Congrats to Blue Devils 2023 on a well-deserved victory!  2024 might give us a first 4-peat.

To the other great corps out there, don’t even think about beating BD until you fully grasp a few facts about how this activity is scored:

    1) GE is not synonymous with difficulty and demand.

    2) Diffficulty/demand does not equal GE.

    3) A “great design” is not merely cramming in a bunch of demand.

    4) GE is not cleanliness.

    5) GE is not gimmickry.

    6) GE does not equal audience or crowd reaction.

    7) Since GE scores are not divided by two (like Visual and Music scores), GE numbers contribute twice as much to overall score than any of the performance sub-captions (brass, percussion, color guard).

    8. It is easier (much) to correct performance problems in July/August than to overcome a GE deficit.

    9) Visual Analysis and Music Analysis may not be GE, but they are tied to how the visual and music designs coordinate and contribute to GE.

    10) Today begins the off season for performers

    11) Today through April is the on season for designers

12 If you are a designer and are the least bit foggy about what constitutes GE, read the #### sheets. Every single word… over and over and over.

    13) Reading and understanding the sheets is not the same as doing what is on the sheets.

    14) Whether you agree with (or like) what is on the sheets is immaterial to the fact that the MMs you serve will be judged by what is on the sheets.

    15) Malicious compliance, doing the bare minimum and/or checking the box for a GE sheet item is not the same as maximizing that item.

    16) Generating GE is good. Generating GE in innovative ways is good. Generating GE in a variety of ways is better. Generating GE in a variety of innovative ways that also carry artistic risk is way better. Do so better than anyone else in a way that requires the most proficient MMs is the path to winning.

    17) If you don’t like the sheets, work to change them and quit grousing about them.

    Anything missing?

Currently at the moment you need probably 19.9s minimum from all judges to match, potentially exceed BD in GE, and the corps right beneath them weren’t some massive gap off away from them on the score sheets themselves when it comes to what they put out there, so even throwing point 15 out there sounds odd to me.
Some folks are arguing every corps has gimmicks, and to a degree they’re not wrong, even BD.

lots of semantics with the discussion as to what words define what GE truly is when it is discussed, even when referencing the word-for-word writing as rigid of the caption when there is room for interpretation obviously. Using words such as demand, clarity, gimmickry, cleanliness, variety, etc. mean different things to different people a lot of the time. As far as I’m concerned, 20’s on the sheets for GE that a corps earns could be earned in a multitude of ways by the sound of it!

Personally, I never go into a show to see who has the most “effective” show, never have I said “**** that’s some GE right there!!” for any particular moment. I just go in trying to feel something, and that’s all I wanna get from any show from any corps, that’s all for me mainly.

  2. I am usually an optimist, many folks will probably argue 2023 exceeded 2022 in terms of the overall quality of shows and corps, I feel the same will be true for 2024. For me personally, there hasn’t been a show for me that have really made an INSANE monumental impact for me since the 2010’s in the moment when watching live, although some shows definitely have great re-watchability and are fantastic earworms(bluecoats lately especially). Purely a personal take of course, I hope 2024 has that for me, I still think that corps will continue to get better next summer🫡

I was going to say, "let's hope the other judges on Saturday" have the same read on Crown, but then I saw he gave the same overall score as the other GE2, so I believe they wil be fine in that caption....plus it's the music-focused judges in GE2, which is Crown's strength.

Someone on here pointed out to "just look to see where Crown is at the top, to determine which of GE1/GE2 is the music-focused judge(s)". Turns out to be solid advice.

Oh yes I know, that’s why I said they did music GE in particular. I do think Crown will have a steady GE score this time around, especially when they were able to take one of the 4 judges away from BD, it bodes well.

Thanks. I love Crown this year. Honestly, I just don't know what to expect of the judges with regards to them. Last year, hated the show, was glad they were 4th. But as much as I'm a Vanguard fan (more than Crown) I thought they were going to beat Vanguard in 2019.

2018, SCV’s hornline sent me to another plane of existence, haven’t had that replicated since live with any corps so I am indebted to them🙏🫡

while this corps isn’t as powerful as I imagine 2012-14 Crown was, never saw them live, I did appreciate all the little snippets and bits that you heard that remind you of ‘12-‘13 and ‘15-‘16 when I heard them live. Couldn’t say that about last year AT ALL…that’s the difference this year with Crown, plus I think the show subject is catered for them, the uniforms are quite cool, etc. etc. haha

  5. Crownies must be very happy of the result tonight, GE music judge that gave them first happens to be one of my past HS band directors, every time I see his name on the sheets, usually music analysis, music GE, i know he will have a pretty favorable opinion for Crown🫡

    1.     Blue Devils (handedly) 97.688  I guessed they would win relatively big.  I found myself head nodding on many of their tunes, what a groove they have.  They sounded great on the big speakers tonight.

    2.     Bluecoats 96.688 * (3rdI was not an early fan of that off-beat show but I am now as this show has really grown on me.  I had them in 2nd tonight.

    3.     Boston Crusaders 96.3 * (4th) I thought I heard some sections where the horns and drums did not sync well which I thought put them in 4th.  The snares sounded crisp!

    4.     Carolina Crown 96.975 * (2ndLush horn line and I think I am beginning to follow what the prancing guys are doing.  BTW, I thought King Arthur got stabbed, but he seemed to be OK by the Crown set.  Can somebody tell me the story?

    5.     Cadets 93.688  I love the opening hit and ballad.  Their opening circle drill had two lines which merged while circling finally had some coherence so you could see what they were trying to do.  That had to help them with GE.  Drums and horns are my favorite of 5-7-7 with the ballad being my favorite.

    6.     Mandarins 93.363  Fantastic show, I thought they might have won the night.

    7.     Phantom Regiment 92.675  Splitting hair of course but I thought what they lacked was big moments.  Lots of great chords, almost a little too much and I never thought I'd say that about a drum corps show.

    8.     Cavaliers 91.788  This is another show that has really grown on me.  The secret that everybody knows is the percussion is king of the hill.  I don't know if anybody predicted that coming into the season.

For crown: have you not watched Shrek 3??? He should’ve gone for the head🙃🙃

Honestly I’ll take 5th with Brooks if I’m Crown. He had them 7th back in Texas. Finals will be the real interesting one as Davila has scored Crown high recently so we’ll see. Sanford is 1/3 of the way to Rosemont, IL though…

It’s going 3/3 in my estimation, and they’re off to a great start with pulling ahead average wise as a corps that could beat them one night probably had too low of a prelims score to match their average if they get topped.
    The caption is theirs👀🎉🎉

Percussion continues to be a grab bag after Cavies in first. Crown now back to 5th when they had a string of high placements the last few shows.

If I were to have predicted Percussion tonight, which I did as the show was going on, I had Crown in 5th. Not that I know anything about percussion, just where I thought scores would go!

Very pleased to see them 2nd overall in night 1 of course haha

Phantom's is the only show that remotely calls for it. But it's a trend I simply can't enjoy overall. Too beauty pageant Dolly Dinkle in the vibes in general.

    To each their own!🫡🫡

I know there’s various corps that employ the *shimmering* visual eye catcher to their uniforms, notably Boston this year with their front of their uniforms simulating the ocean blue, which I thought was cool to see in Denton earlier this year, BD has done it various years, I personally don’t find myself ever disliking it!

Excellent power Phantom from all sections.

Just want to say that it will always feel strange to me for designers to put that much sparkle and sequins on grown adults. Phantom, I'll allow it this year but I'ma need you to pull back on that in the future. 🙃

Shows nowadays, not speaking aesthetically, but you know it where you hear it, could use more of that sparkle
Phantom is known for being a “romantic” corps in their aura, the music they play etc.
rose-colored glasses galore, I think it suits them!
Also great job Phantom! Loved it in the theater, and at Denton earlier in the year, achieving more and more each performance!

    Feels strange to say...

SoA's show is more cohesive and goes somewhere...

While PC and Bones' shows just seem more mature.

I can't seem to explain it any other way, but I can see why SoA may not get past today, sadly.

Great runs for all three. So happy I tuned in today.

My thoughts of all three, SOA is more carefree and brisk, but also quite emotional

Crossmen’s is more ambitious musically and visually in regards to corps movement/drill

PC’s is the most mature, theatrical imo

I did Prelims in the theater out here in SoCal few years back before Covid.

I swear every high school band kid in Southern California was in that theater.

With all the yelling, screaming, loud talking, and teenagers being teenagers, I almost had a Iraqi Flashback.

Thank God my wife was there constantly reminding me that they were only 15-16 years old. Lol.

But on the flipside by the time me and the wifey left the theater, we were all caught up on the latest fashion, slang, and gossip across the high school campuses.

Here in Texas, in a crowd that had a decent number of high schoolers, they had bought group tickets I imagine, they weren’t bad at all. Cheering for their own if they knew someone in the corps, that did happen, but the crowd was pretty subdued! I’ve had mostly decent experiences watching at the theater, 2019 being especially great ‘cause they finally turned the knob up on the audio system and you could definitely feel the weight of corps’ performances! That’s something I’m definitely gonna look out for this year and make sure, someway somehow that is replicated!

🤷🏽‍♂️ I will always maintain full trust in the judges and their decisions, whether it benefits BD or not, but I definitely am curious about a couple captions

Good mindset to have. And yeah, I was quite surprised BD ended up slipping in percussion, it could all change later this week. Bloo taking percussion last year was not on many people’s bingo card, BD has been able to snag the top score in captions on finals night other corps won overall quite often. Even if I’m not a BD fan, these possibilities are always there. On the flip side, I like the tightness that we’re seeing not just with *X* corps and BD, but among the top 4 as a whole. Caption swaps are gonna be happening THROUGHOUT the weekend, and I think that’s pretty exciting to see. Maybe the most solidified caption out of any might be Cavies percussion at this point!! Quite the crazy season it’s been👀

We won’t know if the four are within 0.5 of each other until Thursday. Were BD and Bloo performing last night they could have scored over 96, or under 95. We just don’t know. Different nights, different shows.

Considering there was the need to place the 5-7 tier, since none of them performed yesterday, I believe the two shows definitely were two different things. BD and Bloo performed and the next closest corps to them is, Cavaliers? I think? Hard to say you can compare them both as one.

it is great to see what close battles are going on between all these corps though, a deserving medalist at this point won’t be medaling, the margin between 5-7 is almost nothing, crazy to see!

Mandarins have been left out of the big shows like Broken Arrow/Murfreesboro because of their 10th place finish last year. But as long as they keep pace with what they are doing now, we will see them in those shows and a couple others next year.

They did perform twice this week in McKinney and Monroe, just out of sight out of mind since those shows were not broadcasted on Flo.

Didn’t even think about that, but yes, they will be at all the premier shows next year more than likely👀👀

for BD it didn’t necessarily equate to more shows during Broken Arrow/Texas Tour week. All they did was the Houston show and SA. I know this because they have skipped the DFW area for the past two years now🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯
