  1. interesting since WGI requires all guard units to submit their rep/songs and then hire copycat to do all the licensing.

You're right, sorry. I wasn't detailed in my response, with new streaming laws and restrictions in place they wouldn't be able to keep their head above water with a paid subscription based service.

  2. Not sure if anyone mentioned this, but they went this route because of licensing, especially with WGI's Color Guard performances. A lot of those winter guards don't obtain the proper rights for their shows since they're not exactly performing them, therefore it would be illegal for WGI to charge someone to watch those performances or collect advertising dollars from it.

They are taking a big loss since they can't advertise on the youtube videos they are posting, but in the end the audience and fans win, which I think is definitely a lot more important. This helps with their exposure which means growth which also means more money through different avenues. So when you see somebody post on social media asking for donations, even if you're a big fan of that orgniztation or not, it's important that you pitch in even if it is just a few bucks.

There have been rumors about DCI changing their Fannetwork set up, but I don't think they are going this route, in fact it would be the opposite.

  3. First Crown did it. Then OC did it. And now Cascades. Why does everyone love that style of hat so much?

Southwind, Blue Knights & I'm sure various competitive high schools have been the ones who paved the way for that style.

“Just because something is traditional is no reason to do it, of course.”

  4. Reminds me a little of Boston's new uniform.

    Can't say I'm a huge fan

    1. Are you kidding me? I'm about to quote you and every once referring to Boston "OMG they both have red, They're the same". The only difference in Boston's new uniform from their old is nothing but with a few bondage straps on them and their huge logo awkwardly placed on it.

    romney.gif

I dont think I like a single new uniform this season. Sigh...

    A conversation I had 20 minutes ago.

Person 1: "Man, these new uniforms are blowing up on twitter and facebook."

Person 2: "I wonder what DCP is saying"

Person 1: "It's DCP, it's going to be the complete opposite. There will be one person who says, "I don't like any of the new uniforms, uuggghh"

We both get on DCP and big smile shines upon are faces.

I think someone had stated somewhere that the colored panel could be changed.

I see the DM's uniform clearly, but amongst what I assume are brass/percussion uniforms, two have a black cross, one has a gold cross. I wonder what the differences mean.

I like the guard uniforms. The detail is very nice.

Yup, someone pointed it out. They're all just mirrors, it's just reflecting different things.

I think we're seeing the effects of Crown's uniform on other corps.

Some are taking risks I don't think we would be seeing had Crown not come out of left field with last year's uniform.

As for Phantom's uniform, I think it was jjeffeory who first pointed out that the white portion looking like it was removable. Now every time I see photos of Phantom I can see it.

    :Start Sarcastic Rant:

YUUUUP, it's all about Crown. It's like Crossmen's instruments were 10 years old or anything.

Since these shows seem to be the same I feel like Glassmens guard was more in the character for a gypsy.

    217_629248533799_2235_n.jpg

I will admit. Their guard did a great job at getting into character. I remember some of those shows. But no, just no. You can't make that call, especially when Crossmen have only performed in their uniforms once. Also google "romani people", and then compare the uniforms.

The Crossmen kids look depressed to be wearing those. They should have had them at least smile.

It's a rule at Crossmen, you're not allowed to smile while in uniform.

So many unusual uniform decisions this year. It's as if the people at Crossmen, Phantom, Blue Knights and Boston said "how can we take what Crown and BD have been doing incredibly well for years but make it really really bad?" I just don't understand. Even from the pictures Crossmen's new outfits look kinda cheap. Am I being too harsh too early? I do feel bad for responding so negatively so quickly, but my immediate reaction for a lot of these reveals is confusion and disappointment.

    Start Sarcastic Rant:

YUUUP. I'm sure all the Crossmen people were like "Let's do what BD and Crown do, because we want to be like them, forget that we need a new uniform."

    End Sarcasm

  5. Is it even possible that members who have been going to several camps by now don't know what the show design is?? How can you rehearse for that long and not know what the show is??

I guess I get it, but is this really where we're at? Isn't something like this WAAAAAY beyond overkill?

  6. As we begin a new year of drum corps, for the first time in almost 20 years I am just not excited about this upcoming year. Last year, with the exception of SCV … I was bored. Sure, oooh, look at the pretty colors and the strangeness of it all, but to be 100% honest I didn’t get a lot of it. WAY OVER MY HEAD or I’m just not taking the right kind of medication.

I am tired of slick tricks by the guard and pre-recorded audio clips that are supposed to enhance performances - they don’t - it’s all become a distraction. Maybe if a staff member from a corps would sit down and explain it to me all I might get it, but that’s not going to happen. Used to in the “olden days” Drum Corps World Magazine would explain what’s going on, but now it seems like you have a musical arts degree to understand a show.

It has all become so bland for me that I have become bored with drum corps. I really don't care why type of instruments the corps are playing, it's all good in my book. However, the antics of the DCI judging system never ceases to amaze me.

Typically I travel to one large regional show a year. Airfare, hotel room, dinners out, tickets, souvies., etc usually cost me $1,000 or more for the weekend. Maybe I’ll just by the DVD and call it a day.

Does anyone else feel this way and if so why?

How about you don't spend $1000 going to a show, I feel like your bored because you're not getting your monies worth. Don't get me wrong, everybody can spend their hard earned anyway they choose, but still. Also 20 years is a long time to be doing the same thing. I really loved some of the shows last year, for example Crown. I thought their rendition of Philip Glass' work was great.

While I did like shows from this past year I am still not a fan of indoor regional shows, I think they're just boring. How about make a trip to an a smaller show with a good line up? I've been in the audience in many shows and the smaller outdoor shows with a big fan base always have this great energy.

If that doesn't do it for you, then maybe use your funds by donating it a corps, or setting up a scholarship fund for different member? Maybe that will be more fulfilling?

  7. Its Called a BAND!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Its a Sad Day for Drum Coprs and I guess a good day BOA.

I guess we can just chang ethe name to

    "Drum and WHATEVER Corps"

Whatever is usally not a good thing!

I love how people think BOA (Music for All) is somehow benefiting from it. Like there's some fat cat wearing a monocle and a top hat reaping the benefits and laughing all this money into his gullet and his stomach grows, then he just ends up regurgitating it like a hair ball and then eats the money hair ball again. They are two separate companies, one is a much larger company (Music for All, I think) that deals directly with high school competitions while the other is the big leagues. The argument for the rule change and any other that may come up, is this is all about execution of performance and not what is being performed.

  8. ....and a tv show as well.

    It's official y'all!

....Nick validates some rumors about a project of his that longtime fans of the triple threat will be super happy to hear: “Drumline 2″ is in the works, y’all! Is it too meta to request a marching band to celebrate the news?

In the video, C Tha God asks Nick if there’s any truth to the gossip that he’s planning a follow-up film to his 2002 flick, “Drumline.” Nick admits that the sequel question comes up often, and takes the opportunity to drop some big news. “I can announce it now,” he says. “It’s officially happening.” Man, Charlamagne really knows how to get inside people’s heads!

Since 12 years have passed since the original film premiered, though, Nick admits he has no intention of acting like a college kid in the sequel. “I’m not in it,” he insists, adding that he’s only planning to produce, and even hopes to take “Drumline” to the airwaves, as well.

“My whole goal is to do the ‘Drumline’ TV show,” he says. So, when is the Nick Cannon Network launching?

Check out the video from the interview here: http://remotecontrol.mtv.com/2014/01/29/charlamagne-and-friends-nick-cannon-drumline-2-sneak-peek/

  9. Either this topic has fallen off the main page, or no one here is a sports fan.

    http://deadspin.com/orlando-gets-stadium-approved-for-21st-major-league-soc-1450758994

2015, if DCI isn't back in Orlando, then it's got issues.

    1) cheaper stadium fee than the current dump of a stadium in Orlando

    2) more intimate

    3) not a dump

    4) did I mention it's not going to be a dump like the Citrus Bowl?

    5) less chance of being mugged in the parking lot

    6) it has a less chance of flooding when there's rain

    7) WrestleMania won't rip up the field the week prior to the show

    8) The giant drum corps fan base in Florida will be happy

All pros to the new stadium, but the biggest con: It's in Florida.

That's too many miles to go South, just to have to cross them again going back up North, where the closest show would be Atlanta. Unless there are smaller shows in North Florida before and after the Orlando date that would make the trip worth it.

Also doing drum corps in Florida is the worst.

  10. Overall, I see where the post is getting at. But it all depends on the person too. I've heard of cases where people stick it out with a corps that may or may not make finals, just to say they marched with that certain corps, and to be in that family. On the other hand I've also heard of people moving from corps to corps, and when they win a ring, they're done. Even if they have 2 or 3 years left before they age out,all that matters is they won the ring, and are moving onto the next thing in their life.

It is frustrating to see lower rank corps just being used as a stepping stone. I have no numbers to study, but I can guarantee large majority of the top 3 or 4 corps are made from members of lower ranked corps.

That's written beautifully. I would add that doing a little research and finding out who's treated well both on and off the field should be a big decision. Are they fed well so they can rehearse and perform well? Do they actually get free time? Is their average work day more akin to a death camp or an educational master class?

The more the "stepping stone" mentality of the not-top-6 can be eliminated, the better the activity gets. If you march Blue Knights, march there because you want to and it's a good fit, not just because you want to chase a ring. Corps shouldn't be your ticket to greener pastures.

I know corps still often refer quality students that have been cut to other groups who can use them. Hopefully kids take those offers if they're a good fit. With Boston, Spirit, Blue Stars, Troopers, Oregon, etc. being so good these days, maybe we'll see a little more competitiveness and member retention across the board in coming years.

RContra: that would be a good study to conduct, especially for the feeding aspect of it. On the other hand though, it just depends on the personality of the person. While some corps noticeably do have more free time, and others have the reputation of being beat down, it's up to the person what they like. When I marched I wanted the full beat down experience, may have come close to getting it, but I wanted to see how much I could go through and still come out strong. I know of members of certain corps who sometimes complain about free time. They feel they paid money to get better at the activity, and if they wanted to take a vacation or road trip they would've done so themselves.

I think the level of the performance has gone up every year in every corps (even if the show designs may not have improved every year). I feel that things are going to be shaken up very soon in the next few years, and just because a corps has a certain name, doesn't mean their going to be guaranteed in the top 6.

(maybe BK wasn't the best analogy for "chasing a ring") :silly:

TL:DR - I just wish people would stop using lower ranked corps as stepping stones, especially when all these corps have great people and traditions tied to them.

  11. The first time I saw Crown's show I was pretty offended by it. Given the show title, I was expecting a show celebrating science and human advancement, but instead I see a show that celebrates everything it can't do. I REALLY don't like the counting, and I actually hate the narration (sorry if the guy who did that reads this). If you ask me I don't think a narrated story has ANY place in DCI. It covers a relatively weak ballad. Sure, their hornline was absolutely dialed in, can't deny that. But the music does nothing for me. Especially what they hid under the narration during the ballad piece.

I also did a little personal calculating and found that Crown's hornline is neither playing or marching for a full 26% of the show. That's appalling. I'm afraid in our eagerness for Crown to finally beat BD, Crown became them. Also, I'm not one of the old DCI fans. I'm not even 20 yet, and was only introduced to DCI just 3 years ago. So, this isn't someone pining for the days before b-flat trumpets and amplification.

Anyways, this opinion has not been well received around the internet or among my friends. Given the huge negative backlash, I'm looking for someone who could explain this show to me in a way that would make sense of it all. Anyone who could address my concerns above would be really appreciated. Thanks guys.

ALSO, please don't comment telling me I'm stupid or just don't get it. This is me taking that under consideration and hoping to gain more understanding. Thanks.

It's simple. It was all because the feels. No other corps really gave me any.

  12. Where do out of towners park their cars during tour?

At SCVC, they parked them at the corps hall (and around it), BD/BDB parked their cars at Mars. Just a random thing going through my head.

Never had to experience it, I was always dropped off and left my car at home.

All members I've seen before have done the same.

  13. I was just thinking about this and I've never really seen this on dcp.

Are there any band directors or school admin, school board members, athletic director, anything that are part of a school that would be willing to help with housing a corps.

Can I get a roll call?

I know housing is getting tougher and tougher every year, so this would be a great tool to help corps get down the road. Even if you're already hosting a corps for a show many the corps could pass by again weeks later for a rehearsal day?

    So dcp, roll call?

    Thanks.

  14. What was the worst is when the wifi on the staff bus goes out. I couldn't do anything. :P. (I never marched during the wifi bus days but I've heard that comment before)

But seriously anytime there was something wrong with the showers I was over it. I didn't mind the get off and rehearse days. But if the showers weren't working, there was only one, or the pressure was consistant of a dripping sink then I was over it.

  15. Well, tonight is the first big show (minus Pioneer for some reason) and I beliieve it is time for "the fall". By this I mean, someone, is going to place lower than most of us expected based on their performances thus far this season. Now, the real question is, who? Who is going to take the fall? Tell us who and why?

    RM

Well this is only based on finals ranking last year but the corps that will fall:

Cavaliers - Finally glad to see someone fall from the thrown. The show is not working for them at all, much less the past couple of years.

Troopers - Haven't seen their show but from what I've heard they're going to have a dip and freeze in that dip.

Glassmen - Finally freeing up that 11 spot for someone to grab.

Blue Knights - The lower placed corps are finally catching up to B.K. and putting them in their place.

  16. 4-There is no real competition in DCI.

Okay this might cause the most controvesary because I'm going to get tons of examples were corps A only beat corps B by 9/10's or how each years theres movement and this year the Cavaliers will finish outside the top 4 for the first time in decades. Sure all true, but what chance does the Colts, or Crossmen or even the Academy have of winning. I'm talking about finishing 12 this year and winning next year. NON, ZERO ZIP NADA. Only in DCI is that not possible. In baseball you get worst to first, baseball, heck even tennis once in a while but never DCI. But in DCI the top 12 run things. Maybe thats way theres been so little movement in the top 7. The major leagues want parity. It creates more competition. Who wants to see every football game win 35 to 7. But thats what we get with each show. If I see a line up of Cadets, Bluecoats, Crossmen, Surf I'll get the right order of finish 9.5 out of 10 each time. I bet most fans can pick the right order of finish for the next 10 shows, no real competition.

The answer is easy, contract the members for multiple years. The top 3 or 4 are mostly made up of members from 10-17 corps. That is a fact.

Also: I'm pretty sure attendance for Atlanta is still on the rise, San Antonio is rising and recovering after the whole switching of showsite mishap. So as long as the money is pumping in at this rate I don't really see end too soon.

  17. That being said, I have a question: Is putting the slower/slowest runners at the front of the breathing block considered hazing?

It depends on the attitude taken by the staff and other members.

If it is one of generally encouragement then not at all. Even if it is a slight harsh attitude, tough love, attitude (if the slow runner doesn't want because they don't want to try) then it's acceptable.

The only time I see it unacceptable is when the staff and members put down the said member and make them feel worthless., or make them do something that they're clearly physically unable to do.
