If SCV has the same uniforms they had last year, they'd be 1 for me.

what is the reddit drum corps page?
reddit.com/r/drumcorps
There's also:
reddit.com/r/dci, but that has fewer people.

Is it just me, or does the first big hit in the ballad have a very similar chord progression to Bluecoats' version of Creep? I've noticed it three times -- once on the rehearsal vignette just before the dress rehearsal run through, once on the DCI webcast, and again on the bleacher POV just posted to youtube.
Yep! I-III-IV-iv, the exact same chord progression.

Find the video you like. Go into your browser, right after www. type in ss, hit enter and follow the download instructions. No software needed and works on almost all youtube vids.
This is like magic! (BUT I won't abuse it, haha).

Third was a gift. With or without the towers, it should have been fourth.
Not going to lie, I loved SCV's show and think they're going to be a medal contender again for the next year or two at least, but the Cadets just had a better show this year. Thematically, Cadets didn't do much for me, but they had one of the best overall books of the season in terms of music. Regardless of the visual dirt because of the towers they deserved 3rd.

For me, seeing Crown's rise to the top, having begun as a Division II corps, was incredible. It was fantastic watching a new champion, but I think 2013 had some incredible SHOWS this year, a couple of tear-jerkers.
This year: Madison, Troopers, Cadets and Crown come to mind. Just a fantastic year for DCI :')

If so she's a heckuva trooper cause she did it again during the victory run! I think that is urban legend with no factual basis
I'm so sorry! I was on my phone and accidentally down-voted you instead of up-voting you!

Crown 2010 is definitely the worst I've heard of or seen. And at finals? He detailed it on his Tumblr page and it just sounds terrible, especially not being able to march the year after. Thankfully he's still helping out with the corps and was a drum major (and timpanist) his age-out year.
I'm not sure how accurate this is, but I heard that the guard member who gets her throat slit in Spartacus back in 2008 broke her collarbone when she hit the ground?

Also add into the mix that some will be drawn to trying out for Crown now that they won. Each corps indeed has its own identity and style, but each year people will choose where to audition on many criteria, and being a part of a first place corps is one of them. These statistics are never published, but I am sure many age out potentials will be debating Devils or Crown hoping they choose the corps who will win in 2014. this is just my speculation and based on a few discussions with members of corps when they tell me where they marched before joining another corps. Cavaliers had a young corps this year, so when they took a dip in placement last year no doubt some of the previous members didn't stay and went elsewhere. Just a hunch.
I said this same thing and got heavy criticism, but I do agree, haha. I also heard that Crown has a lot of age-outs this year, so depending on a lot of other factors it can help or hurt them. All other things constant, however, I think this holds true and will definitely help Crown out in the future.

Their best move was to somehow pay off Fugett to gift them their drum score on Friday night so that they could go on last Saturday night so that they could get gifted the championship.
You don't sound very apathetic...

Crown - I'm a HUGE Crown fan and hated their show and music announcements, but it was surprisingly superb. The uniforms were also a shock D:
Spirit - didn't expect to like this show nearly as much as last year's based on Premiere, but holy cow, loved it! Great show and REALLY good soloists!
Troopers - EIGHT POINT JUMP FROM LAST YEAR. Wow.
Phantom... bahahaha, just kidding, they were probably least-surprising. Love the storytelling, but they've to reinvent themselves.
-
Keep in mind The Glassmen are coming back next year. It'll be interesting to see how the year off effects them. my guess is they lose alot of past members/recruits, but at the same time have a very well designed show. Heck, they'll end up having 21 months to think about it. I predict they'll get 15th place.
Any news if Teal Sound's returning?
-
it was amazing seeing them seperate themselves from the pack those two nights.
kinda like this.
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA, I laughed way too hard at this. Thank you, Japan!
-
Again I sort of agree with what you're saying, but wouldn't that, by definition, make these individuals you speak of ring chasers? Would they be a good fit with Crown? I'll be the first to admit that I've never marched with them, but I tend to think not.
I mean, it's sad, but they're definitely out there. I DO agree with what you're saying though and hope that Crown doesn't fall for ring-chasing.

Here's an old list from DCP, and we can fill in the missing ones.
It looks like there are 2 4-peats: Star 1990-1993, BD 1979-1982. BD, Garfield and Madison also have 3-peats.
2013 - Crown
2012 - Crown
2011 - Crown
2010 - BD
2009 - Crown
2008 - Phantom
2007 - BD
2006 - ?
2005 - Cadets
2004 - BD
2003 - BD
2002 - Cavaliers
2001 - BD
2000 - Cadets
1999 - BD
1998 - BD
1997 - BD
1996 - Phantom
1995 - Scouts/BD/Cadets
1994 - BD
1993 - BD/Star
1992 - Star
1991 - BD/Star

1989 - Phantom
1988 - BD
1987 - SCV(?)

1976 - BD
1975 - Madison Scouts
1974 - Madison Scouts
1973 - Madison Scouts
1972 - Anaheim Kingsmen
Let's see if Crown can break or tie that record! I loved their brass program this year so much (as well as last year's, but the staff learned when to turn it down a bit). SUCH an incredible brassline these past few years though, and had their second chance not fallen so flat they'd have a 5-peat by now :)
-
BD got one at prelims 2004 I think.
Also worth noting is Crown's Ott 3-peat, and 4 of the last 5. Does anyone know what the longest Ott winning streak is?
Didn't Phantom have a good run at it for a while fairly recently?
-
Just a reminder that the maximum score is not necessarily a "perfect" score. If a judge thinks corps A is better than corps B to whom she has given a 19.9, even if corps A makes a mistake, she has to give them a 20.0.
Oh dang, good point.
-
Maybe. But IMO, Crown was already at the height of their popularity. I mean, how big of a rock must one be living under if they'd never heard of Carolina Crown before tonight?
I mean, I think it's more of the fact that they actually have a championship now, which may inspire those interested in auditioning to go for them. I feel that the preceding year sets a MAJOR precedent for the following year in terms of recruitment. Regardless, Crown had a great year and can hopefully maintain that momentum and stay near the top for more years to come. It's been incredible watching them grow leaps and bounds over just the past 7 or so years.
-
Crown got a perfect 20 in brass! I know Cavaliers managed one in 2002 with Frameworks, but has any other corps managed a perfect 20 in brass? I can't think of any off of the top of my head (and other than 4 or 5 shows I'm unfamiliar with pre-2000s drum corps; sorry, I'm a young'in').
-
This is a really great breakdown, thanks! And I've heard great things about the Mandarins show this year, so I'll be sure to look that up!
-
I think now that Crown's won they're going to attract a lot of new folks and hopefully some good percussionists, making them better and starting this positive feedback loop (it seemed to start last year and maybe even in 2011, but they've been growing incredibly quickly). Of course, it also depends on their age-outs and how many they have.
Also, Troopers will rise again >:D

Every year I do a thread similar to this in which I list the top ten reasons why the current semi-finals leader won't win finals the next night. So, without further ado, here is the 2013 version.
10. The Cavaliers summon the Illuminati, who trick the judges into believing it's 2002, giving The Cavaliers title number 8.
09. The local police suspect that LOS is a real speakeasy after Spirit's show, so the event gets shut down. Blue Stars win their first title after no one else is able to compete.
08. The judges listen too closely to Crown's voice people while they are recording their scores. In their captions, Crown scores a 1, 2, 3, 4, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, etc.
07. Phantom lets loose a real dragon after their real Evil Queen gets kidnap and replaced by the Evil Queen in that one Disney movie.
06. George Hopkins.
05. The corps falls through a worm-hole and disappears before their performance, thus they cannot perform.
04. Albert Einstein is a surprise judge on the judging panel, and grades them down in every caption, saying ''That's not how it happened, etc" to everything they do.
03. The Blue Devils perform the Rite of Winter instead, making Winter come to LOS. No one wins because DCI doesn't compete during the winter.
02. "...we have a tie...."
01. ...well, I'll leave this to you, fellow DCPers. What is the number one reason Crown doesn't win tonight?
This post is not made to be a bash fest, but rather a way to have some fun with this year's finals.
I love this!
Best hornline in DCI

For quality of sound, I think '07-'09 Crown and 2000s Phantom. I love the writing from SCV and think their brass line consistently gets a great book.
Favorite hornlines would probably be '91-93 Star and Crown over the past 4 years (I think they've sacrificed tone a bit, but I've loved their books so much in recent years).
