  1. C-list hit it on the head.

Most corps that use Yamaha boards are using the iPad coupled to Studio Manager, but in a big venue like Lucas Oil it's a good idea to have someone down there in the event that something goes wrong or you lose the connection due to the distance between upstairs and where the board is on the field.

  2. Evan Vandoren- Madison horns

    Michael Terry- Troopers horns

    Rob Pastor- Cavaliers percussion

    Bo Sodders- Teal Sound/spirit horns

Matt Jordan- Phantom front ensemble arranger

Andrew Markworth- Crown front ensemble arranger

    Andy Ebert- Madison visual

    Steven Estudilo- Cavaliers visual

    Tim Jackson- Bluecoats drums/visual

    Sheldon Apo- cavaliers guard

    Tommy Allen- Cavaliers guard/visual

    Mike Bishop- Crown percussion

  3. The one of the few that I've missed this year. I don't believe content changes all that much night to night.

FWIW I think they finally nailed the content number tonight finally. The 100 yard spread on the impact instruments and the general demand and difficulty associated with trying to line all that stuff up exceeds BD's incredibly demanding book. Not discrediting BD by any means, but if crown can execute those nearly impossible ensemble moments well, the music ensemble and percussion judges should drop some 10's (assuming there aren't any other significant flaws.)

  4. I think Crown should be able to overcome BD though, but it's going to take a perfect storm of a panel composed of many of the people that judged night beat when the spread was 0.20 and people that seem to be willing to pop them the number (read: not most of the people that generally judge Saturday shows or finals week, unfortunately).

  5. Visual will be tough for crown- especially of Lee Carlson is judging Thursday and gets to put in his Blue Devils perfect 20 early, which will surely be followed by the rest of the judges in that caption following suit later in the week. This has happened every year the past few seasons so I don't see why it would stop now, especially since he popped them a 19.6 tonight.

  6. Most Yamaha corps are using the 01v96 mixing console, P5000S and P7000S amplifiers, CW218V subs, CM215V mains, and some other miscellaneous rack mountable equipment like the DBX drive rack PA+ or a preamp for some additional XML channels. All corps are using passive speakers with Yamaha with the exception of Cavaliers, who are using some new active Yamaha 2x15's for the speakers the split marimbas 1+2 and 4+5.

For synths you'll probably only see Yamaha motif XFs nowadays. Crown uses the XF8 where as cavaliers use two XF7's. Other non-Yamaha corps likely use a Roland Fantom or an 88 key midi controller that is hooked up to a laptop running Logic or Mainstage.

  7. I can understand that, but I think I will wait a season or two more before calling for the design teams' collective heads. Every team is going to have an off year where the fans just don't "get it" or the show just doesn't show up well competitively (See: Cavaliers, 2012). It could be argued that there are similarities between this year and 2010, but to be fair, 2010 was a different design team whose hearts didn't really seem to be "in it" for that particular season.

Just my .02 on that particular topic.

I agree for everything except percussion. Reeves and Welborn's team was beaten (with a decent spread, mind you) by Blue Devils B last year. If I were Fred Morris that would be completely unacceptable and changes would have to be made especially with how things are going so far this year...although I wouldn't have even given them the opportunity for this year, especially after watching a rehearsal and seeing first hand why things were so rough.

  8. You really think they're going to fall all the way to 25th and not make the Friday show? I doubt that very much.

Sorry, I thought the semis number was 22. I think that if things continue they way they're going they could be beaten by 3 or 4 Open Class corps and drop as low as 22 or 23... I would say it's not completely crazy to say that Surf or Mandarins couldn't catch up to them, but who knows until everyone is at the same show.

I feel bad for the troopers members that are force fed the Dave Reeves kool-aid and are then disappointed when their "superior in all ways" product fails to succeed competitively or with the DCI fans.

  9. Morris and Ottoes have some tough decisions to make in the next few weeks here...seems pretty blatantly obvious that David Reeves and whoever wrote that drill should be out of their jobs. After tonights performance it looks like Troop may really be on the cusp of not making the Friday night show if these trends continue.

My advice FWIW is to wipe the slate clean and get some younger blood in there and see where they can take it. I always think it's a bad idea to get "big name" guys that write for other corps to come in and design because you're never going to get their best ideas or full attention. Sometimes it works (like bones this year), but most times it doesn't. Get new blood in there that will take complete ownership of the product and make me get out of my seat and CHEER! I don't want to be lulled to sleep with "lush" melodies and extreme unnecessary musical nuance that may be exciting for music theory elitists, but not the general public that attends these shows.

  10. Here is what the Troopers need, IMO of course:

-Keep the admin and BOD because they are doing an excellent job of bringing the corps back and fundraising and helping to secure the future of the corps with the amazing bingo hall and corps office.

-Keep camp locations in areas with access to cheap(er) airports and lots of great talent.

-Write EXCITING!!!! and entertaining shows to captivate the audience and challenge the members- this will do wonders with recruiting in addition to the item above.

-Get a new percussion caption head and arranger. The books that Reeves writes are outdated and their technique programs is obviously not excellent given that they were beaten by the Blue Devils cadets corps last season, and haven't fared too much better thus far in 2012. I sat in on a rehearsal last year and the instructions were abysmal from Mr. Welborn...lots of unnecessary yelling and not a lot of how to fix what was going on.

-Stop doing boring shows that have some sort of lame BS connection to the west. If you want to do the western show, then fine DO IT! But don't do these boring shows for the sake of attempting to please the alumni. I'm certain that the alumni just want to corps to succeed and do well- just like any other corps. Would they like to see the traditional things that make the troopers identifiable? Sure- but I'm sure they would gladly forego halfassed attempts at western themed shows in order to make their corps a annual finalist.

Scoring better seems to be done in two parts these days:

Part A: Write more contemporary and exciting shows that engage the audience and help you to score better. Part B: Said exciting show will attract more attention to the brand during the season and then bring more talent to audition. Rinse and repeat.
