  1. I auditioned for Cadets color guard 1997 and was offered a spot but I chickened out and I didn't take it. I had never marched color guard before and was too scared. Several of my best friends at the time marched in the guard that summer. It was a decision I have regretted ever since.

I LIVE for that color guard!

  2. I thought the Crossmen were there too last night!!! I guess you missed them :(

Unfortunately, I had to step out for a work call so I only caught the last half of their show from the voms. I loved the uniforms, and the guard was strong. Even with the hornline in front of the pit, the field looked cluttered during the ballad. I think wind was an issue for the kites.

  3. Just in from the show...a few thoughts...

A good crowd, much better than last years, and thankfully now 2 hour rain delay.

    - Has OC always been this good? I need to may more attention to corps on the bottom end of the top ~21

    - I enjoyed Colts so much more than I had before. The edits are working, keep 'em coming.

    - I just can't get into the Blue Stars' guard book. It seem so unlyrical and compulsory.

    - BK is just one big bag of skittles and I love it. Whoever is in charge of their color palette should get all the dollars.

    - Vanguard....wow. I went to rehearsal last night so I knew what was coming, but wow....seeing the lights under the lights was just awesome. It got a huge WOW from the crowd. The lights are on the coils, the sashes, and the pit instruments. I could tell by how they rehearsed that they were in this for a medal, and that's the way they played tonight. Such an amazing show and such an outstanding performance.

  4. I'm liking the new silks....not a huge change, but I think it'll boost the guard's visibility and therefor the scores. I still don't think they're being rewarded for the difficulty of their work, and now that they're in blinding neon, I hope that will change.

As far as the corps uniform, what if they adopted a look similar to the 1997 guard uniform? White pants, black jacket with lime cummerbund? I think it would look awesome. I know thats the worst pic ever but it's all I could find. The guard shakos were blue, I think?

  5. This year's guard uniform and color scheme is very reminiscent of the SideXSide show they did a few years back, very simplistic and classic cadets.

When I think of some of the really great and classic Cadets guards from the past, simple color schemes don't come to mind. 92, 93,96, 97 ( ), 98( ), 99, '00, 03 all had hugely diverse color schemes that changes wildly from song to song. 98 literally just went through the rainbow.

  6. I think my biggest qualm with the Cadets' color scheme is that there are really only 4 colors on the silks, two of which are in similar tones to the uniforms. They only use red, orange/gold, blue, and purple. When you compare that to BD (~7 colors), Bloo (~7), BK (all the colors), the pallette just seems a little plain. There are times when using silks that are close to the uniform can really work - Stonehenge in '98 comes to mind, but this year, I think it's all a little too warm.

  7. One guard not mentioned here is BK. I think the mirrors somewhat limit the guard staging, but I think they have the best color pallet in DCI this year (and last year too).

Crown is far and away the best guard of the season, though not my personal favorite (SCV). I think they're the best guard Crown's had since "A Second Chance" and that whackadoodle Adam Sage flag book.
