I've now gotten a few reads on west coast corps... man, I must be getting old, but I'm really not digging any CA corps show this year... Ya it's early season, ya everyone is good and all, but I find myself getting board during all of these shows.

I agree actually. Got pretty bored. It's all good and it's designed pretty smart but it's just, boring... For some reason? Idk it's weird. BD and cavies were the most entertaining for me

  2. This is going to be a tight year no doubt. Top 5 will be super close unlike last year. I think that scv will end up taking it due to their execution but I think they really need to revisit fine aspects of their design to make it truly competitive for August. Thinking the closer will be the true life of the show hopefully.

I'm typically not a BD fan, but this year's show is the best I've seen from them in the past 4 years. I REALLY dug it. Super entertaining. Just need to clean up a bit.

I'm not sure that cavies will be in the top 5 come August, but their show is really entertaining and it's totally cavies which is always enjoyable. Percussion not AS strong as last year but still strong, and their brass is PHENOMENAL.

Not a huge fan of mandies tbh, it felt very "one note" in terms of design throughout the entire first half.I got bored but it's a cool concept And it does pick up later on the show.

Great shows by everyone. Favorite show goes to cavies for sure. So much energy!! Just really entertaining and that brass is coming for blood.

BD really impressed me, I'm usually not a fan but this felt fresh and fun, and flowed super well. Kept my attention the entire time. But they are a bit edgy sounding and had a few noticable tears. They always "write for August" so i expect that they will clean up a ton.

Vanguard honestly disappointed me a little. They were quite clean though. Maybe I had too high expectations, but I was honestly left thinking, "what just happened" and not in a good way. Can't put a finger in what I didn't really like, but alas. I think it'll warm up to me.Percussion (my caption) is OUTSTANDING as always though and their book is incredible. Just thought it was a bit haphazard.

I wasn't all that impressed with Vanguard, and typically when a corps wins and tries to recycle the same style they end up 5th. Just ask Crown and Bluecoats.

    Interesting..

I can tell you first hand that they are DEFINITELY not recycling though haha. I've seen it a lot so far. Just keeping their overall style like a corps should.

  6. They have some great music this year and from what I've seen of the percussion section (which for years has been their weakest section) they really are coming for another gold soon. Whether or not I think this year will be that year remains to be seen, but it relies solely on design.

For my money I'd say that judging the aesthetics and rep list, I think they're trying to get back to the 2013-2015 crown style which I really love. Kind of quirky but serious at the same time.

Wouldn't be surprised at all if they end up really making a case for top 3 this year (maybe even another championship), despite all the incredible talent and design I'm seeing from other top 6 corps.

Vanguard is gonna be tough to beat though (trust me I've seen it 😜)

What are you referring to score Wise?

How about BDB 2nd in Guard and Percussion?  ;)

Do you disagree with that? I think it reflects it well. SCVC win Percussion content and lost achievement. That's fair. They have more Percussion ensemble musicality and demand, but aren't achieving it as well as BDB. That's fair. They won by .1 anyways lol. And guard, same kinda things. I think it's really fair.

im biased of course, but id like to see Gold close the gap on SCVC tonight.

    They did, a little.

Mainly because SCVC dropped a few points. I think it was probably because they went on first due to having a long drive that night and there was a 5 man panel. It was very confusing, their show in SLC was one of the best they've had yet they still dropped?

Wow! The spread between SCVC and BDB opened up from the previous night. Anybody at both shows who can speak to this? Very curious if BDB had an off show on the 15th or are the judges really digging SCVC?

    14th

    SCVC 66.05 to BDB 65.10 (.95 spread)

    15th

    SCVC 67.75 to BDB 66.15 (1.60 spread)

No they both had good shows. I guess the judges just like SCVC! The crowd certainly loves it. It's an amazing show. BDB is great too though

  10. I haven't heard anything at all from the Vanguard organization about SCVC's show this year at all. Not even a minor post about it. What's up with that, am I right!? It seems like they are the only open class corps to not release their show or anything yet. Pretty strange.

Does ANYBODY know anything about what they are bringing to the table this year? I watched some of the show at their memorial weekend camp in May and it sounded great, but beyond the opener (which is what they were working on...putting it on the field. I understand they have their whole show musically learned though) I know absolutely nothing lol.

  11. Yes I have a friend in SCVC and they said that the sound equipment is thought to be pretty jacked. They completely lost a speaker for sure. Props are thought to actually be decently ok. They won't be able to access the truck again until later in the weekend or towards the end of the week though.

Since the show is pretty reliant on electronics and the props, I think these next two shows may be rough for a while until they figure it out. He said the corps is in good spirits now after a rallying from the director and they are determined to kick butt tonight!

Yes, as I noted in the post through that date, "BDB and SCVC will not be scored again for almost two weeks." In every recent year, this is the week in which a few other corps would overtake the SCVC and BDB scores.

Last year on this date, the top twelve scores were held by: 1. Music City, 2. Spartans, 3. Gold, 4. 7th Regiment, 5. Golden Empire, 6. Blue Devils B, 7. Vanguard Cadets, 8. Columbians, 9. Colt Cadets, 10. Legends, 11. Genesis, 12. Watchmen.

But the "real" top twelve for the season was probably something like this: 1. Blue Devils B, 2. Vanguard Cadets, 3. Legends, 4. Genesis, 5. Spartans, 6. Columbians, 7. Music City, 8. 7th Regiment, 9. Gold, 10. Louisiana Stars, 11. Raiders, 12. Guardians or Southwind or Golden Empire.

And while BDB and SCVC should never be counted out until it happens, eventually someone will beat them. Sure, it hasn't happened since 2012, when Oregon. But before that, they weren't always number one and two. In 2011, Oregon finished second to BDB with SCVC in third. In 2010, Oregon was second and Spartans were third, but that was probably due to SCVC not going to championships. In 2009, third place went to a corps that didn't even exist the next year, but what if Citations had survived the Great Recession? In 2008, third place went to Jersey Surf; what if they hadn't moved up to World Class? Would they be the dominating corps in Open?

And just ten years ago, BDB and SCVC finished fourth and fifth, respectively. Third place went to Teal Sound, who later moved up to World Class before folding. Second place went to Surf, thankfully still with us. And the champion that year was the Spartans. They could be again some day. Or Legends or Music City or someone else.

That would be interesting for sure! SCVC and BDB have certainly not declined, though. Music City looks  great this year and I think if anyone were to dethrone those two it could be MC. Midwest tour will be interesting this year for open class that's for sure!!!

Huge jump for Music City, propelling them to second place, ahead of the California cadet corps, at least for now. Legends also sees a nice bump. Nothing against BDB or SCVC, but it would be nice to someone else in first and/or second--it's been five years since either corps was beaten by anyone but the other. Two days off for all O.C. corps now.

SCVC and BDB haven't competed since Stanford, that's why lol

If I wouldn't get in trouble for distributing some of SW's show, I would. But I can say with full confidence that the hornline is going to kick ### this year :) not sure about the other captions though because I don't know much about percussion or guard

I'm really interested in them. Last year they were ranked 13th overall having ended a whole week before the other open class corps, and im excited to see how they do this year since they're going to open class championships. Rooting for them to make finals!

  15. What does everyone think about the West Coast open class corps' shows so far? I think SCVC has a great start... it seems like they don't have a closer yet and BDB has their show finished. BDD has steadily been beating SCVC so far but again VC does not have a closer and what they do have seemed unfinished. SCVC has also been beating BDB in percussion.
