We had over 500 this year. I think we had about 14 contras. Of course we were doing ripples.
Tuba Christmas Disneyland 2009
Only in SoCal can you get a sunburn at Tuba Christmas.

If you search for the video for Tuba Christmas Disneyland 2008 you can see the contra line we had last year. I hope we can get that many again.

I rolled my ankle twice in the same show in Sunnyvale, CA in 2003 and it hasn't been the same since. Kept me from marching in '08 and '09. I'm gonna have to work on my pit chops I guess.

WOW! Our 2009 corps has their final performance this week and in just 20 days, we start the 2010 season.
Didn't someone say there was an "off season" for drum corps? Guess not.
2 weeks is plenty of time off.

Cant we tweak the volume on a company front and give it a little more artificial OOMPH, even if it isnt REAL? Who would know?
I heard exactly that a couple weeks ago in Stanford. Sometimes it seems like they just gave the brass book to the synth player. No way one person's left hand should overbalance 16 contras.

Is anyone interested in marching in an actual bugle corps in SoCal? (DCA marching bands don't count)
Since Dream marches all G bugles I'm not sure what group you're referring to.
Personally, I'm happy to see more Drum and Bugle Corps of all shapes and sizes in SoCal. Good luck to all.

I can't wait to perform the ENTIRE show for the first time.

I graduated high school in 1998...And I'm considered one of the "old guys" in Chops.
I graduated in 1990 and in Dream they call me a kid!!
I guess that's what happens when you have two 50 year-olds in the contra section.

BD has 25 years of history on it's side, since they won Semis....but then again, they had never losing in a year ending with a 6 until 06!
Along the same lines, years ending in 8 have not been kind to BD. That's a trend that could disappear as well.
-
This isn't meant to be offensive, but unless SoCal has significantly increased the demand of their show from years past, I'm not sure if they have the package to beat these guys.
Actually, our show does have more demand than previous years, especially in the visual department...and the members LOVE IT!!
I wonder if anyone has actually seen both Dream and Alliance. I know a member of Dream did get to see Alliance a couple weeks ago.
Oh, and our closer will turn some heads.

There's currently one on Ebay.

Best of luck to you, Thom.

"So, we're doing a Don Ellis Portrait."
"Great, the guard can use huge paint brushes!!"
BD '93
Great show though.

BD by far. I like SCV, but I enjoy the BD style much more. There have been BD shows I didn't like (2000, 2005), but their performance was very good.

Sheesh, this all looks so very familiar. I got mine from the Madison Scouts back in 2004. And it's about time I did this again with mine; hasn't been apart like this for awhile now. One thing I'm looking into having done to this horn is to have an additional spit valve (who invented the term "water key" anyways - it's always been a "spit valve"??!!) cut into the crook just after the valve pack, as I'm constantly spinning the horn to get the "you know what" out of the horn. Seems I'm "gurgling" half way thru every show, there's that much of it in the horn & no way to get it out without spinning it, & that hasn't been written into the drill yet!!
I added a monet style spit valve to mine in that exact place. I use it constantly. I like the compact style of the monet spit valves, but if I don't use my horn for a couple weeks it gets stuck. I guess it's a sign I need to practice more.

Yeah, trying to predict Class A in April is tough. May as well play darts with a blindfold.
The only thing I can predict is that we'll all be working hard to produce high quality, entertaining shows.

'88 Sky Ryders!!!

Woah...waitaminnit.....THREE valve mellos??? Did you finally talk Tony into playing one???
That's a work in progress...and the progress is slow.

SoCal Dream is on G
Unfortunately.

You must not have been a tuba player then... Just thinking about holding a G contrabass bugle at carry...... now THAT makes me want to cry...
It's not that bad. Just like anything else, you get used to it.
Personally, I think the switch to Bb was logical and a good move.
I also believe a G Bugle in the right hands is a lethal weapon.

I thought of an idea similar to that a few years ago. A "contra closet" with wheels and doors. But I was thinking it would be too heavy to be practical.

In 2007 I was a Senior Technical Analyst for Verizon Wireless. However, as of Jan 1, I am a Systems Consultant - Networking Services for Verizon. Basically I provide network support for Verizon Wireless, including retail stores and kiosks and "The Network" made famous by the commercials. I'm still waiting to put on my hard hat for the commercials.
