  1. Phantom - WOW! They blew me away! Brass was miles better than the 2 groups in front. Guard was VERY effective and impressive. Percussion is the weakest point, but it's nothing to be ashamed of. Very emotional show with a lot of great visual moments! Much cleaner than 2 groups before.

This is so good to hear! About the guard especially.

  2. I HATE that building. Every time I've driven into Nashville I've cringed when I saw it. If I had to work in Nashville, I would want to work in that building because it would be the only place downtown where I wouldn't be able to see the building.

And it's even uglier in person. Such a nice city--that thing...yeesh.

Back OT, not in a dome (that's a must). Madison or Denver would be fine. If it's someplace decent I might actually go to finals again.

  3. Im trying to remember , wasnt in 91 when Scouts, Cavies, Star and Phantom all beat each other at least once ? I also remember that year there was a publication written by Michael Boo..the DCI Scoreline newsletter...different colors each week. I have them put away somewhere.....

I don't remember PR beating Star at any point. Scouts and Cavies, yes.

  4. Just to put in my two cents...these are fantastic recordings...there's really nothing like them in drum corps. The new disc is wonderful and if you aren't familiar with isomike and the work with BK or Troop it's tremendous stuff. Highly recommended! A shame that the Troop and BK shows from 2009 weren't recorded...I was actually looking forward to the isomike take more.

Having said that, crowd noise is fine, but I don't find it central to the experience of listening to a well-recorded performance. The corps itself has to come through as life-like as possible or it's mostly a non-starter for me. Indoor recordings of drum corps are usually horrid, although the principle exception where they work would be when I might be desperate to hear a show and will willingly throw down $ for a compressed MP3 of whatever gets posted. That doesn't mean I'd prefer it. It's sort of like having those 1995 recordings--I think they're awful, but they're all we have available.

Drum corps and symphonies have a lot in common as far as recordings, IMO. With a high-quality recording, I don't particularly need to hear the crowd go crazy at the end of the show, or at big hits in the performance. The music and the performance themselves are riveting and the recording allows all of the subtle nuance to be gathered and enjoyed. The only exceptions to this for me are where the crowd becomes part of the moment...where it's a phenomena, like (especially) 2008 Regiment. Though a super-clean full-dimensional recording of a show like that would have its own value in addition to a "live" recording. Another example--I prefer the "studio" recording of the 2003 Regiment show.

If DCI were to offer studio recordings using near-obsessive techniques like those employed by isomike, I'd certainly buy them. Have isomike record whoever's passing through the area each summer? That'd be something!

  5. If it's a randomized survey only of people who bought tickets directly from DCI, then there's a methodological problem with that, because many tickets were sold at the venue by venue staff. That's where I purchased my finals tickets. And apparently, what we think doesn't matter, otherwise at least a randomized sampling of those people would be included somehow...even if it's a brief, separate survey.

Not everyone who goes to this wants to make an investment in super 5 or whatever they call that package now. So I guess this survey is for "real fans."

  6. As I remember it, the Cavaliers knocked it clean out of the park Finals night. There was only one kind of performance that even had a chance to get in front of Cadets, and it was the one they gave us. Caught 'em fair and square. Cadets show was stronger @ semis, as has been said elsewhere.

The Cadets get a lot of credit for that year, but the Cavaliers were no less impressive with their show, IMO.
