  1. Fill the gap.

That seems to be the biggest "DOH" in all of this.

Im trying to figure out what the rule submitters were thinking.

Didnt anybody say "So what about the 22-34 member corps?"

Up the limit for Mini-corps or lower the limit for Class A.

    Fill the Gap.

    Simple, straight-forward, logical.

Include ALL who want to participate.

Not one of DCAs smarter moves, IMO

  2. Yes - but to go back to the beginning, Shockwave was "birthed" from an attempt to start a Northern/Southern CA combined corps that would have been called "California Gold". We were going to have separate rehearsals and then merge up for one mother of a performance somewhere. When the Gold concept faded, the Northern CA faction formed Shockwave.

I won't elaborate on the rift that blew up the Shockwave senior corps, but suffice it to say the drumline walked out and decided to form a new corps which was to be named "Aftershock", but that name was dropped because it was too antagonistic to members of the former corps. (FYI this was the last time the corps that became the Renegades ever shied away from being "too antagonistic".) There were two suggestions for the new name...the first was the Barbary Coast Corsairs, a pirate theme the genesis of which was the fact that San Francisco is sometimes referred to as the "Barbary Coast". "Renegades" was suggested by my friend Jim Roscoe, who marched in a Renegade corps in Boston in the '60s or '70s. The vote was almost unanimous - something like 11 to 1 in favor of the Renegades. The snare drummer who voted for "Corsairs" walked out and was never heard from again. He already had a pirate themed website created and merchandising concepts at the ready. Too bad he was ten years too early with the concept, because pirates are finally hot.

Tim and I went to the DCI Pacific meeting together in 1997 to pitch the idea of a senior corps circuit to perform at DCI shows. He was always quick to point out that he is prominently displayed on the Rose Parade mural at John Wayne Airport in Orange County. He is also a huge fan of the "Lethal Weapon" movies (just ask Lee Rudnicki about that).

    Thank the gods, Renegades won.

I could not imagine the uniforms we would have to wear as the Barbary Coast Corsairs.

  3. Late 1999 - Was wearing my SCV Alumni polo and shopping at the local Safeway.

The bagger keeps giving me these "looks".

finally he says "What years did you march Vanguard?"

I told him. He had just aged-out in 99.

I congratulated him on his championship. and headed out.

I from time to time will wear my "Drum Corps is Evil" T-shirt to my favorite hangouts.

Some people will give me a blank stare, but some have that "knowing" look/smirk.

No ones come up to talk but my guess is that they marched DC or Marching band and were aware of the activity.

  4. I moved to Nothern Mich in 69, and was told about the local corps, the Ironwood Blue Knights.

But because I had to spend my summers in Calif., I never marched.

After graduating in 75, I moved to Northern Calif. to attend school and live with my dad.

My nextdoor neighbor came over and asked if I would like to see a drum corps show: 1975 Pacific Procession.

    (SCV, BD, 27th, Troopers, etc)

I liked SCV becuase they did Fiddler on the Roof. The musical I performed in as a freashman in HS.

After 75 tour, my nextdoor neighbor intruduced me to her son, an SCV Snare.

He and I became (and still are) good friends. As well as many other SCVers.

They started playing 73, 74, 75 DCI records. Kilties, Madison, Kingsmen, SCV. WOW

Once they found out I played trombone, it was over.

I was trying out that fall, no matter what.

I did, luckly I started on trumpet so treble clef and piston/rotor wherent that bizzare.

The rest is history and an addiction like no other.

PS - After making SCV and traveling to DCI Midwest, I was standing at parade rest waiting to go on, and I hear these voices calling my name.

I turn and there are a number of my friends from HS Band. Looks like DC was what they did when I was in Calif for the summer.

  5. On the gate leading to Mars (DBs practice field), it says "Welcome to Mars. Home of the world champion Blue Devils".

Unfortunately, I dont even think the mayor of Santa Clara even knows that SCV exists execpt possibly as "that Bingo place on Space Park".

  6. Similar to JoJo but ...

Returning Vets pretty much like the section they are/have been playing in.

We did have a 3rd Bari who decided to move to 2nd this year, on her own.

Bunch of late comers from last year are now in the sections they "should" have been if they had shown up earlier in the season.

but as far as auditions, the staff took the newbies to get a feeling of talent level and an idea of where best to place them. Thats it.

I auditioned two years ago, but that was a totally new horn staff and more of a get to know your talent level then "make it or not".

  7. Good camp from a horn perspective.

    Good numbers for December.

A couple of new baritones, a mello, a sop and contra.

Got the Ballad (Stairway to Heaven) and a draft of the opener (Adventures in Time).

Played the ballad with the pit on sunday. VERY NICE !

Rattled some windows with that one.

Horns sounded nasty on Saturday, but by Sunday afternoon, moments of incredable power and beauty.

Jim is working the magic right from the start.

Hornline is going to ROCK this year. Be Afraid, be very afraid.

Guard numbers where small, but thats normal for this time of year what with WGI kicking in.

Per day drum numbers were down (some people showed up one day but not the next.) But combined numbers were encouraging concidering the early season.

All in all, Very Encouraging IMO.

Anybody have a review of the evil open house?

    Details?!

    Mom
