores.

    1st - Cadets

2nd – Tie Blue Devils and Cavies (I couldn’t make up my mind)

    4th – Carolina Crown

    5th – Phantom Regiment

6th – Blue Coats – and no one explained the “BLOOOOING” on the PA last night either YEA

7th – SCV – Devil is in your house but he didn't go down to Georgia

8th – Tie – Boston and Madison (I was going to put Madison in front of Boston – but I love a good war)

10 – Blue Stars – Brass line is really solid

11 – Blue Knights – I watched I listened and you are exactly where you should be

12 – Hometown Favorite – Spirit of Atlanta – I would love it if they would play “Let it Be Me” as a warm up!

    13 - Troopers

    14 - Glassmen

    15 - The Academy

    16 - The Colts

Love me or hate me I speak my opinion. THIS IS MY OPINION, THIS ONE IS MINE, THERE ARE MANY LIKE IT BUT THIS ONE IS MINE.

    At Ease!

Fear not RBarron, that baritone had been run over by a soccer mom who was picking up her kiddo at the school where the Cadets were rehearsing.

  14. I'd trust a judge over anyone here on DCP. Also, just because BD's show might be easier (which I think you can only say that as far as drill goes) doesn't mean that they're not as talented as the rest.

I know a lot of you don't like repeat winners, but get over it. BD is one of the most mature corps out there, and that's why I believe they do so well. That, and they have the staff who knows how to win.

With all due respect, although I am a drum corps neophyte, while I certainly agree that BD probably has some of the most talented and mature musicians on the field and I absolutely have no issue with repeat winners when that win is earned, an easier show as far as drill goes is an easier show as far as drill goes, which in turn makes it easier to play flawlessly.
