Just when you thought it was SAFE to go back into drum corps...

...Hostrauser is here to show you that everything I know about drum corps is wrong!

    > Wait

    > Phil, that's supposed to read "everything YOU know about drum corps is wrong!" You were supposed to edit this! What do I even pay you for?

    > What?

    > Oh. Right. I don't pay you. Wait. Then what are you doing in my house?

Only a fool would try to make predictions based on the first few shows of the season. But I am that fool! I expect the spans will tighten up in the next few weeks, but (unsurprisingly) the Blue Devils have come out hot and look to be the corps to beat. I think it's safe to pencil them in for a 27th consecutive medal.

    98.317 Blue Devils
    96.434 Carolina Crown
    96.243 Santa Clara Vanguard
    95.988 Bluecoats
    94.339 Boston Crusaders
    91.561 Cavaliers
    89.443 Cadets
    89.167 Mandarins
    88.466 Blue Stars
    88.052 Phantom Regiment
    85.801 Blue Knights
    82.586 Crossmen
    81.684 Colts
    81.371 Academy
    80.833 Madison Scouts
    77.863 Music City
    76.465 Pacific Crest
    74.540 Spartans
    73.534 Gold
    72.631 Jersey Surf
    61.536 Golden Empire
    60.563 River City Rhythm
    59.951 Colt Cadets
    59.405 7th Regiment

I was in Drum Corp. one year, 1979, Golden Knights, Southgate, KY

Question:  I've seen trombones, violins, and other non- traditional instruments on the field.

Per rule, are these things permitted only as a supplemental item, or could you, for instance, form a permanent trombone section in a drum corp.

    Thanks,

    Steve Tolson

Yes a group can have a trombone section. All brass instruments are permitted.

I'll be the old fart in the room and complain about DCI's and the activities direction. I remember in a land far, far away, when band members had aspiration of making it to the big leagues (DCI).  Just being a part of any corp. was an honor and an earned privilege.  Many bands would try to replicate our shows but nowadays it seems DCI has gone in the other direction and is now replicating what we see in the better high school bands. Seems to me like there are so many gimmicky items being used, bass guitars ect. That its really a turn off to me.

Every now and then a corp will do something that is innovative and not gimmicky. The first that comes to mind are the 2016 Bluecoats and the use of the slides.

    Just my grumpy old opinion.

If a bass guitar is a gimmick so is a  contra/marching tuba.

Marching Drill and playing needs to start being rewarded again. I feel like it's not appreciated anymore. And I love seeing drill. I tend to watch older shows with good marching and playing, and I get excited all over again like it's my first time viewing it.

The sheets reward variety of skills. Marching drill over and over is one skill.

So for those that saw them in ST, they had ongoing issues with the sound amplification tonight right?

    Any official word what happened?

From my perspective, the sound mixer seemingly froze wouldn't start and when it did start did not load it's presets correctly? Meaning the sound guys had to turn mics on and off live and not via it's presets. And not at the correct volume levels.

Can someone get confirmation on that?

They had to do a factory reset of the board on the field….

I'm not quite sure what I just watched. My brain is melting through my nose and dripping down my shirt. The cat is crying in the tree out back. Is he calling to me or warning me of some oncoming existential danger? I reach over to shut the window and time slows...  it slows....  it slows...  it....   The only thing I can do is stare at my shirt with the rorschach brain-stains showing me the patterns of the universe. I drift beyond time, beyond these walls, beyond my own thoughts, and decide the next chance I get I'm going to get a pair of sunglasses and a convertible and take my cat for a ride.

    Excellent. That’s the point. 😉
