Hybrids with some of those elements, but more about the essence of the inspiration:

I like your "hybrid" categorization. To me, something is always a little bit more interesting when there remains room for one's imagination to roam free. Providing an essence is great for this. It sets a general tone, yet allows the listener to lose himself in the pure sights and sounds. To a degree, it almost makes one feel that he is a part of what he is seeing -- rather than simply existing as an entity to which a lecture or sermon is delivered.
Earlier in the thread, MikeN opined "Sorry, my point really is that the easiest way to a man's heart is through his emotions, and the easiest way to get emotion is to tell a story. And in drum corps, the best told stories are sometimes the simplest." While I agree with some of what he was saying, there is a part of me which disagrees with his above contention. I don't believe that telling a story is necessarily the easiest way to get emotion. Sometimes, it is little more than a sheer power or content of the music in and of itself. I would contend that Barber's "Adagio for Strings" would be a most suitable example. Our associations -- what we "see" as a vision or story -- is not based on any overt reasoning on Barber's part. We may have associations, but they derive from sources and times when that music has been used in a supporting role (Platoon, et. al.). But throwing all of those extra-musical associations aside -- it remains, on it's own, one ###### emotionally wrenching piece of music. And one which can mean many things to many people; and the beauty of this is the realization that none of those things are wrong. It is much akin to words of Stephen King: "It is the story -- not he who tells it." In this art, the music is the story. All else is simply a narrator.

BD has never been known for interesting drill. State of the art, yes.... Great staging? Absolutely. Interesting drill? It's always clean and well marched, but not an emphasis. There have been some cools stuff from time to time.
As far as 80s drill being pedestrian, I disagree. Drill started heating up Mid 80s to the run and gun 90s and 2000s until recently,
Cadets drill to "Rocky Point Holiday" (1983) was the first of the new style that really blew me away...and still does.

12 is good. The competition to get into finals is almost as exciting as the competition to win. More than 12 and you lose quality among the lower finalists. It's traditional as well.
I understand your point. However, given the opinions expressed previously on this thread, there does not appear to be a feeling that anything over 12 automatically leads to a decrease in quality among the lower finalists. The hand-wringing over the prospects of the corps in positions 13-15 would lead one to believe that these are still finalist-level corps -- but they are only deemed "non-finalists" due to the 12-corps ceiling.

I am solidly for keeping it the way it is...and always has been. "Tradition" goes both ways on this; some have argued that with 22 corps in World Class, 12 (more than half) is too many, and advocate decreasing it to 10. The counter-argument to this is usually "but it's always been done this way." For those advocating raising it to 15, that same "tradition" argument must equally hold true.

It'll be late in the season, but the Aug. 8 show at Erie, PA should be a knock-down drag-out affair for a number of corps. BAC, Crossmen, Troopers, Blue Stars, Oregon Crusaders, Mandarins, Jersey Surf & Pacific Crest. The night before in Rome, NY its SCV, Madison, Blue Stars, Cascades, Colts, SOA, Academy, and Troopers. Two big nights, especially in that 8-14 area.

Lots of good stuff to be found with these Corps.
One of the misconceptions we sometimes hear is that all the " innovativeness, originality, new things, etc " is found first in DCI with the Elite Corps at the very top. But my observations over the years has shown that this is not neccesarily the case at all. Lots of new, fresh ideas are actually seen and heard first with these level Corps. Whether it was the first use of the violin ( Oregon Crusaders), or the 1st use of a synthesizer ( by a 20th placing Corps at the time, Boston ), first use of electric guitar ( Teal Sound ), etc and dozens of new and creative things first found in DCI with these level Corps. Then, ironically, we oftentimes then see the Elite Corps incorporating some of these innovative things or new instrumentations into their future shows. Thats why I always try and catch these level Corps shows, not only because many of them can be very entertaining, but also to see what new, fresh, and creative things are being done here with these fine Corps.
Good points. Some of that may come from the fact that they have less to lose -- and a whole lot more to gain -- from a competition standpoint, as compared to those in the top 3-5.

I think I finally get the stagecoach thing. People were complaining it just moves across the field with little purpose. Maybe it signifies a journey the main character takes in the relentless search for justice/revenge.
Or, not.
No disclaimer necessary, Dad. If it works for you, go with it. As with most stories, there can be more than one interpretation.

Crusader Cuisine is also making a name for itself in drum corps circles.
One day it is spaghetti with the Regiment, another day it's "lunch for Lenox" with the Cadets,...
Much appreciated I'm sure.
Next week it will be a joint lunch soiree with the Bluecoats and that group from Casper. Highlights of the menu will be "Trooper Scoopers" and "Bedeviled Eggs" for appetizers, heroes for the sandwich, and Pineapple Downside-up Cake for dessert..

DCI has been getting extremely serious about cracking down on illicit recordings (read: YouTube and Facebook videos) of shows, so you probably won't get to see it anywhere except in person or on a DCI Live broadcast.
Ha! Now there's an idea for Troop's 2017 show (if it hasn't already been done). From "Hero"....to "Illicit."

Why, thank you, Sir. I'm sure that I will. It won't be the same without being with you for the day...I guess I got pretty darned spoiled on my first endeavor. Suffice it to say, I'll be missing my old (relatively speaking, of course) audience section partner. And no...no need for the assistance. I think I'll get there pretty well on my own. Let's see --- Mass. Turnpike east, Exit 10 toward Worcester, and I-290 North...right??? (Ha! Now you'll be worrying about me all day long, won't you? "Ask a silly question" and all that jazz.... . Yes, I'll be fine.).
Hope you and yours are well, Sir, and enjoying your summer. Take care.
P.S. -- I do most ardently hope that you are not expecting a full written report of the evening's activities. Submitting last year's report/review rendered me totally brain dead (well, even more so than usual, I guess) for weeks following...

Nahhhhh...just go ahead and shoot me before you even stick me up there.
. And yes, I DO know that it's folly to compare two shows 1300 miles apart. Still...the scores are in the same neighborhood. That's all I"m saying.
