  1. I'm biased as well with a son on the snare line.....however, I'm feeling very good about their chances. They are definitely fighting it out with Troop and Academy, so they have their work cut out for them. The fact that Colts has steadily increased in scoring makes me think that what they are doing is working. Keep it up Colts!!!

Agreed! Beats, are you headed to Indy? We will be sitting in the Colts section all three nights!

  2. Having seen both of these corps several times...I think in terms of visual dirt that weighs on the side of Colts....that said I think they have the most room to grow going into finals week...love troop but I think they may be peaking...I will see both of them this Saturday...perhaps my opinion will change after that...

As I've said in other posts, I'm a little biased with having a son in the Colts but I agree that they have the most room to grow yet. That is not a knock against any other corps but if (and only if) they maximize their potential in the next week, they could make a run at the top 12.

  3. Maybe so, but Troop has been outscoring Colts in music captions by a decent margin for a while. It's the visual captions where Colts have had the edge

Agreed! Music has been the issue for Colts all year! Color guard and visual has been very strong compared to the others scoring around them.

  4. Well, Colts caught Troopers on July 3, too - then dropped behind for the subsequent 3 weeks. If this season teaches us anything, it's that past performance is not an indicator of future results. Gonna be a wild finish.

They were at two different shows on July 3rd. Last night was the first night when they were together that they actually beat Troopers head to head. But, I do agree it's going to be a wild finish!

  5. Indeed. Comes down to who's got the ability to maximize the ingredients they have to work with. My take:

Crossmen: Clean and smooth, leading the group in execution, with a drowsy show lacking a knockout punch. Can they coast into finals cleaning an already clean show? With 11 days until prelims, do Xmen have something up their sleeves? Is fiddling with the closer, or some other new ingredient, too risky? Is simply adding fff enough? Or has this show topped out?

Colts: Finishing strong, as usual. The crime story seems as muddled as ever -- a guy, a doll, a gun and that's about as much as I can make out -- though the corps projects plenty of '40s atmospherics, and perhaps that's enough for a show with more energy and memorable moments than Crossmen. Feels like there's room remaining to take this performance higher.

Troopers: Improved visually, especially since San Antonio, but still playing catch-up. Strongest front-to-back programming logic, with impact points aplenty and the most ambitious music book of the group. Troop has the most room for visual cleaning and individual marching improvement, and it will be needed in order to unlock other captions. Can better execution help this show grow through semis?

In a season when almost anything can happen -- and has -- on any given night, the boundary between Friday and Saturday may be determined by the smallest of influences: performance order, stray radio frequencies, the judging panel, or the presence of a single hole.

Granted, I'm just a little bit biased but I really think that out of this group, the Colts have been the only one that has just steadily increased over the last few weeks. If you look back at scoring, there has not been an up one night, down the next like the others. They are just point by point, increasing each night which is a great sign (at least for those of us hoping the Colts can pull this out). The staff appears to be listening to the judges, taking in what they are being told, and making changes everyday and it has not hurt them by not seeming prepared for each night's performance. Their staff really seems to pull it out of these kids near the end just coming up a little short last year. I'm hoping that since they caught Troopers earlier than last year, that it will help to guide them towards that elusive top 12 spot. Who knows, maybe we can have a 3-way tie for 12th! :)

  6. The first of many post-Atlanta contests where Troopers and Colts will see each other. These two corps will pretty much hammer on each other nightly between ATL and Indy.

In the process, one of them might find themselves in position to nab a finals spot.

Plus they are with Crossmen which is who they have to catch right now so we will see if they can make up some ground heading into Indy week.

  7. Scouts: overall a good show. LOVE traffic jam part. I see what previous folks have mentioned with cheese factor of "gotta dance" and "moses supposes". A lot of dirt tonight..we'll see if it shows in final scores. Blue Stars up next.

Love the Scouts but I agree with everything you've said about them. I keep waiting for them to be cleaner and it's not happening. Hasn't affected their scores YET!

  8. BK was very good. They had several holes and a few rough spots in the visual performance tonight

They sounded great and put out some terrific energy the back 2 thirds of the show. I do think they'd benefit dramatically from creating a little more tension (musically - probably from the pit) in the first third of the show

Also noticed a lot of spacers and earrings on the members which is pretty distracting when they did the close up shots. I'm sure from the stands that makes zero difference

Anyway- really nicely done Blue Knights!! Should show very well in Indy :)

I noticed many holes as well. Hopefully those aren't from injuries that will keep kids out for a long period of time.

  9. find the last time the top 12 was the same 2nd years in a row. Not as common as you believe.

    2014 crossmen

    2013 blue stars

    2012 Crossmen

    2011 Spirit (I believe)

    2010 Madison scouts

    2009 troopers

    2008 Madison scouts

Well then you've just made my point! If Colts, Troopers, or Academy get in, then we've got a very strong activity! In my OPINION, the Colts have the strongest of those 3.

  10. watch out your bias is showing. If SA told us anything is that the Minneapolis show was underscored. All the groups colts "were" ahead of passed them. 3 points behind that group in front of them. Their visual is carrying the corps.

What's wrong with showing bias? I've been a marching member of a top 12 corps and have spent 30 years of my life watching the activity and I like what I see from them.

  11. COLTS are Not cleaner than Academy or Troopers and not as good of design . Academy show is very good and Troopers are very clean . Colts are better than they were . But others have progressed more .

It's my review of what I saw . Sorry if you disagree .

    On to intermission .

We will never agree that they aren't cleaner and if you watch the drills between those 3 corps, the Colts is much more demanding and fast paced.

  12. Pushing but won't make it unless another corps has a major slip up between now and semis

You never know what kind of changes will take place in the last couple of weeks that will make a difference. I just think it's good for the activity to not have the same top 12 year after year and the Colts show is gaining steam and is cleaner than anyone around them right now.
