  1. Spirit has been around since 1977 and to the best of my knowledge, has never a transportation issue before, so why can't some of us just accept that just like a cigar is sometimes just a cigar, a transportation issue is sometimes just a transportation issue? If they take the field with a dismal performance and are underprepared, maybe we will have some reasons to comment, but for now give them not the benefit of the doubt, but the benefit of their many years competing. One year out of finals does not necessarily mean the end of a corps and its integrity.

Um. They had one in July 1980.

  3. I've tried a few times today (from work at from home) and the 'free' content is buffering for me in a major way if I try to view it in a browser. But ... when I grab the flv file directly from the rtmp stream, it downloads quickly - faster than even when I tested this with the old fan network. And the resulting file quality is very high - 7157 bitrate which isn't bad for Internet video.

So why does it play for bad in the browser and download fast directly?

  4. I got BluRays Essentials collections: Classics and Champions 1 & 2.

I know most of these shows by heart, but they look and SOUND GREAT on the Essentials collections.

What a joy to see these old, favorite shows in crisp BluRay quality!

Particularly meaningful when considering we might lose streaming these old classics to the lawyers.

Merry Drum Corps Christmas to my fellow band geeks!

I got the same thing. For the first time I wish I had better speakers with my TV.

  5. I love the stadium at Annapolis. I wish YEA! had kept USBands Nationals there...it is, to me, just about a perfect place to perform and watch a show. The band I teach competed there a number of times. Even small bands like ours sound OK.

Any suggestions how far up one should be in the stands? The most expensive tickets are near to top. I'm the type that appreciated being able to see the drill ... but prefer a happy medium.

  6. Letting it all mull about for a bit, I think there IS a specific argument that could be made for an IRS complaint (though Blair has not stated it). However, I don't think I will state it here in public, for obvious reasons.

Let's remember the National Football League is a 501©6. The IRS allows that to continue ...

As long as you stay within your bylaws and file your paperwork on time, it is really hard to lose status. Some people think that 501© organizations have to 100% charitable and not operate like a for profit organization. I can tell you from experience that all mid to large size 501© organizations run their business like ... businesses. Based on revenues and reserves, and number of staff, I would consider DCI to be a small organization.

A good explanation of the types of 501© organizations:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/501%28c%29_organization

  7. Yawn. I suspect you read the code you referenced? It deals with access to the entity's filings. DCI states in their filing that they will make available the 990s to the directors via .pdf and the fact that we're seeing them on Guidestar is proof that they are made public. There's no there, there.

Further it talks about "quid-pro-quo" and the true value of donations made to the org. I can speak from personal experience that DCI complies from this notification. Interestingly, the IRS would be more interested in my personal donation deductions that whether DCI fulfilled the required statement of value. After all, I'm the donor making the contribution and taking the tax deduction. Again, the code reference you provided is not related to Mr. Blair, even if its reading does make most people quake a bit.

Surely, nobody wants to run afoul of the IRS authorities, but there's no reason to suggest that the random "satire" posted by a single person with a long history of apparent vendetta and vocal personal opposition is sufficient to raise the even mild curiosity by the IRS.

Here are the facts of the 990s, despite Mr. Blair's contentions:

    - DCI spends along the lines of 85% of its revenue on its program mission.

    - The only unrelated business taxable income that DCI produces is the DCI Magazine ("Unrelated"? Umm).

    - The DCI executives are not paid unreasonably high salaries (even as many suggest they are unreasonably LOW).

    - The organization is advised and moderated by a board made up of the activity's participant corps who vote, agree, and command their executive to fulfill its wishes.

    - The contractors and advisors that DCI uses are experienced insiders of the activity. While the efficacy of using any particular provider might be discussion-worthy inside DCI, it is not the case from the public documents that the costs incurred in the hiring them represent an undue favoritism or attempt to enrich individuals at the expense of the organization.

    - DCI files a 990 schedule-O in which they state: "Every officer, director, and all employees are required to fill out an annual conflict of interest questionnaire that is monitored and revierwed (sic) by the audit committee."

Even a cursory view of the 990s by a curious IRS examiner will (IMO) verify that there is no "there" there. Nothing to see here.

I have to say this had really made my morning. I work for a mid-size ($40 million annual) 501©(6) that has a related 501©(3) and we have a few nutjobs like this guy who make it their mission in life to complain that we sould lose our not-for-profit status because we bring in too much revenue. Garfield has summed it up very well - the IRS won't even look at this. I've yet to comment in the 990 threads (again - great analysis Garfield) but my reaction is that Acheson does a good job for the organization and if anything he is under compensated vs industry standards. A little more reserves would be nice ... but I digress.

Let us assume for a moment that there is a judging conspiracy. And let us assume for a moment that Cesario has some conflict of interest. Neither of which I beleive, btw. Still ... the IRS won't care. This would be a matter for the DCI Board of Directors to handle according to their bylaws. Paying industry insiders to procide work for the organization is not only common - it is expected. They are called 'subject matter experts' and the organization has a fiduciary duty to spend their money using the best resources in the industry.

I've worked in the non-profit industry for 18 years and 990 complaints happen to just about every organization. All (nearly) all of them are as dumb as this one.

  8. - Blue Stars have supplanted Madison, once again, as the best corps in the state of Wisconsin. Will Madison respond? They have a lot to do in Madison, but I know the "boys" will be back. I also like the direction Blue Stars took this year, and they have an excellent instructional staff.

I'm confused. I thought Madison was from Indiana now???

  9. I find this really interesting. I really like this year's BD show, but I honestly liked their dada show and the re-rite of spring better. Not a BD homer, and I don't think they have ever had my favorite show in any given year, but I really like what they did in those shows. I know that is not a popular opinion. What is it about this year's BD show do you like better? Is it that it is less atonal/dissonant? Is it that there are more complete melodic phrasing? I admit my tastes are probably more esoteric than mosts. There are moments in this Fellini show that I love, but there are other segments I find a bit stale/boring. Interesting how different people have different tastes. I'm just glad that there is as much variety in DCI as there is.

Same here. Re-write took me about 3 viewing to 'get' but it has turned out to be one of my favorites from 2013. And I'm a SCV fan.
