  1. Well, if you get your way ... you'll probably lose this fan. It is the variety of styles and approaches that draw me to the activity. If every corps were marching the type of shows you like (I'm still not sure which ones those are as you spend most of the time here complaining, rather than praising), i would be bored to tears. Anyone who stops being a drum corps fan because they dislike one corps's style isn't really a drum corps fan, in my opinion. We all have shows we dislike. Stop with the histrionics regarding BD. They are master marchers and musicians and usually deserve to win when they do. You don't have to like them, but stop pretending like they are the downfall of DCI. That is utter bullcrap.

AMEN!!!! brother, couldn't be said better.

  2. Actually...i'm less disdainful of this years show than any since 07, because I like the Rite of Spring, and the original source stuff from Sebelsky.

But...the way it's presented just leaves me flat. Yeah they are clean as hell. We can debate the various reasons for that in other threads.

As such, I'm not a music major, so I don't really know the background on Rite. I do know the music...drum corps introduced me to it. But i've never had the time and desire to go find out what stravinsky was thinking when he wrote it.

And believe it or not, a lot of people world wide aren't familiar with him. You've proved what many are saying.....that drum corps has become this place where you have to be a music major to know this stuff. I can guarantee you many fans won't know it's the same guy that did Firebird. I know many drum corps fans that only hear classical music when they go to drum corps shows. I always found it hysterical that my dad's fave was Phantom, and I can guarantee you all he ever had on at home was the Stones and Pink Floyd.

god almighty, you really are the MASTER OF MORPH, as someone has previously pointed out.

  3. I find it sad fans have to spend hours researching shows so they understand what the hell they are seeing. I guess in your opinion, Madison, Crossmen et all that I mentioned are dumbed down eh?

It is a terrible thing that someone might learn something they didn't know? God forbid that one has to tax one's brain!!!

  4. I just finished watching some video of this year's BD show, and all I can say is, "Wow"; and, "Wow".

The first "wow" is for BD. That is one amazing show! DCI might want to police the Youtube videos with a light hand--having seen that video, I might actually consider trying to make it out to a show, if I could see that live. It's been a busy summer, and I wasn't planning on doing anything DCI related, but I might be moved to change my mind for stuff like this. I know Crown has a killer hornline this year, too, but come on--these cats are killing it!

The second "wow" is for all of the negative discussion I've seen on these boards regarding this show. For all of you that have been criticising them this season--this is it? This is the show that's ruining DCI? This is the show that I've seen referred to here over and over as "disjointed" and "disconnected"? I'm not sure what I was expecting to see, based on these comments (complete atonality and visual chaos, probably--it was made out to be just that), but it wasn't this. There is, in fact, a little shard of (ready for it?) MELODY that ties the whole thing together!

I am honestly surprised that a show so rich with artistry is being so poorly received by this community. I would guess that the vast majority of us that post here were/are involved in the performing arts on some level. If this is the show that puts it out of reach for you, if this is the one that's so out-there and over your head that you just can't take it any more, then I have a suggestion, if I may be so bold. Go get your your iPod, mp3 player, phone, computer, whatever it is you listen to music on, and WIPE IT CLEAN. You need to hear some new sounds. I would suggest getting a couple albums by the Thad Jones/Mel Lewis Orchestra. This will acclimate your ears to chords that have more than 3 notes in them. Nothing in the Devils show is much more advanced than what is on those records, and those are sounds that have been around since the 1960's. Pre-DCI. Pre-Blue Devils.

I have not generally been a big fan of BD lately. I think some of the criticism they have been receiving lately, regarding show design, has been deserved. This show, however, in my humble opinion, they hit this one out of the park. People who want the "old BD" back, I think you get some of that here. Of course, the show I'm reminded of is 1991--others that are clamouring for the old probably were hoping for 1992.

I agree with you 100%, but get prepared. You've just set yourself up for a viscious onslaught!!! Maybe you need to start a new thread for those who want to discuss the good things the BD are doing with this show and doing it so well. What do you say?

  5. I am definately begining to think that some people are incapable of separating out BD win jealousy ( present ) with the vast larger numbers of national fans that do not like the 2013 BD show because to them it is boring, confusing, or in some manner unappealing to them. They attribute the national audience reception to the fact that they " continue to win ". Are you incapable of understanding that a lot of the current audience displeasure is totally unrelated to the already acknowleged jealousy cadre of fans ? Or is such thinking perhaps beyond your ability to grasp such a current reality. Not a flame. I'm just curious, thats all.

And where did you find this "vast number of national fans?" I think your point it total B***S**T. Boring? confusing? unappealing? Why don't you try thinking about it. End of point. I have nothing more to say about it other than you are clueless.

    Goodnight.

  6. There's plenty of programs to like if you dislike BDs. Is it the fact that they continue to win that's bothering you guys? I'm beginning the think the reaction to their show this year may surpass the reaction to the Rite of Spring the first time it was heard. And now it is considered on the the most significant compositions in the history of music.

Cutting edge in the arts is never popular in it's time and usually in hind sight it become appreciated for it's contribution.

The other point I'd like to bring to attention is that no one is forcing the kids to perform with BDs. And it's no secret that BDs attract some of the most talented kids in the activity. I would venture to say that these kids are probably some of the more serious music students around and feel that this is the best place to be in order to futher their music careers. They obviously have bought into the BD philosophy and I doubt the crowd reaction, or lack of, has much affect on them. After all they are at the top of their game and seem to be staying there.

  7. 2008 Championships, the percussion judge ruined all concentration on the Phantom Regiment performance , and the DVD. They are not the show, but insist on being so !

I remember seeing that show and thinking that fool wanted to be the show. He should have been fired on the spot! And you're right, he ruined the show.

My question is, with all the dodging and contortions they are doing to avoid being run down, how much are they really hearing or seeing?

  8. Just getting technical but he was not, in any way, stereotyping a whole state. He wasn't saying every single person in the state of Texas is a radical right-winger. He was simply saying that it is known that Texas has a reputation to have more radical right-wingers than other states. I'm not saying he's right or not, just correcting you.

Thank you! And it didn't mean to sterotype the whole of the population. Just supporter of Perry and Gohmert. Oops, sorry again. Just kidding.

  9. I doubt it's your job to make anyone learn on here.

As for recouping cost, they already have the hardware set up to record the performances because they are later available on FN anyways. Really, the big overhead they need to account for is the bandwidth and the extra licensing costs from copyright holders....

Did it dawn on him that they may be trying to make some money?
