  1. Or... more likely.... with the first look of the season... judges go conservative and use last season's placements as their benchmark for their 1st show's placements and scores.

Maybe I'm exhibiting my true rampant naivete here, BRASSO, but i would dearly hope that isn't the case. For one, it's a new season, with new performers -- I would like to believe that it would be considered as such...after all, they don't deserve to be assessed according to last year's group of performers. Second, doing so would only serve to give fodder to those who make their claims of "DCI slotting." I would think that would be the very last position any judge would wish to have him/her self be placed.

  2. But, we know your heart is still in Casper, WY HT.

As for tonight's scores compared to previous years, scoring sheets, etc. sometimes it might come down to how mm of any corps handle the jitters the first couple of shows, especially when the Oil Can is your first performance.

Maybe a large portion of my drum corps heart is in Casper, Ghost. But as per our extensive, one-day conversation last summer, you know that my true heart is, always was, and always will be in New England...and more specifically, in Boston. Can't deny the genetics, after all. And besides...though I've never been considered to be a big-hearted person, there's still plenty to go around. :colgate:

  3. So...how about them Crusaders? I find it completely absurd that in a season where Boston might well have its strongest corps in many years that we are speculating on controversies which may or may not arise about issues which may or may not surface. How about taking a look at what we do know, have seen, and heard about this year's show? Perhaps reaction to the music? The visual package? The organization? The preview?

As I write this, the drum corps is in Indiana working their tails off. Please tell me that as supporters of these kids, we have more to offer them than these capricious ramblings about fictitious scenarios and contrived controversies.

BAC, I, for one, can't wait to see you guys tomorrow night!

Personally, no apology will be forthcoming from me. I was simply attempting to answer a question as posed. I was of the belief that doing so was still allowed in the United States of America. As for best wishes for BAC...I'm sure that both Ghost and Liahona (among others) will attest to the fact that I have become a rather huge fan of the Crusaders. As such, I am incredibly excited about their prospects for 2016.

  4. One thing I have been asking myself so far this year, however, and seeing that lower right leg of the guard uniform, I have to keep asking it:

Boston - did you obtain licensing rights from Artists Rights Society to reproduce the Pablo Picaso work?

I'll do more intensive checking on this later tonight. But based upon cursory inspection, copyright of visual art/media (painting, sculpture, etc.), copyright is maintained for the life of the artist plus 70 years. But as I said, I'll check up more on this later.

  5. Well, we just disagree on this point then, no problem.

I believe a brass judge can judge a 60 member brass line compared with another 60 member brass line, when they are all utilizing the same brass instruments for the evaluation comparison to determine which is played musically " better ". Yes, it is a subjective evaluation, but nonetheless, the judges's training, experience, and good ear allows it to be done, imo. But can a judge judge which orchestra is " better " if one orchestra utilizes one group of instruments, while another, another form of instrumentation ? No, I do not believe so. I believe they can only tell us which of the 2 orchestras they " like " better . Add in 12 or 40 more orchestras, with different instruments utilized, and it makes the impossible, solidified as such, imo. Now, if 2 orchestras are utilizing the same musical instruments, can a well trained, experienced, judge of orchestras tell us, in their professional opinion, which is " better " ? Yes. I do. While subjective in nature, the ability to compare apples to apples here can be made in such a like kind comparison of the brass instruments quality of playing. Now having said all this, can a DCI GE Music judge, properly judge a show where the musical units utilize such disparate instrumentation ( augmented by additional different synthetic sounds, among the units to be judged ) its its musical general effect capacities ? Yes, they can, imo. But a brass judge ? No. I do not believe so at all. Their evaluation thus becomes wholly within the " what sound do I like " realm.... not which is " better "

Though a matter of splitting the cilia of an amoeba, the problem simply lies in the use of the word "better." We, as listeners/observers, might deduce from a tally and table of scores which corps were "better" than others. However, is it not true that the judge's first job is to address the "proficiency," and level to which that is attained, of each corps or competition caption? Each judge determines the level of proficiency of that corps subset which he or she judges, and only that subset. Yes, "what do I like," "what music turns me on," and/or "what sound do I find to be most representative" may very well be a subconscious entity -- one which simply cannot be helped. But to think that those factors become a major focus leading to evaluation? I would dearly hope not. Otherwise, DCI judges would be little more than a bunch of "Dance Fever" judges running around saying "Hmmmm....nice groove...good steps. I really liked that. I think I'll give it a 98."

  6. Two chairs under a tree, eh?

Yah, dem 'Coats know how to do it up right, don't ya' know...

    :tounge2:

You just succeeded in bringing a bit of a lump to my throat, Gar. Those three words were how my dear Grampa Wild would end every sentence he spoke...and for some reason, always with a playful, yet self-satisfied glint in his eye. It made me realize that next year will be the 40th anniversary of his departure. I miss the old guy like you wouldn't believe...

Thanks for bringing me a wistful, yet wonderful moment of memory. And congratulations on your milestone.

  7. This rule was put in place to lessen the possibility that DCI judges would utilize previous shows scores from impacting their evaluations when they get to see, hear, and evaluate all the performances, at the shows they judge. Its a nice thought and a nice rule iin all, but I believe will have no impact on what the judges will do.

That said, I predict much volatility in the scores , spreads this season from show to show. Thats because, imo, the music judges will be asked to judge completely different musical sounds from the field that are created by completely different instrumentations, in combination with adult created sound machines altering the music sounds altogether. In this impossible situation to determine which completely different musical sounds is " better ", judges will be reduced to determining which of these completely different musical sounds coming from the field that they " like " better. To that extent, a person's " like " in music is much more personal in nature.. including judges themserlves. So the recap secrecy rule won't have nearly the effect on this predicted volatility in the 2016 scores and spreads, as will the disparity in the instrumentations, and the manner in which these completely different musical sounds among these Corps will reach the judges ears. For example, if the judge prefers the sounds of a Drum & Bugle Corps, he may score their music " better "with that Corps over that of another, that has a different sound altogether. If another judge likes the sounds of( for example ) Marching Bands, he might score that musical sound better over the one that sounds more like a Drum & Bugle Corps. Do people see my point here ? The sounds from the field with these Drum Corps will have little in common with one another in many respects this season now. I said before on here... go easy on the judges this year. They will be telling us what sounds they" like", not which is" better", as no such " better" comparison can possibly be made any longer, imo.

It is apparent that you have spent WAAAAYYYY too much time following the current political news.

  8. Yes... As a matter of fact I drove thru there as recently as last nite ( Harvard, Ma. ) on the way to Ash Burn'em, where BAC was practicing. I would have gotten admitted to Harvard Univ., if it wern't for my grades, SAT's, and grandparents lineage ( County Cavan, Ire. ). Other than that, they said I qualified, Ghost.

You most definitely would have put the "poison" in the Ivy. :silly:

  9. I couldn't hear any either. Either they're super subtle, or some may be added in later in the season.

Taking a real stab here, and you'll have to forgive me if I appear to be stretching it a little bit.

    1) I believe that the Mid-Horn melody at 2:54 - 3:08, 3:36 - 3:43, and final statement at 4:10 - 4:12 are modal treatments, with rhythmic variation, of the Conquest theme.

    2) The trumpet solo (especially the beginning, 5:06 - 5:14) might be construed as a latin "bullfight" treatment of the Conquest theme. Actually, I tend to think that the entire solo is almost a verse of the Conquest melody. (Edit: On further listening, this may instead simply be an extension of "impossible Dream.")

    3) The power hits (8:32 - 8:54) may be interpreted as rhythmic variation of the Conquest opening and closing power rrhythm (Hit-rest-Hit-Hit, Rest-Hit-Hit-Hit) rhythm. This is obscured by the fact that the meter of the section is in 3/4, not 4/4. Also, I seemed to pick this up in the underlying accents of the earlier drum break.

Just a stab, and please forgive me if I am in error. If any on the Cru staff were to read this, they would probably be laughing their a**es off at the sheer inanity.

  10. This happens often throughout the activity. It's not just about a corps getting better BUT who didn't progress or who slips. This of course has nothing to do with personal best or personal goals but as far as competition ( which is what this is, maybe not everything but still competition for placements ) it can often mean a corps getting alot better and no movement or still not making finals. Often some see huge progress and predict a jump in placements but of course creating their own scenario's with no one else improving..lol Not speaking of anyone in particular just human nature I suppose.

It can be heartbreaking for sure but thats the nature of competition.

Not to mention those maddening times when one's group gets what seems to be a lot better...and falls a placement or two.

  11. Definitely NOT your father's '73 Muchachos "Impossible Dream." All I can say is that somebody on that arranging staff has quite the vivid imagination. And I thought I went crazy over the AF "Polyushko-Polye" treatment...love it, love it, love it!!! Can't wait until the horn line reaches that mid-season "chops of steel" stage...gonna' be a real ba...uh...nut buster.

    Hey Ghost baby....diggin' it?

  13. Oh, shoot, Wes, of course, that's the reason. Dan Acheson went to the DCI corps directors, hat in hand, and said: "We have to do something. Boo is exhausted. I know, I know, he should put the laptop down and walk away from the caption scores, but he can't do it..."

    :sarcasm::sarcasm::sarcasm::sarcasm:

Maybe he (Boo) can threaten them with the current threat rage: "I'll put my laptop down and walk away from the caption scores --when you release the transcripts of your backroom speeches." :colgate::ninja::colgate::ninja::peek:
