  1. Some of the best support anyone can give is to show up early on Thursday and make lots of noise for the kids! Putting your best show of the year on the field for "10s of people"...yeah...

Agree completely. I attend prelims day from start to finish and give every corps the same level of attention and recognition(with the exception of a slight increase for my favorite corps and shows that really grab me).

  2. Does anyone have info about which Open Class corps are planning to have souvenir booths at the marketplace during World Class action in Indy?

Thursday at prelims is the only show including OC corps that I am able to attend this year and I like to support some of these corps with purchases when I can.

  3. The only thing I find weird is when there will be big score swings one night to another. I know different judges see things differently, but when a corps can swing 2 or 3 points in one night, or over a full point in a caption or sub-caption, it's a bit strange. I know none of it means anything until the first regional, but it is strange to see when looking at scores.

Lack of calibration between judges - that's the real deficiency, not reduced panels.

  4. but not a lot of ideas go out from drum corps to the outside world.

To see the influence of Drum Corps on the "outside world" we only have to look as far as high school marching bands. Many people who would never consider attending a Drum Corps show will see their local high school marching band five or six times every football season.

Design elements, marching styles, musical selections, etc., etc., etc. that start in DCI shows make their way out to high school marching band shows fairly quickly.

  5. Is it me, or is this activity becoming more populated with smokeshows? I'm particularly looking towards the guard. How come gals of this caliber hardly ever march in marching bands?

They DO march in marching bands. Main difference is that many of the DCI guard members are college students. The guard in most marching bands you encounter are in HS. An attractive 22 year old will always project a very different image than an equally attractive (for the age) 14 year old.

  6. Entertainment value is in the eye of the beholder

    execution is not

you can't judge what you like more which is why art should not be judged.

You CAN judge skill, execution, technical excellence, design quality (different than entertainment value!) etc.

    This.

I was hugely entertained by the Surf show yesterday (halfway up almost on the 50). It was a great crowd pleaser (and captured the essence of Bridgemen perfectly). But it lacked the design and discipline to score well, IMO (and that of the judges).

It's not always about the score - kudos to the Surf staff for creating and to the members for executing the type of show that helps draw in new audiences. Once drawn in by the entertainment value, many grow to appreciate the whole realm of Drum Corps shows.

  7. Having been in the stands for all the shows yesterday, the only group that I think was significantly short-changed in placement was Oregon Crusaders. They were every bit as good (design and execution) as The Academy so they should have been 15th or 16th, IMO. A few other minor swap X for Y (one place up or down), but that's the glaring one to me.

  8. You are correct, same sheet, just taking into consideration of class. Verbiage is the same. No one knows what the drop will be this year. I guess 15-17 point drops in the top open corps.

In the past, a good rule of thumb for converting OC scores to WC sheets was to multiply by 80% (the old OC sheets had only four boxes - top of box 4 was 100 on OC and 80 on WC).

With the new sheets, we just have to wait and see how it goes. 80% of last night's scores would put Oregon Crusaders 19th in prelims (top 4 OC corps making semifinals with Pioneer being the only WC to miss out). At a 90% conversion (not likely, IMO), Oregon Crusaders would jump to 11th and 7 OC would progress to semifinals (but that would involve Gold beating Jersey Surf - boy would THAT light up the WC boards!).

  9. When it comes to the non-major shows throughout the summer, I think they should get rid of the lowest scoring to highest scoring schedule and intermix the Open Class and lower placing World Class corps. This could pose some issues, but wouldn't it be cool for some of these groups to perform after a higher placing corps and have a larger audience?

You'd still have to have a notable corps going on near the end or you would have a mass exodus perhaps but I think it is doable.

Why stop at the "non-major" shows? Why force fit the "notable" corps going at the end? Randomize the order at EVERY show and let the chips fall where they may. If there's a mass exodus after PR and before Legends, shame on the so-called "fans."

As someone who attends DCI Preliminaries and enjoys every show (from Spirit of Newark to the final corps of the night), I would love to see some sort of randomization.

The biggest potential "drawback" - the judges would have to score based on what they see/hear RIGHT NOW - not always "leaving room for the higher ranked corps to score higher, later." Could open up a whole different set of scoring/judging discussions.

  10. So, how would the Lehigh Valley Iron Pigs do against the St. Louis Cardinals? How would the Albuquerque Isotopes do against the Texas Rangers? Inquiring minds interested in conjecture want to know!

    Poor analogy.

The Iron Pigs would beat the Cardinals occasionally. The Isotopes would get a few wins against the Rangers if they played often enough. In sports, a "lesser" team can sometimes beat a "better" team.

In Drum Corps (and other judged activities), the "lesser" performers will NEVER beat the "big-time" performers.

  11. From what I've been able to gather, the color guard was late because they were held up at a gate by officials. All a big misunderstanding.

If true, there should have been no penalty. A delay caused by officials is beyond the control of the affected Corps.

Penalties are for violation of the rules by the Corps, not for errors by show officials.

  12. Past performance is not a reliable indicator of future returns.

Except in competitive activities where placement is determined by judges. It happens all the time in gymnastics, diving, figure skating, etc.

Just like it happens via "slotting" in the Marching Arts.

Judges are humans - complete integrity doesn't prevent at least some level of pre-conceived level/quality play into how a given performer is viewed.

  13. It's impossible under the current system to use objective scoring. The judges can only grade each subcaption in tenths of points.

So you agree that the problem is with the SYSTEM.

If there are clearly defined OBJECTIVE measures available, why shouldn't a particular judge be able to give the exact same score to two (or seven) groups. Equal achievements should get equal scores. The "one score, one corps" concept is inherently flawed.

  14. You have to understand that they have a very hard show that is not being executed this early in the season. Once they clean it up they will blow some minds. People are quick to point out the open class corps that beat them last year, the only problem with that senerio is that they are scored on differnt books. If the Cascades and the Oregon Crusaders, Spokane Thunder wher scored on the same books, the Cascades would have beaten them by many points. They are only 17 point away from the top 12. Not a problem.

Last year at Championships, a reasonable estimate of OC scores on Thursday was 80% of their scores from OC Finals on Tuesday. Using the same calculation, last night's show in Boise would have produced the following scores on the same sheet (rounded):

    Oregon Crusaders - 59.10 (from 73.90)

    Thunder - 53.75 (from 67.20)

    Cascades - 51.10 (actual score)

While not quite the "ten pointing them" of an earlier post, Oregon Crusaders would surely be dominating Cascades if they were scored on the same sheets. Simple conclusion - Cascades are not currently up to the standard of the other Pacific Northwest corps this season. This is a clear example of performance level having ZERO impact on classificaiton.
