To build on this. A community based navigation app for the lot. How many times have you been in the lot watching group x warming up and wondered where group y was at? If you're in the lot watching group x, you can tag where the group is and others can look at the map and see precisely where they're at. Since Allentown is this weekend, groups warm up in the park, across the street in residential neighborhoods, in business parking lots. If I'm looking for a particular group, I spend way too much time walking around and most times can't find them. Also, it would answer the question "Is group x here yet?"
I really like where that kind of idea could go
I have some free time and need a project to work on so I was thinking of building something for the community. Is there any web/app ideas you have wished you could have for drum corps? I can't guarantee I can get to it, but I have some time to kill before I get more work for my current job
hit me up on github @ justinsoliz when you get something going, I'd love to contribute.
I think this also raises a broader question in that I'm sure there are plenty of ageouts who have since gone into software development.
What can we do as ageouts to start churning out more open source apps for the community?
I think a good start might be an official github organization for dci, drumcorps or something along those lines...
edit: Right after I posted this I realized a better starting place might be replacing the crap version of the dci website they have right now. At minimal, something far more presentable on mobile/tablet devices would be nice.

Concentrate on auditioning however you're most comfortable, even if its on trombone. The staff will most likely assign splits anyway based on your strength and others around you. The rest works itself out.

And lots of staff has been shared back and forth between them over the years. Scott Johnson taught SCV back in the day, and Meehan was in SCV's horn line.
actually to be more specific, John Meehan (BD brass staff) taught SCV, his brother Tim was in the hornline

Dude enjoy your summer off. It might be your last until you ageout after which you'll probably have school and/or a real job.

Question. I'm a little confused about precicesly what the word "clean" means in this context. What part of the captions does that apply to? Are we looking at the Visual and Music categories under the 'Excl', 'Ach', 'Tech', etc numbers? Or is it something else? Is it how straight the lines are and the precision of the curves in forms? Diagonals? Feet timing? All of the above? Just curious if the opinions here match how judges score, which is not often the case.
A lot of people bring up 2001, I think it's one of the best case studies of 'clean' vs 'design'. Cavies won GE (essentially design) but failed to win any performance caption. I think Drums went to Cadets and Brass, Guard, Viz Performance went to BD.
You can't have good design numbers without good performance from the members because then the design fails to communicate and vice versa but I think generally you focus on the second half of the performance captions (Brass, Guard, Drums, Viz) which is 'Ach'.
Clean is good GE by itself.
In GE terms this falls under 'Effect through excellence'

11 years with the Glassmen...WOW but can you explain to me how that is possible with the age limits being between 14-21 (7 years) Was that not a rule when you marched. That's very cool that you put in that many years with the same corps!
Any age 'minimum' is usually at the discretion of the specific corps, otherwise there really is no minimum age for drumcorps.

Some additional costs to consider from experience I have as a corps parent. BD did not provide housing or food for most meals for Spring training. Regiment did not provide food for all meals during winter camps. Both corps feed the kids very well once they are on the road, but there were some unexpected costs before they hit the road. Neither corps provided transportation from the nearest airport, so you had to take public transportation. This was all a surprise for me as Crossmen provided food for all meals, housing for all camps, and transportation from the airport.
Just to elaborate, there really isn't 'housing' for camps and all days. When I marched at bd, we split hotel rooms for camps and rented an apartment for all days.

Yes. When was the last time they beat either Bd or cadets?
You mean besides beating both of them this season?
-
that's going too far.
but i do wonder why rocketman says that.
the cadets are moving very fast for practically the whole show, and that opener is really long and aggressive....looks incredibly exhausting to me.
I completely agree with the demand in Cadets program but to say that BD 'doesnt do anything visually to impair their playing' is flat out ridiculous.
-
While I understand that the days when breakneck drill moves were the “in” thing to do are gone, there are still some corps that at least “attempt” to entertain us visually with their marching program. The Blue Devils are not one of those corps (IMO).
Of course they execute well, they’re not doing anything visually that would impair their ability to play well.
So, why are they getting credit for being so good when in reality, it isn’t all that hard to play when you have practically no marching responsibilities? (Compared to corps like Cadets, Cavies, Regiment and others)
This might be the silliest thing I've seen on DCP (and I've been here awhile...)

Crazy, I went to UTSA, never knew about a marching band.
-
I seem to remember a pretty epic pillow fight with Scv and Phantom during Tour of Champions. Thats gotta count for some kind of a rivalry.
-
nope, sorry. Both of them tied with a 19.6 at Finals. Star won Field Brass, BD took Ensemble Brass, and they tied for the total.

This is almost comical. I'd say that most of the people who voted for crown 09 havent seen or heard a lot of the previous years, at least live anyway. I think Crown was the best line in 09 but in this decade alone, I feel that there were quite a few hornlines that were better. 2000 Cadets, 2001 Cadets, 2001 Devs, 2002 Cavaliers, 2004 Blue Devils, 2004 Cavaliers, 2005 Cadets, 2007 Cadets, 2007 Bluecoats...
-
While maybe not as amazing as these past 3 years, the Blue Devils' run from 1994-1997 was pretty crazy. They went 103-7 over those 4 years.
1994 - 28-0
1995 - 21-3
1996 - 27-2
1997 - 27-2
I think they didnt lose till quarters-ish in 98. Probably a few more wins in there....

I dont think 2 points is THAT significant and (from personal experience... lol) I've seen those kinds of spreads erased instantly.
A lot of people on DCP have a problem with the WHAT (content and repertoire), saying that other corps have a better show than BD and therefore should be ahead of BD. This may or may not be the case but before that even becomes a topic, those competing corps need to have their HOW (field performance sub capts...) at the same level. And yes, I objectively believe BD is performing their show at a higher level than anyone else right now, as unenjoyable as it is for me to watch.
-
Its at judson stadium so more than like thats the reason.

I think as the activity evolves we need to intellectually let our perception of "demands" evolve with it. Marching and playing simply doesnt cut it anymore as the end all be all of demand. I dont know who's show is harder and dont really try to judge that but I have a pretty good idea of when performers are presented with simultaneous demands and how well they execute them.
When I marched, I remember a few times where I felt an incredible amount of demand and thinking most people in the crowd will never notice this unless it looks bad like lining up a cross with a blind linear build front to back or horn moves that initiate and lock on the downbeat while playing upbeats and/or triplets.
When I watch a show I look for the difference between design in music arrangement, visual design (performer simultaneous demands), and its influence or lack of influence on hornline execution. When its all said and done, its the only true equalizer because comparing BD to Cavs to Regiment is like comparing apples, oranges, and a hamburger.
-
we'll have to agree to disagree. like that's new. I do notice you didn't reply to my post regarding biases and how that affects viewings of a corps
Blue Devils do care about scores/winning and its not really a secret... at certain points in time cheese bagels for snack might be the priority though. I try and stay away from all the BD stuff thats been going back and forth but I can at least settle this.

I would have to say anything with an OBJECTIVE winner. Sure referees, umpires, officials etc... influence a game but not quite to the degree of drum corps (gymnastics, diving or figure skating for that matter). I don't think athleticism has anything to do with the requirement of a sport. I would say chess, bowing, baseball, golf are better candidates for sports.

Oh i'm sorry that i'm a fan of corps that get 4th or 5th sometimes. I'm also sorry that some of those shows entertain me more. All I can say is that this has to be the most mature response I have ever seen in my entire life!
It may not be mature but it sure was clever...
-
Wow... a 50 page attack on BD. Cant say I'm really surprised but is this a record? What did cadets ever get up to?
-
The best seat is probably sitting right behind John Meehan in the lot.

BD: Gettting on the bus after a show and....
oh wait i guess we're talking on the field lol

I'll also add that BD is a great choice if you're a good conductor with leadership skills and have never marched.
If you really want to give yourself an edge, Pete is usually partial to people who live in the area with a pickup truck :)
