  1. I said it at the beginning of the year that the scout's' drumline was smoking! But at the time no one was giving them credit. Well, they are one if the best lines in drum corps! They could easily be top 3 next year. Lee Beddis and his staff have my deepest respect. And after talking with Robert Smith, if we think the horn line is awesome now, just wait. We haven't seen anything yet. Visual/guard I don't know about them. That's another story. Maybe it just takes longer. Or maybe those judges have a built in bias against Madison in those captions. But to me those two captions are the weak links for the Scouts right now.

  2. I went to the show tonite. Unfortunately, BK and Boston performed their shows in a light rain, but still were tremendous. Top to bottom I love seeing a show this time of year because all the shows are close to the best they are going to be-. I was bummed I missed Jersey Surf because I did not get there on time due to having to park a long way away but heard them play. Madison had the advantage of no rain, but a wet field....they stole the show. I say watchout for Madison this week. I do not think 7th for them is out of reach either.

I may be a conspiracy person. But, I don't think the judges will allow Madison or BAC to beat the Cavaliers this year. As under achieving as the Cavaliers' hornline is this year, Madison and BAC should both be ahead of them right now. But, neither BAC or Madison is a part of the G7 Click. Uh Oh, I should not have said that!'n

  3. I had to go back take off the green colored glasses and objectively look at the corps ahead of Madison. I looked at cavaliers and SCV. And it is true that although the cavaliers are boring and esoteric at times, they have a better overall visual package than scouts. SCV is not so boring musically and has a much better visual program as well. I feel that until Madison does get their visual program on track their horns and percussion will not get their just due scores.

  4. There has to be a legitimate reasoning why the visual staff is writing these less visually complex types of shows. But, what is it? Lack of talent, lack of money to field it, or just plain lack of creativity? I honestly don't think it's the latter. But, I do think however it is time to make a move to the next level.

  5. I haven't boo'd (yet), but to the OP - what other avenue is there for fans to express their displeasure with the product they are paying to see?

Email/erite specific corps? - that won't do anything so long as shows people don't like keep being awarded.

Stop going to shows? - that hurts the activity and the kids

Complain on DCP? - get out personal frustrations and may make an individual feel better, but does nothing to change the activity

The adults that run these corps aren't idiots. I bet its pretty safe to assume the BD's staff knows the audiences don't really like their recent shows compared to others.. so they have a decision to make - create a product that makes people jump out of their seats, or make a product that gets golf claps but wins. If these people are really as smart as we seem to think they are, shouldn't they be able to craft a show that accomplishes both?

If they/we think the boos are harmful to the kids, they maybe they should understand that and not put their kids in that type of situation, since they know for the most part what type of reaction their designs will get.

I liked the blue devils of the 80s and 90s. Certainly not the blue devils of today. I would be willing to bet that the blue devil design team could care less about the fans. They care more about titles and championships. I got a former blue devil drum major to admitt this several years ago. The sad thing is that DCI feels that the blue devils have earned the right to do these type of esoteric shows because they have won so many championships. They feel that the blue devils will be the corps to push the activity future. In reality they will push the activity, they will push it right OUT of a future if someone in DCI that has the courage does not step up and speak out really quick! If I am a young person and want to march in a corps and have only one shot to win a title, guess where I'm going? Concord, CA! I am so glad that I marched during the 80s when there was a more even playing field, real bugles, great recognizable musical books and more competitive parody.

  6. Sorry, but your post is too sanctimonious.

I personally have never booed, but I have shaken my head on a number of occasions. An entire generation (I'm talking to you Millennials) was brought up under a sissy system that everyone was a winner: "C'mon. Don't say bad things about nobody...everyone tried the same and had fun, so let's give everyone a trophy."

This is a competitive activity comprised of young adults--many of whom are going to be entering "real life" soon enough and they're learning some of the most valuable life lessons right now. They are NOT all winners and drum corps is a competitive activity with scores and winners and losers and stuff. They have staff who yell at them and make them run laps. Expectations are put on them and guys in green shirts and khaki pants tell them they did good or did bad.

Booing isn't the end of the world and it's not gonna hurt these young people. If it does, then they need to be booed more. Welcome to life.

Sorry for sounding crotchety, but this "everyone's a winner and don't hurt their feelings" sentiment is for the birds.

    Totally agree!!!

  7. I can't imagine there are any active or retired military who would be offended by the handling of the "dead" soldiers. If I remember correctly (and please someone speak up if I'm wrong), James Mason's own son is active duty military...possibly even special forces/ops.

You are correct his son is in special forces. And, there have been several veterans that have commented on the show and they love it!!! The fact of the matter is war is not pretty! At least they're not showing the reality of scooping up body parts and putting them in body bags!!! For the sake of reality, man up a bit!!!
