  1. I think that the Shapiro ship has finally sailed its last voyage and sunk with the Stars. Need to get a top notch guard caption head that can bring the talent and the creative maturity; not a crutch of props! BonVoyage Tarpon man!

I'm willing to give Sullivan one or two more years.

Not too impressed with the job the visual staff did, either! They were definitely "out of step" with things!

Drum staff; retain, retain, retain! They got the job done and have that section on the right path!

Yeah, I'm griping; but I really, really expected more from that corps. The show concept was awesome; but, in the end, it just didn't climb the ladder as everyone was hoping. It's my hope that the talent will stay with the Blue Stars and not leave. It's also my hope that actions will be taken and evaluations will take place to get the corps up to the level that a lot of folks would like.

    what is your marching experience?

  2. No it wouldn't sound exactly the same as the original, so what?

its almost like you are saying that the original should have used and instrument instead of voice... I'm sure that part of the reason the Cadets picked Angels in the Architecture was the vocal part from the original. To say that the original vocal part of a band piece is too much for a drum corps show is just silly.

  3. I would love to see what the judges would do at Prelims if this corps did not bring out the scaffolding and just marched the show really clean without it. Would they just give them the same old "mailed-in" scores, or would we see a serious shift in their placement?

I don't think their staff would have the ba!!s to do this, but it would be interesting to see what would happen.

seriously? You're questioning if this staff has ba!!s? They have put together top notch shows at least 3 years running that are always top 5 in difficulty. That my friends is ba!!s. The only reason you or anyone else thinks that the scaffolding is limiting is because that old fart said it at the theaters broadcast for the first show.

  4. Blue Stars - Still ok, but no where near the stellar design Blue Stars have been bringing since 2008. Way too much sameness through this show, and the visual program is far too compact

    Harvey

I respect your opinion and agree with the design compared to previous years. But do people actually think that the drill is "that" compact. I think its great drill and it looks better the higher you are (the judges box).

  5. Best Cadets for all the reasons stated. The show has so much going for it. Very well thought out.

Another Best for me was CC. Love love that show.

Worst. Teal sound. I have a different word for your sound but the censor here would spike it.

Another Worst is Blue Stars. Love,Love the show from a design point and from what I heard of your hornline it rocked. Probably my favorite visual show of the season. Those freaking amps and synthesizers ruined your show for you. George Hopkins figured out this year you do not need to go overboard with all the fluff. Just shut up and play.

isn't this thread about show design???

  6. Drum corps shouldn't be fun, it's hardcore, intense and fiery. Visceral. Any time I see drum corps on the field dancing and hooping and hollering it makes me sick to my stomach (that includes my own corps, before anyone feels like calling me out. BAC 02 with the dancing and crying, that #### needs to be banned from the activity.)

    you. are. wrong.

  7. Their brass is incredible. Looking at recaps from their recent shows, including Atlanta (which I was at), I have no idea how they're being scored so lowly in brass. I love Spirit's show this year, I think Boston is producing an incredible amount of sound, Blue Stars and SCV have two of my favorite shows of the year, and Madison is Madison - loud and entertaining. But I don't believe ANY of these corps are achieving the sound that Blue Knights are producing this year. They're playing an extremely challenging and technically demanding book on a level that, if they had the name of some of the corps in the top 6, would land them a top 5 finish in brass.

At any rate, if anyone from BK reads this, just know that regardless of the final placements for your brassline this year (which almost undoubtedly will be too low), that you have at least one impartial fan that is truly befuddled by the low scores you've been getting.

EDIT: just glanced at my signature, and I guess it's easy to see how I could look like a drummer with no real knowledge of brass. I am a french horn player by trade, and know my way around brass. Indoor percussion is more of a side project for me.

I agree that BK isn't getting enough credit and imho they as well as Blue Stars should be ahead of Madison and Boston. My only thing is that I heard more than a few hairs out of place from the horns Saturday in Allentown and I think that the difficulty of the book with their talent should not be reulting in missed releases and dips in sound this late in the season. But I am pulling for them. At least they had way less "brass ticks" than Boston...

  9. Worst:

Blue Stars: While I have not seen this show live I have watched it repeatedly on the fan network and made myself listene repeatedly to the the MP3. Musically this is the least interesting show of the top 17. There is no emotional range to any of the selections. It all pretty much sounds the same. This is all the more disappointing given the stellar design of their 07-10 shows. Visually they are limited to the front of the field due to the pretty useless ramps. They move pretty well but again the design keeps them between the 25's. Their guard has been amazing the last several years but this year they have been given nothing to interpret. My guess it Spirit will pass them shortly and they will be lucky to land in 12th. The kids are performing the best they can but they show has nowhere to go. Staff shake up may be needed for 2012.

So their bad show design is what makes the crowd stand up and cheer louder than a good 80% of the other corps????
