I remember when Tom Float taught De La Salle Oaklands and their percussion kept them in the game. I respect "caption integrity" over caption bleed-over. Keep up the great work, Lauren!
I remember my parents marching in Del 74 lol

If you stop supporting drum corps because you don't like the corps that wins, your priorities are all screwed up... sorry.
It's not that I don't support the activity... it's just hard for me to garner the support around the winner each year. I think we've lost our values in what we celebrate unfortunately.
My priorities are strongly with the corps, I think I'm more interested in the back lot this year... and maybe that's where my focus should be to continue supporting. 🤔
I am in no way saying excellence shouldn't win, it does every year! I'm just having a tough time with my enjoyment of what is winning I guess?
Open for discussion here as always...

I think BD and Boston are a lock for top 2. The battle for bronze is exciting, as well as 7th between BS and Cavies, 9th between Phantom and Mandarins, and those last two finals spots. I know people must be freakin' out right now seeing Troopers in that 12th spot. I think as long as they have a decent show tomorrow, that 12th spot is theirs cuz looking at the recaps, I think 2 judges gave Crossmen huge gifts tonight (10th in GE and 8th in brass??????). The Blue Knights are in trouble and need to perform their best show tomorrow to have a shot. My guess is Colts and Troopers will be performing Saturday!!!
Great night of shows!! Can't wait for tomorrow!
I think we have all seen that BK has been I'm trouble all season long. Such a head scratch for me...
As for the top we need new blood and if old blood wins its time for a sabbatical for me. I just can't see it ... it's the same as it ever was... I'm done with it winning while being so cocky and unappealing to me.
Not in any case to downplay the work being done there at all. They are a fantastic corps. I just wish they'd give us something new to win with is all.
Clearly they know they don't have to do that.

I think competing in open would have subjected them to the no woodwinds restriction. Nothing wrong about coming out as you are and popping a 78! They turned a ton of heads this week and will on Thursday too (presuming they're going on to Indy while down here).
Build! It'd be great to see more I in the DCI again. They are very much tipping thier foot in the water this year.
Oh to remove that sock and really compete!

What happens when Calgary Stampede scores in the top 25 in semis?
They are such a great program. So happy they went out to give it a try but it looks like they should have competed!! Stetson's and all!!

Yup. Two captions now.
Anyone know if Calgary Stampede was able to compete in Open tonight? They would have been 6th just a touch above Southwind?
We only have two corps this year and I'm gunning for both, when my parents marched Toronto, Ontario, Canada was the only city to this day to have two corps in DCI top 12.
We're starting again and the results of Stentors and CSB will help us celebrate with the newer corps.
Wish Calgary competed in open!

Feel bad for the performance after a weather delay. Time, wet slick field. Holds them back a bit I feel.
Can totally hurt inertia of the warm up and focus/ Hype as well.

Got your wish. A point higher than Allentown.
Cadets is really the story this year, other than Boston but East is the moment isn't it?
After the uniform that looked like a balsamic drizzle I had almost given up on how everyone packed up and went to Boston.
Cadets felt this for two years and now they sound so Cadets and I am so happy.
So happy to see them back.
Miss them and all the big corps in Montréal or Buffalo, us Canadians have had to travel this year that for sure...
But enjoying the experience of Cadets becoming Cadets again. Beautiful programing and a perfect fifth. If the Candide it!

Troopers beat Blue Knights consistently through 1987.
That flipped in 1988 when Blue Knights pulled ahead and
never looked back. I'm pulling for the Troopers to pull
ahead tonight!
Let's go Troopers!
Interesting history to bring up given all the flip flops this season.
Although I was quite precariously watching BK's slow start they seem to have found their way.
Troop has to really sell the drama of their program as their is so much theater built in.
Wishing good seasons and outcome for both 🙏

There were two “rituals” that were a given BITD. (1) Trooping the stands, after the corps’ performance the corps passed in front of the stands in parade formation saluting the audience. (2) Marching off the field after scores were read. You honored the winning corps by playing to them and saluting them as you marched off the field. Sounds trite but it taught us how to show respect to those we competed against.
sorry if this is off topic.
I remember doing this in the Canadian circuits up until the 2000's.
It was a way to honour those who took in your performance and your fellow competitors.
It's where

Folks,
As we are at the most active part of the season, and had well over 100 DCOP members viewing the Atlanta thread, it might be time to do something I have considered for a while: The corporate knowledge of DCP members. So -
How much (1) Drum Corps & (2) how much non-Drum Corps marching experience?
I will tally it up periodically as we go.
1995-2001 DCI
2009-2010 DCA
9 years... and still here vicariously living through talking about it lol 😆

Actually I just watched Little Rock and on multi-cam I saw a lot of individual confusion on the field, as though they tried to make way too many changes all at once. Lots of missing ticks and gaps. And you just have to hit straight lines every time. I also heard some pretty rough intonation. Hopefully the powers that be are trying to shore up final changes now so they can just clean from here on. Maybe add the chevron and kick out, but no more changes. Clean, clean, clean.
I really think this group knows what they are trying to do for this season.
Phantom top 3 is not in thier aim..
They are trying to do a new course of phase in thier trajectory... let them get it right as they always do and see how this pans out over the course of a planned program.
Much like Boston, this is a program that takes time.
I'm so happy to see regiment back at it... can't wait to see what their finals position this year brings them next year 🙌
Nothing good happens over night... give this corps time.
They always make it with a few years under their belt.

Block me for saying this if you must, but the amount of entitlement in this thread is disheartening. Regardless of whether or not you personally agree with a corps’ policy, it’s what the corps has decided to do. Questioning (or worse, going against) the policy when you KNOW it’s done with the members’ safety in mind is rather selfish.
Corps are not equipped with staffing dedicated to ensuring that visitors are maintaining an appropriate distance at any given time. The easiest way for them not to have to police this is to just close down rehearsals to the public.
Even pre-COVID this wasn’t unheard of—many corps had closed rehearsals for secrecy (adding new show elements that they wanted to be a huge surprise) or just for member focus/concentration.
I agree with you.
Sadly this pandemic has really shown who acts right on behalf of others and the truth is it isnt many...
Hopefully these corps can not get harassed by those who try to act against their expressed wishes.
They need to get over themselves and go to the stadium... open rehearsals will come back when theu don't pose as much of a problem as they do in this particular pandemic climate.

This is easier for me to understand. i believe Boston mentioned that they just don't have the manpower to police it. I get that.
Like I said, every corps has to do what they feel is best. But the idea of closing rehearsals is still a trend that worries me, long term.
I think @scheherazadesghost said it perfectly... it's still not a normal season as we have known them in the past. Covid is very much still alive and well.
I find it's like it doesn't exist when I am in the USA for work but with B.A.5 it is very much on the rise up here in Canada.

Every corps should do what they feel is best. I'm not sure how it's DCI's fault (or Dan Acheson's fault) that Phantom had an outbreak after Detroit?
Also, there's a big difference between corps kids mingling in the crowd, and fans sitting in a stadium during rehearsal. There is ZERO increased chance of a corps kid getting COVID from fans sitting in a stadium, unless there is mingling going on.
I'm concerned about some of these "mitigation efforts". I applaud any corps for wanting to keep everyone safe. I just question whether the things that are being implemented are doing more harm than good.
The first time I ever saw a drum corps live, was at a rehearsal. It's an experience I will never, ever forget, because it was my FIRST live exposure. Banning fans from rehearsals (especially if those fans are only sitting in the stands) seems like an elitist and short-sighted reaction to me.
Totally understand your stance here, I just think with so many corps being competitive this year, it's really not worth risking the backtrack on progression a covid outbreak will ultimately bring.
It's a hard thing for a corps to manage as well, they have never had to do this before in regards to managing fan attendance at rehearsals. It's a bit easier to jist close to all than manage I guess?

This is a great idea, but not many indoor arenas. Sadly Nashville would be out, which sucks.
Why does it have to be indoors?

Then maybe you can petition with the corps to change the sheets. The corps are the ones who create and agree to the sheets, after all.
I didn't realise this. Wonder whose opinions pgets weighted in those meetings... now I have to do some research.

I know we've had lots of these before, but I don't want to dig them back up. I'm hoping that people will put up pieces that have never-or at least, rarely-been done. Any genre is fine, and feel free to say which corps would fit best with the piece. My list, which I'll probably update from time to time.:
Orchestral pieces
Low Symphony—Philip Glass (any corps, please just do it)The Black Maskers-Roger Sessions (my favorite is from 18:30 on...would be a great intro to a show)
Wind Ensemble/Brass Ensemble pieces
Baron Cimetiere’s Mambo (thanks to Nikk for commissioning this one)—Donald Grantham
Trauersinfonie—Wagner (could be an instant classic for Phantom just like Elsa's Procession)
The Place Where Dreams Come True James Horner
Other
Our Prayer—Brian Wilson (Crown or the Cadets)Pretty sure Patriots did Low Symphony over 97-2003.

It's weird to me that Bluecoats aren't considered "midwest" even though they competed in DCI East.
They weren't around when Blue Stars were the best in the Midwest. I always consider them Midwestern?

This is not just for 2023 but how about maybe every 5 years having finals week somewhere else other than Indy. It was that way for the majority of DCI existence. No reason why Indy is set in stone.
contract through 2028 for indy.

I haven't seen the "sheets" in a long time, I believe someone had posted an older version of them years ago. But none of them included "show connects well with audience" on there. And why should it? It would reduce the variety of shows we get. There's room for both the crowd pleasing and esoteric shows in drum corps.
I do believe DCI had amended the sheets at one point that would allow the judges to "consider" audience response but it is far from a major set of criteria for GE. GE is mostly about how well a corps communicates their show concept and how well the pieces of a show fit together and how well altogether do they deliver the effect/concept. And with keeping that in mind, BD does all of those things well.
But what if that communication while clean is just boring (not much different from how they sounded the past 6/7 years) and not as exciting as other groups? That's where people get a bit phased I think.

Illinois State Fair- show was on a dirt race track not half as wide as a football field. Terri probably marched there too.
Had to re-learn drill using baby steps.
Alot of winterguard shows in Canada take place in Hockey Rinks, with no ice just the concrete below.
We have more of them than basketball arenas 🤣
