  1. Sometimes a melodic line doesn't showcase the performer, or generate any kind of musical or visual impact.

I would assume that a show designer is looking to showcase the strengths of their particular corps and they would want to write to accomplish that.

To me, smart arranging is writing a book that shows off your performers while not creating too much unnecessary risks.

I like original shows on the marching field and have never liked how phantom tries to bring pieces like Nessun Dorma to the field. Drum Corps needs to be doing new things, in every facet. If I want Nessun Dorma, I will watch the opera. I want something I havent heard or seen before!

  2. Then maybe he should reconsider referring to placements 7-12 as the bottom 6. What would placements 13-22 be in his context?

You're right. I figured top 6/bottom 6 was a good dividing line since its been awhile since the corps was in the 7-12 range.

If corps are "offended" by the "bottom 6" status, maybe that will motivate the right people to put a better product on the field. I think the fans would love it if the top 12 all had the same level of performance.

Since you asked, I will answer. While the Cavies have certainly won the big bowling trophy more than Boston, it would be disingeuous to suggest that the two corps have never "been compared" with each other, especially in the most recent decade in the DCI era.

    2012-Boston over Cavies (7th vs 8th)

    2011-Cavies over Boston (3rd vs 8th)

    2009-Cavies over Boston (4th vs 7th)

    2003-Cavies over Boston (2nd vs 6th)

    2002-Cavies over Boston (1st vs 5th)

    2000-Cavies over Boston (1st vs 5th)

While you probably didn't mean any offense, your comment regarding Cavies being uncomfortable around corps like Boston and Spirit are the reason while alot of people bristle at the apparent hubris of the "G7" corps, whether intended or not.

    No offense.

I think I am stating what the rest of the drum corps world has already stated. We are not used to seeing the Cavaliers as a "bottom 6" drum corps. At least not since 1984 and 1997. It's a competitive environment, everyone is working to create the best product they can, and each organization has it's own set of unique challenges that influence what you see come finals night.

Your above stats are correct... in this current decade only once have The Cavaliers and Boston been in the same conversation (2012). The other years? Not so comparable. Do you understand my comment now? Thanks for illustrating it, but I didn't say "never been compared to..." I said "foreign" meaning "out of the oridinary".

  4. The top level of administration of the Cavaliers, the decision makers, have taken notice of this past season. Changes have been made, and more are being made. 8th place doesn't sit well with this group of people, it's foreign to them to be compared to Boston and Spirit. No disrespect to those groups but when is the last time Boston and Spirit have been compared to The Cavaliers?

Sometimes you take a risk in staff, show design, rehearsal technique, etc... sometimes you hit a homerun, and sometimes you strike out. But they have taken note. Don't think for one second that the staff at the Cavaliers are sitting around going "Well, goodness.... I can't believe we didn't win. We had the sunglasses and everything..."

It's not happening. There is an agressive and ferocious hunger to "right the ship". People are getting hired and fired. It's serious.

Enjoy the success of the Blue Devils and Crown this season. They had great shows, and great execution. Come november, The Cavaliers will once again be working to earn your support.

  5. The Cavaliers have a DVD for sale called

"From the concert hall to the field" or something like that...

Their brass staff talk about how they take ensemble concepts from indoors and apply them to the outdoor activity. Lots of interview, exercises, rehearsal footages.

The DVD is more like an instructional video for future educators, not just fans. Very detailed.

A real hands on "day in the life of a brass staff"

Seriously? All the guy did was make a prediction based on, wait for it, past performance (the horror!). That's how most things in life work. Kindergarten this ain't.

You are pretty ignorant to think that past performance is an indicator of future results.

This isn't kindergarten. Whatever that's supposed to mean. Was that your tough guy quote from some stupid gang banger music video your mom told you not to watch?

So in your opinion are we to assume the following corps are also NOT competitive on the field:

    9 Madison Scouts

    10 Blue Knights

    11 Spirit of Atlanta

    12 Crossmen

    13 Blue Stars

    14 Glassmen

    15 The Academy

    16 Pacific Crest

    17 Colts

    18 Troopers

    19 Oregon Crusaders

    20 Jersey Surf

    21 Blue Devils B

    22 Vanguard Cadets

    23 Mandarins

    24 Spartans

    25 Cascades

competitive for a championship... Not competitive for who is "less bad". Competitive for a title.

  8. An organizations success or failures are directly related to its leadership. It's not the same corps it once was. It may not ever be the same again. Maybe it's another organizations turn. The Cavaliers have a lot to get better at before they can be competitive on the field. From rehearsal sites, to travel, to food, to recruiting, to schedules, to staff transportations to member accountability to rehearsal standards... It all adds up to what the fans see on the field.

Let's hope the off season is productive for them.

Their drill wasn't as hard as it usually is. One of the horn sergeants described it as being (drill wise) the easiest show he's marched yet. Gaines drill was no joke. We were always taught to make everything look easy. It seems to have worked well.

This response is a joke. I don't believe Caleb or Travis said anything like this.

The drill this year was on the verge of unreasonable.... The proof can be in the injuries and in the sound of the hornline. They simply could not march AND play the show. Watch it on video, these guys run! Compare that drill to bluecoats or Santa Clara.

  10. Reminder to those...

A brass judges evaluates brass performance from ON the field, up close and personal. He gets in the drill and evaluates members, and sections.

Cadets on the is a lot different than Cavaliers on the field. He is listening to things other than "loud/soft".

He is evaluating a few different things on the field than what you might be listening for up in the stands.
