I'm hoping for one of the corps who hasn't performed yet to surprise us. Last year, Mandarins jumped from 17th to 13th and Boston jumped from 12th to 6th. So let's see a big move, or at least a good scare for this year's top 15, from Spirit of Atlanta or Oregon Crusaders or Pacific Crest or Jersey Surf or Music City or Cascades.

I think it's going to be Spirit Honestly.

  2. Magic of Orlando is not competing.

Had to mention one of the best sections ;) These color guards are fantastic!!! I am absolutely loving Crown, Bluecoats and Phantom! -All very different- Cadets are twirling it out like always and being their amazing Cadet selfs. I saw some clips of SCV and I have never been more entertained by Les Mis in my life! Everything they do is so elegant and perfectly detailed! Scouts are so strong, congrats on 75 years of brotherhood! Cavies... transitions.... you got it! Love their sabre book though. Still haven't seen BD, I'm sure they're giving me fierceness for days, still waiting for Boston to pick it up and pull it together already but I know they'll work it out and be clean, strong and at tape ;) Need to watch BK... Anyone else I need to keep an eye out for?? Yes, this is a great year for drum corps, but it is also a FABULOUS year for color guard!

  4. Wheres troopers?

    Pure speculation, obviously:

    1. Carolina Crown

    2. Blue Devils

    3. The Cadets

    4. SCV

    5. Bluecoats

    6. Phantom Regiment

    7. Madison Scouts

    8. The Cavaliers

    9. Sprit of Atlanta

    10. Blue Knights

    11. Boston Crusaders

    12. Blue Stars

    13. Crossmen

    14. The Academy

    15. Pacific Crest

    16. Colts

    17. Cascades

  5. There is a two time w.g.i. world champion colorguard from Vancouver, but sadly the decline of the activity in canada is largely due to non existent marching programs in high schools... its a tough sell.

At one several (years ago) there were a couple high school marching bands in Washington who competed in BOA. I don't know if this is still happening. Does Vancouver have potential talent to recruit? Is it possible that the guard and brass line will grow over the summer?

  6. Well said!!

I think what we're seeing is the fact that it's impossible for a judge to fully assess a corps in one viewing with a <5 minute break between corps, and a requirement to turn in the scores before the next corps is rated. They do the best they can and they are influenced by reputation and past scores (as well as the threat of losing their jobs if they disagree with everyone else). The very first show is probably the least influenced by the past, but it can't be entirely so. And in a lot of ways, the first shows are so rough that really the judges are going mostly on design, and the top corps have the staff that are best at designing for what the judges want to see, so they'll get the best benefit-of-the-doubt design-over-execution scores just from the fact that the top corps can get the top staff.

But corps *can* make progress, one way or the other. Crown had a pretty amazing rise from 2006 to 2009 after mostly hovering in the bottom half of finals for years, and they've managed to stay strong since, but it took three seasons to climb six spots in the ranks. But it takes consistency through the season and across the seasons to build up the staff experience and teaching methods and member excellence and general corps culture that cultivate top level programs. Pacific Crest has been rising through the ranks. Blue Stars had a very strong run up to 8th place. They very well could come back. But it's not going to happen in a single show.

  7. how are you pretty sure they are not modern? In regards to the visuals you say you haven't seen?timestamp='1371751303' post='3269783']

Well I heard SCV and their show is very traditional. I have not seen visuals but I am pretty sure they are not too modern. Cadets have a very traditional book but the moving scaffolds are not exactly traditional. Other than that Cadets do have a very accessible show.

  8. Blue coats looks hmmmm not made with quality? Why did they leave their old uni? Hopefully its todo with the show

So far, my favorites: Vanguard, Bluecoats, Troopers and Madison. Vanguard is just classy all the way. Bluecoats are very regal looking, Madison still looks very classic and unique...up close, the camo looks a bit strange, but when you are seeing the whole corps together, it looks great! Troopers....love how they've gone back to the 85-ish look....very nice!
