  1. I recall 1988... where the performance order was all jumbled up... I think there was a healthy dose of leapfrogging there as well even with the recaps known.

    1988 DCI Semi-Finals and Finals Championships 1-12 Results Semis/Finals

Semis Score Diff. Finals (Order of Appear.) Score Diff. Corps +/- Score Diff.(Based on Finals finish)

    Madison 97.8 ---- Madison 97.1 (11) ---- - .7

    Blue Devils 96.8 - 1.0 SCV 96.9 (9) - .2 + .6

    SCV 96.3 - .5 Blue Devils 96.3 (8) - .6 - .5

    Cavaliers 95.6 - .7 Cadets 96.1 (12) - .2 + 1.3

    Cadets 94.8 - .8 Cavaliers 95.1 (3) - 1.0 - .5

    Phantom 93.6 - 1.2 Phantom 93.5 (10) - 1.6 - .1

    Star of Ind. 93.1 - .5 Star of Ind. 92.8 (6) - .7 - .3

    Spirit of Atl. 91.9 (Tie) - 1.2 Vel. Knights 90.6 (1) - 2.2 - 1.3

    Vel. Knights 91.9 (Tie) Tie Spirit of Atl. 89.3 (4) - 1.3 - 2.6

    Suncoast 90.5 - 1.4 Suncoast 89.1 (2) - .2 - 1.4

    Bluecoats 88.6 - 1.9 Bluecoats 86.7 (7) - 2.4 - 1.9

    Sky Ryders 86.6 - 2.0 Sky Ryders 85.1 (5) - 1.6 - 1.5

    * Though the order of appearance was jumbled (for lack of more intellectual terminology) for the Finals, only 2 Corps groups changed positions from their Semi-finals results (Blue Devils/SCV and Cavaliers/Cadets). Oddly enough, this was attributable more to a corps increasing their score (of which there were only 2), and less to the other corps' score reduction. If the corps which dropped (Blue Devils and Cavaliers) had maintained their semi-finals score standing, they still would not have maintained their placement. Other than that, it indicates (at least to me) that there was a rather strong level of agreement between the semi-finals and finals judging panels in terms of corps placement. However, more detailed interpretation of the individual caption results may not totally support this conclusion.

    * There really was no change between Spirit/Velvet Knights in terms of position, since they tied in Semis. Barring another tie, one of these two corps would have to go up...and the other would have to go down.

    * 2 Corps scores went up Semis to Finals (SCV and Cadets), which led directly to increasing their finals placement result by one placement.

    * The remainder of Corps scores went down from Semis to Finals. This, again, would lead me to believe that a panel-to-panel comparison would indicate a generally consistent rendering of "tougher panel/easier panel" basis. ("Tough" and "Easy" are not the best words to use, I know. But I think most will understand what I'm saying -- even if it seems that I am speaking Czech, Latin, or Martian.)

As for conjectures of reasoning and meaningful interpretation of the influence of recaps on the actual placement and scoring, I'll leave that up to wiser and more knowledgeable folks. I'm just an idiot, and am simply giving the facts, Ma'ams and Sirs. Simply think of me as Joe Friday on a Tuesday. And please forgive my lack of columnal (yes, there is such a word) consistency. No, I'm not doing this while enjoying a gentle Bering Sea sojourn aboard Aquapuke Cruise Lines. I just haven't as yet figured out how to accomplish tabbing on a DCP posting board. I'm saving that for something fun to do in my future, yet soon-to-be impending, retirement. Maybe Ghost and I can meet again at the Morgan House, and he can instruct me with a laptop. However, we'd probably end up yapping all afternoon....

  2. I picked Boston last week for 10th. Thats because I want to dine on delicious crow. If they finish lower than this I want to be able to blame Craiga. I try to cover all the bases whenever humanly possible.

That must be terribly, terribly taxing on you. Where are the rest of your infield buddies??

  3. Scores during the early season tend to be kind of worthless, with partial panels. I have always thought maybe DCI should save some money, and not start judging corps until the first big regional. Maybe start with the Denver show, and then not judge again until Minneapolis. Then have judges throughout the rest of the season. That would allow the staff and design team almost a full month to completely develop their own ideas without input from the judges. And it would still give them several weeks to implement any changes they feel the judges are asking for. And maybe it is just me, but I would much rather see shows develop the way they were intended, rather than changing them to just help them score higher from the judges. And with the money DCI saves on early season judges, maybe they could afford to pay a little more for licensing fees so we could get complete shows on DVD/CD/Bluray, or put towards the fannetwork so we could get at least partial archives back.

Combining the fiscal aspect with a pragmatic alternative. Very, very nice. Still thinking about your proposal...but I like the attempted solution/impact suggestion.

  4. Whatever the implications for the members, for fans, and for DCI, there will be an interesting psychology PhD thesis examining judging behavior as drawn from an analysis of [2016 recaps] vs. [pre-2016 recaps].

There you go getting all "Intelligentsia" on us yet again. :silly: ... :colgate:

  5. I predict that the DCI judges will know the allegedly sealed recaps from the previous shows. I predict that it will mostly be the fans that will receive the biggest blackout effect from the 2016 newly instituted sealed recaps policy from DCI.

Well, a post-season analyzation of the nightly/progressive performance scores across all captions should be rather telling. I would think that wider jumps or discrepancies from night to night might indicate, in hindsight, that the new regimen is being practice and adhered. Progressions which are of a little/no change basis would tend to render a "hmmmmm...." verdict. I wish I were a full-blown statistical analyst...

  6. Life is treating me just fine, thank you. By the way, I have won Gold on the national scale with a staff that adheres to Integrity, but I also quit a team that ended up winning Gold because the staff exhibited unprincipled deceit behind the scenes. Moreover, I would rather finish last with honor than first with dishonor. So, yeah, wonderful is treating me well.

As to my "Wonderland" response, let me be the first to admit that I was most probably wrong in responding to you in that manner. Therefore, please accept my admission as such, and my sincere apologies to you for doing so.

I would love -- dearly so -- to live in an ideal world. A world in which rules and guidelines are never broken or not followed. A world in which ethics, morality, sportsmanship, and the "spirit of fair play" are not only always followed, but maintained and followed by all. A world in which the ultimate rewards to an individual are always based on achieving the very best that one can achieve, and based upon the amount of growth one experiences given the obstacles with which one is confronted. A world in which "Gold" is based as much on that which leads to even further growth and the enjoyment of life, and less upon the simple "placement of the day." Or to quote the late Dr. King: "The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy." All of that being said, let's now cut to the chase...

    A. Rules and/or guidelines are broken...all the time. Whether they be of a legal, ethical, moral, or spiritual nature. It's simply human nature -- the desire to "win" or "get ahead" in many individuals overtakes what would otherwise be pure and rational thought.

    B. Not everybody agrees with any thought, word, or action posed and imposed by another individual. For every parent or fan who stands up and says "It isn't fair. That kid was wronged by his teacher, coach, or general leadership.", there will be another who will stand up and say "Who cares?? All the other kids have been busting their butts to win -- and if adding this other new kid will help the team, then we're all for it." Personally, I am generally not of this philosophy -- but there are also times in which I can understand it being taken. And when dealing with "team" organizations, there is a very difficult fine line to be walked between the good of the individual and the good of all. Sometimes, what is good for the individual may not be for the good of the all. And conversely, there are instances where what is best for the all may not necessarily be the best for an individual.

    C. If the points in both A and B are a given, it is therefore also a given that the actions do occur. If they never occurred, then there would be no need for the rules or guidelines in the first place. A "65 Miles Per Hour Speed Limit" exists simply because if it did not exist, then people would simply drive faster. If the average passenger vehicle's maximum speed was 55 miles per hour, then there would be no need for a speed "limit" of 65, would there?

    D) As pointed out earlier on this thread, it was contended and maintained that we generally don't know the fullest extent of the given situation leading to the original posting. If we are not fully informed of both/all sides of an issue, then the ensuing discussion is of little practical value, and is little more than an exercise in Forensics.

Stu -- Neither Mike D. or I, at any time, spoke out in defense of robbing an individual of his or her humanity, rights, privileges, or fairness as to the issue. Neither did we in any way speak in support of the practice taking place against any individual. To say or even infer that we did so makes you every bit as guilty as I was in my response to you. I thought I was pretty clear in my original post that I was speaking merely from the experience of seeing these type of things being done -- not that I was in philosophical or practical agreement with such actions taking place. I, too, believe in integrity, as I'm sure most of us on here do. I try to teach it to my kids -- ALL the time. You strive to win; but when the other guy beats you, it is with grace and good will that you are the very first in line to shake his hand and say "Congratulations. You were better than me today. Nice job." And mean it. I applaud you on your past record of success, and respect you for it. And I respect you even more for maintaining and teaching your obvious moral, ethical, supportive, and enriching viewpoint.

  7. Interesting responses. So, unofficially behind the scenes in competitive youth activities such as DCI... having recruitment Integrity, Honor, Righteousness, Virtue, Honesty, and Decency, but possibly missing Finals, is something to avoid; and unofficially behind the curtain being Devious, Unprincipled, Dishonest, Deceitful, Fraudulent, and Duplicitous in recruitment, in the name of possibly winning the Gold, is a wink, wink we will turn our heads ok way of doing business. Hmmmm. By the way: with most State Athletic Associations as well as the NCAA, American Legion Baseball, etc... when a team is caught by the sanctioning body violating those recruitment ethics, the sanctioning bodies do not look the other way, that team is rightly punished in a punitive manner irrespective if it was done on purpose or not.

By the way...how's Wonderland treating you??

  8. I had the condensed score with correct time sigs from the original Paul Winter notation for his small group. Basically just chord changes and time sigs. . . the opening is in 10/8. . . with snippets of 5/8. . . 12/8. . .

Opening piano lick = 000 000 00 00 groupings of eighth notes = underlying rhythm of dotted quarter, dotted quarter, 2 quarters. . . repeat pattern. . .

It's a fun piece to work on. . . I got to do it for full symphony accompanying Paul Winter's actual 5tet. . . FUN!!

    Chuck Naffier

Edit: nm. Your "000 000 00 00" above threw me. My original post rendered redundant due to my confusion.

  9. What you wrote may be the simplest way but is not necessarily the best way. An alternate is a person who has spent a massive amount of money, time, energy, and commitment to the cause of a particular organization;,and in this case the person is a youth not an adult 'professional'. That commitment put forth by the youth should and must be honored. So let's say the alternate is a good brass player, not the best player but good enough to be a part of the team, and the lead trumpet had to leave; the best, not the simplest, but the best scenario would be to move the best 1st trumpet to the lead soloist position and maybe put the best 2nd part player on 1st part then place the alternate into the 2nd part position. Name one other legitimate youth organization, not adult professional, but youth organization that would do the following like you suggested: A second string youth has paid all fees, attended all practices, worked just as hard as the first stringers, sacrificed pretty much everything to sit on the bench at all games waiting with anticipation for the time to say, "Put me in Coach!" Then when a first stringer gets hurt the coach bypasses that second stringer and recruits an outsider hot-shot who has made no sacrifice nor commitment to the organization at all whatsoever. Name one legitimate youth organization that would find that acceptable.

When or if asked, of course none would outwardly (publicly) find it acceptable. Correct on the point, and in the stated philosophy. But what goes on behind the scenes, and not altogether unknown to the league or larger administrative sponsorship involved, is another thing altogether. To a huge degree? No, I would not say so. But I have seen it occur -- and yes, with full knowledge of league administration/leadership. The statement is often made "We don't wish to get involved in individual organizational matters," and while then re-asserting their stance that such (suddenly bringing in the outside "ringer" over the long-standing member) shouldn't exist, their assertion is often met with a wry smile and a knowing wink. It happens. Trust me.

  10. A semantic two cent's worth here...

I'd try eliminating such qualifiers as "upper/lower tier," "wow groups," "stepping stone," or any other potentially embarrassing terminologies from my vocabulary as soon as humanly possible. The more one uses them and becomes comfortable in using them, the easier it is for any of them to suddenly pop out at a most inopportune moment. Many of our spoken mistakes happen subconsicously...but they become just as problematic as those which are intended. That's why any opportunity you receive is a learning opportunity -- unless you feel that you already know it all. And you (to your very great credit) do not appear to be that sort of individual.

My very best wishes to and for you on what I hope is a most incredible and worthwhile experience -- no matter where your talents, and the whims of the Drum Corps Gods, take you. Godspeed.

  11. My Spidey Sense tells me all the supposed intrigue is meant to be tongue-in-cheek, a bit of fun. If I were a betting man, I would not put my money on anything profound. I have no special knowledge, only a gut feel.

Are you saying that there actually ARE things on DCP which are not profound??? Really??? Say it isn't so, Joe....say it isn't so. (Carried off into the distance by my little 8-year-old legs, sniffling in abject disappointment. Please God, for the love of all that is most holy.....)

  12. Hmmm. It's not meant to be impressive. It was a statement that demands on kids can manifest pre existing injuries, new ones etc. Sometimes it's a slippery field, or inadequate warm up, temporary lapse in focus etc. Not sure why I'm reading about NASCAR.

Maybe they suffered from malnutrition caused by eating supper from a poisoned restrictor plate???

  13. It wasn't that long ago that Blue Stars made a big jump back into finals from 14th to 8th. It's not so far fetched for Troopers to jump a spot or two.

I agree. I guess the oddity isn't so much the jump (or the extent of which)...but the Corps which is doing so.

  14. Only going with one single pick. Why pick 12 when the cumulative stupidity of the single pick is just as powerful, and works just as well?

    10th -- Troopers

I know, I know. Corps don't jump 3 spots in a single year. And some would need to fall. Who? What...do I look like Nostradamus? No freakin' idea. But the earth was supposedly considered to be flat at one time in history. Or as Kathy Griffin says... "allegedly."
