  1. I had a chance to at least audition for Madison in 93 but marched Spirit instead due to feelings of loyalty. Wasn't a great year and I always wondered what could have been. Why I didn't audition for 94 or 95 which was my age-out year I'll never know. ANyway my 1st point being don't regret not going for your favorite corp. Point 2: GO FOR MADISON THEY'RE BACK ON THEIR WAY UP!!!

  2. I really enjoyed most of the shows this year including the top 5. My favorites were Phantom, Madison, and Carolina Crown. The only ones I didn't really get into being SCV and Glassmen, but I was still really impressed with ALL of the 6th to 12th place finishes and thought they for the most part had the more entertaining shows. This was my favorite show from Boston in ten years for sure and maybe my favorite show from Blue Knight ever. Lots of variety this year. All shows I will for sure be watching again to see what I missed. All in all I thought it was a pretty great year!

  3. the star show was the best part of the night - coherent melodies, musical phrases - after devs and cavies it was a stark reminder of how much more musical and entertaining drum corps was back in the 80s/90s.

interesting to note - the video montage of Star showing the audience at finals back at Camp Randal - entire front side both decks completely full -

compare that to the audience at prelims last night - there were what, maybe 8-10K people at Indianapolis last night?

Although I liked both the Cavaliers and Blue Devils shows this year, I agree with you here. Could Star of Indiana competing as a world class corp again be what saves DCI? How ironic indeed.

  4. What was different from what they do 10-12 years ago that isn't now?

It's fricking marching band. It's just a bunch of people running around on a football field twirling things and tooting on things.

This serious red-faced back in the day stuff....ugh.

Wow, attitudes like this from drum corp fans really sadden me. All I know is when I was first exposed to drum corp in 1989 I was instantly hooked and could never ever get enough. As a brass player I was in awe of the power of the G bugles and couldn't wait to be a part of the activity BECAUSE it was something different I couldn't get at my high school. I was WILLING TO PAY TO BE A PART OF IT because it was different and special. My only hope is that enough current members feel this way to preserve what so many think of as an honorable tradition but sadly I guess most new members don't know the difference. I told myself after seeing the show in Atlanta this year that as long as Phantom and Madison are around I will always support drum corp but with the addition of woodwinds I will NOT PAY to see any shows because it will JUST be marching band. And honestly I really just wish the members could have as special an experience as I did when I marched.

And in regards to the "This serious red-faced back in the day stuff....ugh." ... Yeah, it will be interesting to see just how many dollars DCI loses when most of their "Legacy" fans stop giving them money. Way to go Mr. Hopkins, you're a real visionary. To clarify, I'm actually really impressed with MOST of the shows this year and I am actually impressed with the sound most corps are puting out so no I'm not a hater of new mellenium drum corps I just don't understand how one man can have so much sway over the entire activity.

  5. I have to completely agree with this. Some of the biggest drum corps fans I know are woodwind players and the lack of woodwinds on the field doesn't seem to bother them. I have seen woodwind march brass, guard, in the pit, and as drum major. If they want to march drum corps and already have a musical background the jump is not that incredibly difficult to make with a little practice.

As such, I don't see adding woodwinds as expanding the fan base that much. It would, however, cause many current fans to leave the activity. I just don't see what this can add.

    AMEN! I AGREE COMPLETELYWITH THIS.

  6. Just wanting to know why they've dropped off in the past 2 years, save drums. It seems like they've had very entertaining, crowd pleasing shows from 2003(which i consider their breakout year) through 2008.

2009, 2010, just aren't up to par with what I've come to expect from them.

Anyone have a clue? just a 2 year down period? what gives?

Saw the show in Atlanta and I thought it was classic Phantom. Beautiful show from beginning to end. No comparison to last year for sure and judging by the crowd response I'd say lots there would agree with me that it was very entertaining. The crowd went CRAZY as the corp entered the field after the opening statement in the tunnel and seemed equally impressed/surprised with the exit. The arrangements are fan friendly with lots of nice hits and the soloist is spot on. The drill might still be a little ambitious but at least they're trying to step it up and the visuals are very nice and work well with their theme. Of course I don't consider 03 to be a "breakout " year as you put it but rather another awesome show from a long line of awesomeness from my favorite corp. And just like Blue Devils deserve to win this year, Phantom deserved to win in 08 with no question.

  7. Having followed the activity since 1989 I'm actually more impressed with the scoring system these days. The fact that BDs AND Coats scores has remained consistent from the beginning coupled with the fact that the 2nd to 4th place spots have been SOOOO close with corps changing places very frequently tells me that the judges are being very fair and un-biased. Not to mention the fact that SCV is scoring fairly low for them like Phantom did last year tells me that "slotting" is not as prevelant an issue as some would have us think. Anyway, really it's nice to enjoy the competition aspect but not let it ruin the fun!

  8. YES.

After seeing this show in Atlanta I immediately wanted to see it again because I didn't feel like I could take it all in. While yes I love to be entertained by a show I also enjoy being challenged, and the music for this show does just that (although the La Suerta part is nothing more than a tease). Yes my fav BD moments are from the 90s and some of my least fav BD moments have been 2000- 2006 but THIS SHOW IS VERY MUCH AHEAD OF IT'S TIME and I am absolutely amazed out how well it's being performed by the whole corp. It was the tightest hornline of the night BY FAR envoking their 91 hornline ( this is a good thing to me!). NO-ONE else out there is even close to being on their level. I think most people need to watch the show again to at least TRY and enjoy it. Come on people, you really want BD playing jazz? Well THIS is jazz!
